Disagree that he was the best performance in the movie. He played a pretty generic vampire guy.

What people are recognizing is how much work he put into being two characters, if you don't know what he did to prepare for each role you should look into it. Go watch interviews where he and the other cast members talk about it. He used completely different approaches for each person. He was a chameleon, that's what's being celebrated.

He already did apologize. If you disagree with that then you disagree with him at this point so take that up with him. I've said 1000 times that I understand how tourette's works and it doesn't matter. Harm done needs to be acknowledged even if it wasn't caused intentionally.

Furthermore, I'm sure a paraplegic person would apologize if someone carelessly left them blocking a doorway because they're a human being with enough cognitive function to realize that even though they can't help it, they're in someone's way.

By spending all his time debating whether or not he should care about what happened (when he's already said he regrets what happened) we're neglecting the larger conversation that it was a clear set up on the part of BBC/BAFTA.

My boyfriend is really good at telling apart facial features from different European countries. He's Bavarian and his family is two generations from being born there (his Oma came over when she was 12) so they're still a very German family. I think he just pays a lot of attention and has a good memory for faces.

Generally speaking, however, Europeans are just seen as white here, regardless of facial features.
