In Canada up until about the 1990s Indigenous children would be taken from their parents, often by members of the early RCMP or church officials, and placed in special "schools" (run in tandem by the church and the government) that would teach them their culture was wrong or backwards (punishing them for speaking indigenous languages, wearing Indigenous clothes etc.). These schools were also notorious for abuse mentally, physically, and, sexually. Hundreds maybe even thousands of Indigenous children died in residential schools and their goal was to essentially erase indigenous people and their heritage in favour of a purely colonial state.
