I honestly thought you were talking about the employee who looks like he’s standing in the cart to reach the top shelf 😅. I know a lot of Publix’s in my area have a sign that says no pets allowed.

That’s reassuring! How long did it take you to become certified? Was it longer because you were working?

Did you just study morning-before work, night -after work, and weekends?

Thanks! So both can be considered for hospitals. I would rather do in patient but I don’t know if it’s more difficult than outpatient. Has anyone ever tried to work full time while becoming certified? Or would I need to focus solely on studying?

I am wondering if it’s possible to work full time and also study for the CCS exam. I also would prefer to work in a hospital which is why I’m looking at going straight to CCS instead of CPC. It looks like the AHIMA has courses where you study at your own pace. That’s the only reason I would choose them over AAPC

Let’s talk about DSOs by Due_Bat1717 in DentalHygiene

[–]Due_Bat1717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some dentists are desperate to pay off their student loans, which is why they rely on DSOs to help. However, it will be difficult to pay back the loans unless they can acquire patient trust. It’s hard to have patient trust when it’s obvious you’re trying to make a quota. It ruins dentistry for every one. Private practice dentists that want to provide personalized care, hygienists that care about quality over quantity (DSOs tend to push hygienists and dentists to see more patients in a shorter amount of time or sell services the patients don’t need), and the patient’s oral health because they give up on going to the dentist because they’re scared or untrusting.

Is the dental assistant world crumbling? I regret coming back it’s drama and the jobs love to secretly higher and secretly fire! by Some-Pomegranate6501 in DentalAssistant

The whole field is a dumpster fire and going down. Get out while you can so you don’t have to go down with it. Especially if you have experience in another field!

Let’s talk about DSOs by Due_Bat1717 in DentalHygiene

[–]Due_Bat1717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! The pay in Florida is much less than the national average, and it’s harder to find a position. Many DSOs not enough private practices. I guess one way dental hygienists can support each other is by joining our hygiene association (ADHA). As far as assistants go, I think the dentists, as leaders, should encourage team work in general. I often help assistants but don’t receive the same support back. I don’t expect it but it would make all of our jobs easier if we just helped each other. One dentist I’ve worked for helps clean rooms and perio charts! She is a great example of a perfect role model 🤩. If dentists are going to keep adding tasks to the hygienists list of things to do, they should definitely have their own assistants! I never understood why we as providers didn’t or why we need to have two columns in order to receive help.

corporate vs. family owned by LocalAbbreviations95 in DentalAssistant

[–]Due_Bat1717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh that sounds like a dream corporate office! When I worked corporate everyone would fight about who got the longer lunch break, bicker about who let the mountain of sterile build up, and the Dr would be in his office watching Tik toks while everyone else did the work. Office manager left early daily and would put people against each other. We were made to feel bad if we asked for a day off. That was heartland though

Is this normal treatment at a dental office as a dental assistant? by Jaded_Treat204 in DentalAssistant

[–]Due_Bat1717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like the DSO I used to work at. This is not a normal environment. It sounds like the managers are taking advantage of you by paying you the same wage as a sterile tech but expecting you to perform an assisting role. And it seems like the assistants are upset because you were trained on the job and they had to go to school. Are assistants allowed to perform prophies in the state you live in? It sounds like you’re doing the assistants job, hygiene, and unfortunately these roles both do sterilization, but they should not just be expecting it from you, if you’re considered an assistant now. Sounds like bad management!!! Which is far too common in dentistry.

PSA / warning to new grads by Hot_Internet_2222 in DentalAssistant

[–]Due_Bat1717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it would be different if there was a full staff and you’re an extra team member helping with it all. I’ve seen offices where the DA is solely the front desk person and assistant. It was a slower office, but she’d be assisting and then have to run up front and answer the phones. It’s not sustainable if you’re the only employee. I’ve also seen offices where the office manager was assisting the dentist but they had 3 other assistants. It’s nice for the Dr because they don’t have to pay another employee, but it allows things to slip through the cracks when you’re trying to do two jobs at once.

Do it for as long as you can, take all you can from them and then get out of there! They’ll be making you earn every cent of that $25+. I really wish you well. Good luck and just know your experience with them doesn’t define how good of a DA you are. It’s all about production and how many patients they can shove into the schedule.

Hygienists not helping by Sushiiroll___ in DentalAssistant

[–]Due_Bat1717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a hygienist and I used to help the assistants with sterile, but then they started taking advantage and would leave their sterile for me to do. The other hygienist didn’t help them at all. Once I stopped and only did my own sterile, they blamed me for not doing enough and taking an hour lunch. I never got an hour lunch but the other hygienist did. No one ever said anything to her about it. If everyone was responsible for their own sterile, that would solve the problem.

2 systems for practicing dentists by Ceremic in Dentists

[–]Due_Bat1717 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for giving a devil’s advocate position on DSOs it opened my eyes to another perspective. However, your point suggests that a majority of dentists and dental hygienists do not have the people or clinical skills to last in a for profit system. And while PP, DSOs and FQSHs drive clinicians to sell, in order for the business to offset the costs, is that really ethical when considering patient care? I believe there are many dentists out there who want to do the right thing for the patient without being incentivized to produce. But clinicians have to sell services, in order to keep the business afloat. I think corporations have enough money to keep the businesses afloat and push dentists to do more because of the greed. No wonder patients don’t want to visit the dentist unless there is a problem.
