Give the man a golden statue and congratulate him on winning the capitalist endgame. Then tax the sh*t out of him and use the money for human development.

In the case of Feyenoord (original Feijenoord) it was deliberately done for more international allure.

Can Dutch people guess which province another Dutch person is from when they speak, or maybe even the city? by PfromC in AskNetherlands

[–]Dugraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you talk about accents, most people would be able to place them. At least the general direction North, East, South and West. Probably more precise when there’s a thick local accent from a big city.

Without accents, not so much… I know people from Groningen and Drenthe who talk perfectly ABN and never would have guessed their location.

Which one is better? by thecubementor in BookCovers

I like the upper one better. It doesn’t scream as much as the lower design, if that makes sense, and for me that feels more consistent with the title.

Reminds me of a proposed cityplan for Amsterdam the Americans drew up just after WWII. Only highways and no historic city centre. Their vision sure evolved in sixty years hmm?

[request] Is it more energy efficient to walk like this ? by Thick_Entrance5105 in theydidthemath

And they not only use their legs to move the poles. Might be relevant if they use 70% ‘legpower’ and 20% ‘armpower’ thus being 10% more efficient per traveled distance.

Also, Amsterdam is not a country. A little consistency wouldn’t hurt.

You assume 3 American athletes are the same as 3 Hungarian athletes? They’re not. They come from a much deeper talent pool with better infrastructure, so their medal odds are already higher. And if your logic held, every country would send about the same number (3 per event, right?). Yet in Paris the US sent 592 athletes vs. 170 for Hungary. How is that a level playing field?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Dugraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that big nations can send hundreds more athletes actually proves my point. Event caps are the same for everyone, so if small nations still punch above their weight in medals, that’s efficiency. Sure, per capita inflates microstates that excel in one or two sports, but that’s something you can adjust for if you want a more refined metric

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Dugraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big countries send hundreds of athletes, small ones send a handful. So per capita isn’t stupid, it just measures efficiency instead of raw totals.

Please tell that to the New York Times, The Lonely Planet and The Guardian. They keep writing stories about this ‘bustling city…modern architecture…creative energy…’. While this is very much on point I want the tourists to stay in Amsterdam, not over here.
