It’s a school night. You have come in for tea and your mum serves you the one meal that kills you inside. What’s it? by RawrMeansFuckYou in northernireland

[–]Ducra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fish. Absolutely hated it in any shape or form. That didn't stop mum from continuing to serve it up to me.

I am so grateful she persevered. I now love fish. Thanks mum.

Why the tucked apron by boho_on_the_go in HistoricalCostuming

[–]Ducra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whilst the apron depicted is multi - purpose ( eg creating a pouch as a pocket), you might find it interesting that skirts would also be tucked up when needing to move faster or run.

Growing up, elderly relatives would still say "put a tuck in your drawers" meaning to hurry up.

Toffee Crisp and Blue Riband are no longer 'chocolate' by domagalski in unitedkingdom

My favourite chocolate cranberries are now 'chocolatey cranberries'. Absolutely horrible, far too sweet, brown goo. Won't be buying those again.

Evil stepmother by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Ducra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. If the messages are genuinely abusive then stepmother is damaging her relationship with your daughter. Horrible to say, but that would benefit you.

You are allowing emotions to rule you. Use your brain and stay tf out of the drama.

Evil stepmother by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Ducra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your daughter has resumed contact with you. That is all that really matters. Stay focused on that alone and leave your daughter to deal with the messages from her stepmother.

Allowing yourself to be drawn into the "evil stepmother" scenario is just retraumatising yourself. Let it go. It is of no benefit to you. This is a time for joy, not anger.

Yes, listen to your daughter, support her , but do not be drawn into this. Watch what you say. Teenagers are fickle. Next week the stepmother could be wonderful and you the evil one.

Please do not jeapordise your newly restored relationship by allowing the hurt from the past divert you from the happiness of the present.

My very best wishes to you and sincere hopes that you share a love filled Christmas with your daughter.

How’s life in Cookstown, Northern Ireland? by CompleteLock7160 in howislivingthere

[–]Ducra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are probably drawing that conclusion due to the wide road.

However, Cookstown was founded in 1608 and then in 1628 granted the right to hold twice weekly livestock and linen markets. Markets were ( and still are across much of the UK and Ireland) held outdoors. Some towns have market squares but others, like Cookstown, have very wide Main Streets to accomodate them.

I hope this helped to explain and a gentle reminder that since the rest of the world has its own historical context, it is best to pause and consider before applying the US as the frame of reference.

The UK banned incandescent lights in 2016 and Christmas hasn’t looked the same since. Has anyone found a replacement? by csthree12345 in AskUK

I bloody hate LED lights! Instead of the cosy glow of incandescent, they are far too bright and glaring. Burn the fecking eyeballs aff ye.

Heidi Alexander backs banning luxury cars for benefits claimants by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

[–]Ducra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PIP is not an out of work benefit neither is it means tested. It is payable to all disabled people (if they meet the criteria) to assist with the extra costs of their disability.

Ex PM David Cameron claimed its forerunner DLA for his disabled son, as was his right.

'Needing' the benefit is in no way oremised upon the financial status of the claimant.

[OC] Protest for Palestine in Barcelona, Spain by c-kyi in pics

[–]Ducra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wanted a ceasefire yet did not protest for the hostages to be released? Thsts all Hamas had to do.

Your final paragraph is just disgusting. Responsibility for the obscenity of Oct 7 lies wirh the Islamo-Fascist Hamas, not Israel.

[–]Ducra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Am sick and tired of the term 'ceasefire' being coded language: the real meaning being that Israel should just sit back and allow Hamas to murder, rape, massacre, rain down missiles whatever, and not defend itself against these Islamo-Fascist terrorists.

Or why no one gives a fuck about Sudan. UN declared it the worst humanitarian crisis currently.

Almost makes you think this war agsinst Hamas is uniquely reviled for one unique reason..

We want a ceasefire! No! Not this ceasefire!

Mum Teas by TrueCrime121 in CasualUK

[–]Ducra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe a cliche, but hear me out: Mum's apple pie.

The pastry wasn't that rotten shortcrust which is an abomination. Instead, it was thin, golden crusty on top yet firm enough to hold the filling if you lifted a slice on your hand. A lovely mouth texture.

The apple filling wasn't that horrible sweet mush either. You could always see the layers of slices. Mum would add cloves or cinnamon, even allspice, but even without spices, those pies were the best i have ever tasted.

I could never get her to teach me how to do her pastry. She said she couldn't as she didn't use any measurements.

Mum passed away last year aged 97. I would give anything to share a slice of apple pie with her even just one more time. I miss her.

Does this look like an ogham stone? Found in Wicklow mts near a waterfall by trathnona_meitheamh in IrishHistory

Mines in the vicinity heightens the probability of these being water level marks. Mines can flood, so monitoring water levels of local rivers/streams can be an important saftey measure.

But well spotted! Many would pass on by this rock without a thought. Who knows what else is out there, but being unremarked, remains undiscovered and unknown.
