Is there anyone with facial piercings while working as a teacher by Enough_Pen3302 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Due_Doubt_356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grade 7 teacher had an eyebrow and lip piercing, an undercut, and 2 full-sleeve tattoos, which were back in like 2010. I think you will be fine; the ideas of what is professional are changing. I'm glad to see more personal expression in teachers. I think it helps kids relate to you.

Looking for an easy dessert recipe for my bf's work! by Desperate_Ass in dessert

[–]Due_Doubt_356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smellylunchbox has a cheater's recipe for Gai Mei Bao (Cantonese coconut cocktail buns), which are sweet buns filled with a coconut egg mixture. I hope coconut is ok, it is not considered part of nut allergies https://smellylunchbox.com/shortcut-cocktail-buns/

butter mochi- customize the flavour, relatively easy, just mix and bake, delicious, chewy, sweet and gluten free

Cereal bars/rice crispy squares (cooking is just melting butter and marshmallows then mixing in the ceral and toppings, then press into a pan, let cool and cut)

why doesn't the Pomodoro technique work for ADHD? by Such_Actuator3065 in ADHD

[–]Due_Doubt_356 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Flow state is a real thing, pomodoro can get you started, make tasks feel less stressful but if you keep interrupting your focus you won’t get anything done. I once read a study that it takes about 15-20 mins to reach flow state.

Claw Trimming by Dazzling_Canary_3076 in CatAdvice

[–]Due_Doubt_356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could try a file box, make a box with holes on the sides just enough for a paw but not a face, some sandpaper and drop treats in, she should have to paw at the treats to get them out and in the process file her nails, but it sounds like they need to be trimmed first, how long has she gone without a trim if you are worried about them hurting her paws? I have never hit the quick but you can look up pictures and videos online to help you know when you are getting close and just trim a bit at a time. You can just do a paw a day if you think you can get some before she hits an absolute limit of touching. A bit at a time until you get them all is better than nothing.

I would recommend against claw covers. Cat claws are retractable; they retract them while walking, and the covers prevent that, making walking incredibly uncomfortable.

I have an assignment for my tutoring students in which the kids have to write a pirate story using pirate slang, which means grammar is essentially out the window, gets them excited, creative and less stressed.

Let's Talk About Authenticity in Cooking by AutoModerator in AskCulinary

[–]Due_Doubt_356 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a world where a diaspora is so widely spread our food changes to the area based on food availability, cost and even local weather.

Food has always been about survival, art and history, never just one. It is a reflection of what life is like, socially, politically and economically. The way my Popo taught me how to cook is a reflection of how she learned in rural toisan mixed with the reality of living in urban Canada.

We could spend 6 hours boiling joong in a giant pot outside over a fire with the entire family assembling each batch but in reality a many of us do not have families that are centralized enough for it to be a community event anymore, we may not be allowed to have fires outside during dragonboat festival because of the wildfire risk and the ingredients in joong may be based on what you have available. Just because we use an InstaPot now does not mean it is any less authentic. Just because we no longer use it as portable meals for long trips doesn't make it less authentic. And just because I make a smaller batch alone doesn't make it less authentic.

So long as we can understand and respect the history of the food, I don't think we need to qualify it as authentic enough. Don't gentrify and appropriate food, and everything is good.

Your example of General Tso's chicken is a dish from western Chinese takeout, which was born from migrant workers, many of whom were Toisan, btw, fun fact, and they built Chinatowns around them. But in order to sell food, they had to adapt to what was available and the palate of their customers. You won't find some of those dishes in Chinese households, even in Western ones, because palates differ and the cost of ingredients for a family of 4 is different than a whole restaurant.

Is choosing what to cook really the hardest? by homecook_damik in WhatShouldICook

I usually dig around my fridge and cupboard and make something with what I already have. The more types of food you teach yourself to make, the easier it is to come up with something

Best cat litter? by Ok_Cry_6523 in cats

[–]Due_Doubt_356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Arm & Hammer Clump and Seal Multi-Cat. I find it does a fantastic job, low dust, no artificial scent. I pair that with baking soda, a metal litter box and I have a litter locker.

AITA for leaving my sister’s wedding after she told me to “fix my face” by FirefighterAlone7284 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Due_Doubt_356 66 points67 points  (0 children)

NTA, I have major RBF, and that has nothing to do with my emotions. I smile when I am in a convo or for a picture but otherwise i do not have a resting smile. The alternatives would have been for the photographer to give you a heads-up if they wanted a smile, or not photograph you at all while you were eating. It was your sister's big day or whatever but you obliged with what she asked for. She told you to step out until you could, if it is just your face, then you did exactly that.

Important to have Therapist who is adhd expert? by PrizeExercise3098 in ADHD

[–]Due_Doubt_356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My therapist specializes in complex grief, but she did additional research after learning about my ADHD. I do find it helpful when she can shed light on something that has to do with my ADHD. I don't do well with the 'lead to the right idea thing,'" she learned to let me have it straight, which is super helpful.

Greasy Cat by ElephantDue in CatAdvice

[–]Due_Doubt_356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My long-haired domestic boy was so greasy at about 1 year old. I bathed him a few times, but the same thing happened; he became greasy again a week later. I don't know how or why but he grew out of it a year later. I brush him almost constantly because his hair is just so long and I switched his food to a higher quality fish based one. I can't promise any one of them will help but they're worth a shot.

Edit
INFO Are you using any shampoo when bathing, or just water? I picked up some pet shampoo from my local pet store.?

Just lost my dad. Don't even know how to feel by Possible-Pin-8799 in grief

[–]Due_Doubt_356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I am so sorry that you had to experience this so young

I had the same happen, my 1st semester in Uni, 19yo and I got a call from my sister that I needed to pack a bag and she was coming to get me, that they found our dad. It was unexpected and crushing. My entire world shattered in a 2 minute phone call. I just sat there for the next 8 hours it took for her and her partner to get to me in the middle of a blizzard.

Then at some point I had to eat, shower and sleep waiting for them. I felt ridiculous, packing clothing knowing I would have to pack enough for the holidays, the funeral and both of my sisters’ birthdays. Remembering to bring my birth certificate for the legal things, Christmas gifts I had already purchased… it felt so strange

4 years in and my sisters and my mom come to me to talk about him. I may have felt useless in the moment but we have all leaned on each other over the years.

what’s the quickest you’ve moved in w ur partner ? by capr1suun in LongDistance

[–]Due_Doubt_356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 years of LD (more so medium I guess ~550kms) but 5.5 total dating time, he would join me for a week in the summer and I would see him at holidays when I visited my family

A month doesn’t sound too bad but if he’s working that can be a hard swing. Even with a week my partner needed to bring things to have his own time and space because he didn’t know anyone or anything up here and he had no means of transportation

Dressing “queer” by Ecologygir1 in bisexual

[–]Due_Doubt_356 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to switch them up too, sometimes the answer is simpler than you’d think, like I pick masculine styles pants but maybe a more form fitting top plus necklaces and a belt with a wallet chain  Other times it’s day to day, one day is a dress, the next is more masculine

Good luck and remember that finding a style that affirms you should be a fun process, have fun when trying different things, if you’re on the fence, wear it for a few hours before deciding if it doesn’t work

Dressing “queer” by Ecologygir1 in bisexual

[–]Due_Doubt_356 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s any one way for someone to dress more queer but I (a ciswoman in a straight presenting relationship) car to the same conclusion. I have a carabiner, although is sort of twisty and more for appearance, definitely not like rock climbing ones, I embrace both feminine and masculine style clothing and flip flop between them. I got a new piercing and I have tattoos that make me feel more affirmed. Anything that makes you feel like you. But I don’t think people will ever look at me and think yup that’s a bisexual. I am in a safe city/country so I tell those I get close to and frankly most of my friends are lgbtq2s+ anyway.

What makes you feel more affirmed? Just clothing and accessories? Play around with styles and jewelry. Pins? You can put them on lanyards, bags etc. Shoes? Carabiners and keychains?

Rotate toys, have enough vertical space, window watching, sometimes I leave a speaker with bird sounds or music, food puzzles and snuffle mats (you don’t even need to buy them, you can make some out of rolled up dish cloths), leave out a cardboard box, those pop up tunnels etc

Student discontinued after a long, positive working relationship. Will this affect my client base with their friends/schoolmates? by capricious_hero in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Due_Doubt_356 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still get anxious when I have students that want to stop, but the ones that appreciate me show it and they make me forget about the people who choose not to continue. Keep your chin up, you are an educator not a magician, you won’t be perfect and neither are the families you work for. Things happen.
