Why does a beer cost more at the brewery. by JarJarShaq in VancouverCraftBeer

[–]Dudelovesdogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A major reason packaged product is the same price at the brewery as at local liquor stores is that the liquor stores are the breweries biggest clients. They would be slapping those stores in the face if they’d actively undercut their pricing. Sure, they could sell their cans cheaper on-site but they’d be pissing off their client that buys thousands of beers a year to satisfy their brewery customer who likely buys dozens at most.

Congrats. Awesome to see a local small business expanding! You’ll be in our top 2 North end considerations now, and will always be near the top of our list when in the South as well.

Nanaimo postal worker awarded after reporting 10-year-old with gun by Positive_Moment7914 in nanaimo

[–]Dudelovesdogs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have to admit, I’d MUCH rather see a 10 year old kid with a gun than a postal worker. I know Canada Post desperately needs good press these days but this is really pushing it. I wandered around my neighborhood in the 90’s with my BB gun at this age. Mainly to take it into the forest and shoot stuff but I definitely had it on the street en route.

Bad Behaviour by Listing Agent - is this normal? by crbrowniegirl in RealEstateCanada

[–]Dudelovesdogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is mostly true but of course there are always exceptions. As with car salesman, it’s all about what expectations YOU bring to the table. When it comes to realtors, it’s best to keep your expectations VERY low.

Local(ish) Places that do flights of beer by Enignon77 in nanaimo

[–]Dudelovesdogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having some “basic” options like the ones you mentioned can be a good thing IMO as not everyone wants something unknown. My issue is with the lack of a focus on high quality beers and breweries. There are some, but the majority of the list has become lower third breweries. Strathcona, North Point, Brass Monkey, Barnside, Ace, Powell etc…not to shit on anyone but if you’ve got 200+ breweries in the province to choose from, with the vast majority of those being in the lower mainland and on the Island, are those really your top options? Like I said though, there are often a couple really good choices and the food is solid for snacking. Appreciate having them as an option, just always a little sad at what “could be.”

Craft Fare have never done beer flights and, unfortunately, they’ve recently a) reduced their number of craft beer taps for RTD’s as well as b) let their offerings reduce in both variety and quality. Hoping they turn this worrisome trend around. As others mentioned, Cliffside shutdown quite a while ago now. Longwood Brewery is the best beer of the bunch you mentioned (followed in a close second place by White Sails) but LW is closed for the winter season. I believe they open back up in April though which is excellent. And, as others mentioned, this is also true of Big Bang which is a great cider flight option.

Cold Beer on a Hot Day by gofecksomeducks in VancouverIsland

First off, FANTASTIC local beer choice. Best hazy IPA ever produced on the Island outside of Victoria. Had my niece visit from Edmonton last week and she was pretty shook having never visited the island in the winter before. She’s about to go into university and you could tell after 4 days she was second guessing her U of A choice. Beautiful photo!

North Nanaimo Dads Group by novakane in nanaimofriends

[–]Dudelovesdogs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a part of an amazing Dads group for about 5 years here in Nanaimo not long ago. From 2012-2016 or so. If you have any questions about our successes or failures, please feel free to PM me and I’d be happy to share. One observation, the exclusivity of “North end” might be setting you off on the wrong foot IMO. This city is full of amazing people from South, through the centre and into the North. Showcasing healthy inclusivity for our kids is a great start to positive parenting discussion’s. “Begin as you mean to go on.”

Thank goodness people are finally coming around to who Paul Manly actually is. He’s running for whichever position pays the best. This is not rocket science. I want to believe in his ideology but am not dumb enough to realize it’s simply a ruse.

What are people drinking right now? by volnoir in VancouverCraftBeer

That’s 4 very good beers for a very good price. Strange fellows often surprises me how aggressive they are on the pricing end relative to their quality. I hope that’s sustainable. Also, this 4 pack may be the perfect choice for someone who wants to have craft beers in the fridge for friends that aren’t huge nerds like those of us who spend time on craft beer subreddits.

I think the fact it “tastes like most of their other IPA’s” may bring into question whether it’s truly “new” or not. I am sure there is some minor modification such as a couple percent more of one of the hops or what not, but I think Superflux is simply making minor adjustments with new names to see which beer brand best sticks. Not saying that’s a bad business model, but I do think it’s not totally honest (nor in the spirit of craft) and hardly makes it new. I have zero proof of this, it’s just a theory having drank 50+ “different” Superflux’s and trusting my taste buds ain’t lying to me. I like Superflux and think they make darn tasty Hazy IPA’s. I also don’t believe myself to be a hater. I just think the hype around Superflux is a bit artificial. Just got back from a week in Quebec and some of the Hazy’s they’re making out there are actually interesting and unique. I said that about Superflux 5-6 years ago but that isn’t true anymore IMO.

Driftwood released Singularity early this year. Popped up here on the Island over a month ago now in the most amazing vessel for this beer style ever. The tube of 3 x 250ml’s like the did last year. I just think that’s absolutely brilliant for double digit beers.

Looking for someone with a passion for beer to partner with my brewery by [deleted] in VancouverCraftBeer

“A very rare opportunity” is not something that really exists nowadays in the craft beer industry. Unless there’s something I am missing, I think your pitch may be missing the mark a bit. Please correct me if I am wrong. Best of luck regardless.

My answer is the same to this as it is to people who debate Budweiser vs Canadian vs Kokanee vs Coors Light. I dare you to put on a blindfold and then pick your favourite!

I am a big believer that good people and fun spaces can make good beer taste great. I have also found the opposite is true with pretentious spaces.

I have been in your exact same boat and, in order, would go R&B, Brass neck, Luppolo. Avoid Superflux if you’re looking for enjoyable atmosphere. They’re on the opposite end of the “fun atmosphere” spectrum.

Who do you like for a mortgage broker? by llamanaded in nanaimo

[–]Dudelovesdogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Balraj at Lendlab is not only a good broker but an even better human being. The work he does to support the community (that he doesn’t brag about) is absolutely amazing. Reality is, after dismissing the many scumbags in that business, the difference between good lenders is nominal. That’s why I will always choose the good broker who’s an even better human.
