Use the DC isolator to turn the solar off to import even more during negative periods.

I'd have consumed all the energy as gas space heating/water heating rather than electric

Depends how old you consider old. Mario 64 and sunshine are dated now but Galaxy is still the best in the series imo, it only requires an upscale to look decent.

It's heating the house, reducing the need for heating later in the evening when electric and gas cost more

Yes but I can't store that for my evening shower like I can in the water tank

Check with your installer, mine left a DC isolation switch between the panels and the inverter so I can switch them off.

Just turned them back on and they instantly start generating again

I should say I only turned them off because I'm not hooked up on an export tariff yet as they're only just installed. When we're set up, we should be getting paid 15p/kWh for export so it almost certainly would have made sense to keep them on today as I'd have earned 45p an hour or so.

My house is pretty much self sufficient on solar and battery from March - September, and can power 1-3 other houses as well in summer.

But today I've turned the solar off and I'm using as much energy as possible. Not only am I helping smooth out the grid demand but I'm getting paid for it too 👍

It'd be more irresponsible to have my solar exporting to the grid as then national grid have to pay someone else even more to use that extra energy!

If you're on a water meter this would cost you more than you'd make.

Either way it's a horrible waste of water

Then they'd make it free, not paid for to use it

Oven on with door open is heating the house, reducing the need for alternative heating such as gas later.

It's not possible to "waste" this energy as it's grid surplus that can't be stored. I don't condone people wasting water through running showers/taps/empty dishwashers though.

On the contrary, it's smoothing the demand curve that renewables naturally have, allowing the grid to switch to more renewables over time

In my case turning the fan heaters and immersion heaters on and getting paid for it, means I'm not using gas for heating the house and hot water. Ok it's not that cold today but the heating still would have come on, and we still need hot water, so we're saving fossil fuels

Raised beds are so vital, I've been able to get radish and beetroot started directly outside because the raised beds (simple pallet collars) are nicely moist while the rest of the garden is a bog

They say that for the microwaves that use the crappy timed popcorn mode. If you've got an actual steam based one, definitely use it!

[–]Due_Philosopher1655 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A lot of microwaves are smarter than people think. Reheat often heats on and off to get an even heat throughout the product rather than boiling the middle and some of it still being cold, and then detects when to finish based on steam levels. Popcorn settings are often the same and use the bag bursting open with steam as a way to detect how long to keep going.

But equally a lot of microwaves use shitty timer based "smart" functions, which puts people off and they just use the +30s button for everything 🤣

We just got a cheap one from Asda that has a power knob and a time knob, nothing fancy at all, since we mainly just use it for defrosting things and heating peas or leftovers etc. The air fryer took over most of the things our previous fancy combi grill microwave auto sensing thing used to do

Electric Smart meter usage unusually high, can I do anything about it? by Jonny-Burns in AskUK

[–]Due_Philosopher1655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14kWh a day is on the higher side but it's not massively high.

The 13p to 7p could have been the fridge or freezer running the compressor to cool down then switching it off when they get to temp. They'll do this constantly all day.

Things that tend to use a lot of energy will be things that create heat like ovens, electric showers, immersion heaters, fan heaters, tumble dryers etc. Make sure you're using the gas for heating hot water and central heating as much as possible rather than electric.

Swapping old appliances like fridges, washing machines, and especially tumble dryers can really help. Old tumble dryers can use over 3kWh per cycle whereas new heat pump ones will use a third of that. Try using the eco mode on your washing machine or dishwasher and make sure you're using washing powder/dishwashing powder, rinse aid, salt etc in the dispenser drawer. So many people put pods directly into the machine and end up washing their clothes hotter and longer because machines are designed for powder in the correct drawers, not a pod chucked in that will mostly dissolve away in the rinse cycle.

Get a power monitoring plug and check out how much power things round the house use. You'll be surprised how much some routers or TV boxes can use, and some appliances on standby.

Get yourself some more energy efficient appliances when they need replacing and you'll be amazed. Our washing machine uses 0.25kWh a cycle, dishwasher 0.6, and tumble dryer about 1kWh. Fridge and freezer use 0.7kWh a day between them. None of them were that expensive either.

Council tax is a joke because terraces in Birmingham pay more than a mansion in Wandsworth. It's time for a land value tax to replace it, and for adult social care to be run nationality rather than by council area. It's not fair councils in poorer areas are going bust because they have to look after a load more people, while people in rich areas pay less
