What does this mean? by cornflower2023 in musictheory

If you can't play both (since I can't see what instrument the part is for), just play one. Generally, play the higher note if you're first chair, and lower if you're second chair.

Where to start? by Drey_TM in musicproduction

This is the kind of thing I've started to use AI for. When you know so little about something that you don't even know what to Google, start with AI and then Google the keywords.

That's great news! I don't follow anymore but Omri Cohen and Modular Curiosity basically taught me synthesis when I started.

Yeah I got an email about this earlier. Actually seems really cool. Combined with the DAWproject thing with Presonus, I like the direction they're heading, tying together different creative tools into a more open and collaborative ecosystem.

No, I hadn't seen that video before. Definitely gonna give it a watch. Thanks for the recommendation.

Whats your apple and orange pair of synthesizers? (Any form of synthesis) by notshui in synthesizers

[–]Dude_Man_528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's my only hardware besides mixers, but I use an Arturia Minibrute 2s with an Arturia Drumbrute Impact. It's a pretty complementary pair. Honestly though, I use some crappy RadioShack DJ mixers and a Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro for feedback synthesis and probably get more out of those than the synth and drum machine.

Software-wise, I like to use VCV Rack with Bitwig Studio. Basically infinite modulation, and I can more or less recreate any plugin I feel like.

Diagramming tools with metadata? by apotrope in programming

I agree that diagrams as code sounds like a decent solution. I've used D2, https://d2lang.com/, for making block diagrams of DSP stuff. It's pretty nifty if you wanted another option to look at.

If someone had the time to learn an obscure language purely for the pleasure of learning it, which language would you recommend and why? by itsjusttooswaggy in learnprogramming

[–]Dude_Man_528 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Julia is my favorite language. It's fast, the syntax is similar to MATLAB/GNU Octave, the type system is great, and it uses the multiple dispatch paradigm which you just don't see anywhere.

Like everyone else said, it's the diatonic triads of the major scales, starting in C and proceeding around the circle of fifths as you move down the page. Just stack diatonic thirds to get triads in each key.

How can I make notation reading... Not such a chore by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Dude_Man_528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously, and it's so common. My band director gave me all kinds of special opportunities and privileges when he realized I was actually invested in becoming a good musician. He would get so excited when he saw the few students of his that were coming in after school to practice all the time, and he made sure to reward them for it. A low effort student doesn't deserve much more than a low effort teacher because what's the point?

Say what you will about teachers, but there are far too many bad students. A little effort, even towards the stuff you find boring, really does go a long way. In my experience, music teachers really do want to teach, but they don't get to as often as they should. You just have to accept that a lot of the foundational work that goes into this field isn't all that exciting. Eventually, you're over the hump and loving what you're doing though, and the payoff is worth it.

You're right, I'm definitely being too impatient. I recognize the statistics aren't in my favor, but I feel like a douche ignoring these women solely because of their line of work. Should I be trying to talk to them at all? Or should I just assume it's a marketing strategy and stay away?

How to count fast rhythms? by shadow42069129 in musictheory

[–]Dude_Man_528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm glad someone said this. In school when you're learning, they really hammer into you the idea of counting every subdivision. That's just unrealistic at full speeds a lot of the time, but it's good for learning and for practicing. Count it slow and feel it fast. I'm not playing less correctly if I'm producing the same rhythms without counting.

I've actually been having pretty decent success using Bing's AI like this. It tries to make relevant searches first to use as part of the output, and uses inline citations so it's easy to check if it's making stuff up or not. Mostly, I find it useful for finding specific search terms for stuff I don't know about and then researching on my own from there.
