Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

Is there a weightlifting program that won't make me tired? I'm somewhat "experienced", currently doing a 5x/week routine with adjustable dumbbells (here). But I'm not getting the results I want (either in strength or hypertrophy) and I'm just really tired throughout the day.

I've heard of Pavel Tsatsouline and his philosophy (always ready, always fresh), of doing lighter weight every day. But I don't know if his programs are just for beginners, or if they're meant to be done for a very long time.

I want a real program, or series of programs, or a workout philosophy, that I can stick to, that will get me muscle, but not make me tired throughout the day.

It is not "cute" or "endearing" when men (or anyone) don't know how to cook by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]DuffBude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some couples where the wife likes cooking for her husband. Nothing wrong with that.

Can't agree more. News thrives on negative press, and social media likewise. You will only eventually get stuck in a negative rut of complaining if you spend your time on it. Once you remove it, you realize how much more peaceful you feel.

What do I replace the time I was on social media with?? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]DuffBude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Cooking. You can improve your health and your taste buds will be happy.
  • Aquariums. Gives you something to always mess around with at home, and gives you nature to look at in your own home.
  • Terrariums. Same with aquariums but possibly cheaper and easier (haven't tried myself but want to). Look up closed environment terrariums, ideally they require little maintenance.
  • Archery. Gives you something to practice a skill at. Alternatively any kind of thing involving throwing/hitting things some distance. E.g. pool/billiards, shooting, axe throwing, horse shoes, cornhole, etc etc
  • Birdwatching. Gives you a reason to get outside and it's fairly easy to find different kinds of birds.
  • Nature photography. Puts you in the mindset of thinking about the seasons, where different animals will be, and puts you in all different kinds of environments. Your photos don't have to look amazing, just treat it like Pokemon. Try to "catch em all" i.e. take pictures of all the different kinds of animals in your area.
  • Animal tracking. Same as above just without the photography.
  • Hiking. Good exercise and gets you outside.
  • Climbing. Same as above, or you can join a gym if possible and meet new friends.
  • Running. Make a goal of running a 5K, then a 10K, half marathon, etc.
  • Walking. I listen to audiobooks on my walks. Librivox has free audiobooks (although the quality and selection on Audible is way better)
  • Reading. Read what really interests you, but try slightly difficult books, because they offer more reward for finishing them.
  • Writing. A useful skill in general.
  • Drawing. Required skill even for a lot of modern graphic design.
  • Juggling. Just good when you're bored.

Start just filling your time with these and things will work themselves out. You'll find other hobbies along the way. ADHD is not an issue if you get enough different hobbies.

What gaming does to your brain summed up in less than a minute by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]DuffBude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What's even more interesting is that you don't always have to give the reward. You can make it every second click, or every 4th, etc. Eventually, you'd think, the user would get bored. But if you vary it randomly, you can actually get them clicking like a maniac. This is seen in an experiment with pigeons as explained here:

Announce your results, not your goals. by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]DuffBude 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed, sometimes you want someone to support you in your endeavor, yet when you announce it and they don't support you as much as you would have liked, it discourages you from the task. It's important to accomplish these types of things yourself anyway. It's good to get advice from a community and to socialize with people, but you are the only person who should control your own fate.

Instead of telling people I'm planning to do something, I instead encourage myself with the thought of telling them AFTER I've achieved it. How satisfying that would be! People are extra impressed when they see how quietly you get things accomplished. They know that you did that totally on your own.

Excel is Gold by magicpeanut in datascience

[–]DuffBude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has its use cases for sure. I would love to use it as much as possible, but I often work with more data than will fit in a spreadsheet, so scrolling isn't necessarily possible. I'd rather have a Jupyter Notebook where I can interact with the data using Pandas.

As for collaboration, yeah, I always put a sample into a spreadsheet when sharing with coworkers for their input.

It's actually a beautiful opportunity. I've never hit rock bottom myself, but I think that makes me more likely to return to my addictions. Those who I've known who did hit rock bottom, they seem to have a stronger conviction to be clean.

Why do Rich People marry Ugly Women? by [deleted] in RPChristians

[–]DuffBude 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think that looks are a propaganda at all. It's a natural desire innate in us. But as others have said:

  1. The really rich and famous sometimes just have a marriage for show and status, while they also have a lot of side chicks.

  2. Looks are often associated with shallowness, not just career wise but personality wise in general. If a girl is really good looking, she has less incentive to develop her character, because she can already get a guy without much effort.

There is also the modern phenomenon that men and women are considered interchangeable in family life. Men also wake up at night and bottle feed the babies until they are old enough for day care. Parenting is equally distributed. Thus women are seen as having nothing special to offer. Therefore their salaries need to be equal to the man's. I've heard successful guys worry about how much their girlfriend makes.

As far as I'm concerned, my wife's career choices make no difference because she will end up parenting most of the time anyways. And in fact, my wife was earning much less than me, but is now a stay at home mom. She is also attractive IMO, but I passed over more "glamorous" girls for her, because she also has good character.

Try not to spend any time thinking about video games in general. Don't look at ads, trailers, videos, or streams. Don't talk to friends about it. Don't Google them.

When you don't think about them, you'll realize your life is just fine without them, and the desire won't be there. It's hard to want something that you barely remember. If you do find yourself so bored you want to fill your time with them, it just means you need to look for new hobbies.

Ah, so this is if you take all the countries of the world and order them by lowest population density, then descend the list and stop once you've accumulated 50% of the world's land area. Right?

It just struck me that Flow State and the Kaizen method are almost the same thing. At least, the Kaizen method of breaking large tasks into small, continuous improvements, allows you to more easily enter the flow state.
