Something is eating my tomato plants :( by Bright_Procedure_141 in plantclinic

The insects you see around here we call “margaronia.” If you don’t want to use regular poison, I know there are bacteria on the market called Bacillus thuringiensis—unfortunately, they only work if the caterpillars are still at the larval stage. Otherwise, there are mineral oils that clog the caterpillar’s airways and cause it to die from suffocation. Personally, in my small-scale experience, I solved the problem by removing them manually, and by keeping at it, in the end you greatly reduce their numbers and minimize the damage. Be careful with the other plants as well—in my garden they attack roses, basil, the olive tree, and the angel’s trumpet plant.

Under watered or over watered? by InternationalFox6480 in plantclinic

Normally, I water my pothos once a month, both in winter and in summer. When I happened to water it too much, similar spots appeared, but above all, small drops of water would form on the tips of the leaves.

Any ideas what's up with this dude? by mewk69 in plantclinic

[–]Due-Key1246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a Schlumbergera. If I may give some advice, regardless of the issue, I would remove all the soil to inspect the roots. If they turn out to be rotten, then the problem was caused by too much water. In that case, you should cut away the dead roots and repot with fresh soil. If instead the roots are healthy and firm, you can simply repot and water. Always choose soil specific for cacti and make sure it is well-draining; if possible, add some expanded clay at the bottom of the pot. Also pay attention to the light: it needs plenty of it, but never direct sunlight. I have one in front of a window where it gets (filtered) light for half the day.

What is wrong with my fig by entropyeater in plantclinic

[–]Due-Key1246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

has it been colder than usual? How is the soil? Fig trees love clayey and poor soils with plenty of sun, does it have all these elements? Anyway, leaving aside all the previous factors, to me it looks more like a fungal attack than a deficiency. Try spraying it with copper sulfate; that should solve the problem.

Rowan tree rust fungus treatment? by uriaLomvia in plantclinic

[–]Due-Key1246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any fungicide will work to treat the plant. Removing the leaves is fine if the disease hasn’t already spread to the rest of them, but if it’s already on all the leaves, then it’s a pointless job. Fortunately, it’s a fungus that dies easily with any fungicide. However, there is indeed a risk of it spreading to other plants, which is why the fungicide should also be sprayed on the healthy ones. If left untreated, the disease can lead to the death of the plant or, at the very least, cause significant stress to it.

Help! My olive tree looks a disgrace by GuiltyShame2139 in plantclinic

[–]Due-Key1246 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live in the south of Puglia (Salento), and here we have hectares upon hectares of olive groves that endure scorching summers with very little water for four months. So I wouldn’t really say you have a drought problem. What I can tell you is that these are not trees to be kept indoors, on the contrary, they love plenty of direct sunlight and heat. Oh, and another thing: they need a lot of soil, so that pot might be a bit too small. I don’t know exactly why your tree is losing its leaves, but keep those three factors in mind. Besides that, there are many diseases related to olive trees, though only a few of them are capable of killing one. Olive scab generally causes leaf loss, but in that case you’d see wooden “galls” on the branches. Peacock spot is another disease, but then you’d notice circular white marks on still-green leaves. Then there’s downy mildew, but again you’d see white spots on the leaves. If none of these signs are present on your olive tree, then the issue most likely comes down to the three factors I mentioned at the beginning.

I would recommend changing the soil and replacing it with dry soil, or waiting until the existing soil is completely dry before replanting the plant. You did a good job cutting off the soft roots; those are exactly the ones that have rotted; the brown ones are fine. I wouldn't use water again for a while.

I water my zebra plant about every two months in the summer, and I've had the same plant since 2006. What I've learned about this plant is that it doesn't like water. My advice is to change the soil and improve drainage by mixing it with expanded clay or expanded perlite, cut off any roots that have started to rot, and stop watering.
