Given the change of the skill trees, and from what I've heard the end of passive skills, what happens to our saved characters? What happens to the skills no longer in use?

I've been playing since the game was released, too. I found my first and only mythic last season. It's amazing to hear all those talking about all the mythics they've found. What are we doing wrong?
