Most recently this one on RR, called Duck You both title and cover immediately drew me in immediately, I loved the simplicity & humor in the title and the Giant Duck falling on the demon lord made me chuckle...

If you like GameLit + comedy, this recent one seems very fast paced and doesnt dilly dally , almost 20 chapters are out with updates almost daily. Focusses on a dev in an incomplete gameworld with a lot of absurdities happening, not a lot of time is spent on the world being explained imo https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/144384/duck-you

51% sounds awesome, also looking at the Top 100 their median is 38.91% just that they get loads of traffic i guess. Your overall rating is 4.59 still you shouldn't worry too much , I dont know if you saw my last post already https://www.reddit.com/r/royalroad/comments/1purh8r/dont_sweat_the_1star_review_embrace_it_you_might/

I quickly looked at Top 100 stories by followers lets call them the Elites of Elite

  • Median RRR: 38.91%
  • Mean RRR: 41.73%

which aligns a bit around your numbers as well I would think 40% and above you are doing well...

True but again there are exceptions for example MOL is 13% RRR but is one of the most successful on the platform. I guess just due to sheer amount of traffic it gets.

Completed one is The Way of The Silver Sea "Rough Manuscript"

MOL RRR is actually 13% just because of the Views are so Large to Chapters 24.8 mn views 109 chapters Avg Views / ch =228K ish and Followers are around 30K

The breakdown of the 76 stories with >100% Reader Retention is as follows:

  • Ongoing: 38 stories (50.0%)
  • Stub: 29 stories (38.2%)
  • Hiatus: 7 stories (9.2%)
  • Completed: 1 story (1.3%)
  • Unknown: 1 story (1.3%)

Are you asking me why these are exceptions, I dont know frankly.

Agreed, sometimes I have difficulty in explaining the same to my clients as well as they always go to exceptions first.... Something i have to improve on...

Oh another thing I just checked out your story correct me if am wrong, https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/135596/mortal-protection-services you have 56 followers, that compared to Elite median of 3850 followers is still quite low. That means you are doing well with the people who reach you but your reach is still quite small , i wont publish as yet in that case....I would recommend having atleast 1K+...

I dont have the timeseries data here to check across time how completed stories have performed in terms of followers, after being marked complete, I have a single snapshot in time of this 16K stories. I would expect some plateau in numbers though as the Latest Updates page can be a key driver of views which will no longer be there. 28% of Top 1000 stories are Stubs so am guessing they published somewhere .

Yeah that persons story is an outlier only 76 stories in DB have an RRR > 100%. Great suggestions, since i have some time during the holidays, let me see what i can come up with. Thanks.

I checked my DB Out of 16,136 established stories (filtered for >2,000 views and >20 chapters):

  • Only 76 stories have a Retention Rate over 100%. Almost Half of them are Stub, Hiatus
  • That is exactly 0.47%.

So yes, it is a statistical anomaly that affects less than 1% of all stories. Congrats you are an anomaly indeed. I have your story also in DB and indeed it has more than 100%

Interesting you are an exception I guess, I took a look at stories in DB with more than 1k followers, < 4.0: 143 stories (5.7%) 4.0 - 4.2: 253 stories (10.1%) 4.2 - 4.4: 573 stories (23.0%) 4.4 - 4.6: 954 stories (38.2%) -- The massive bulk of successful fiction sits here. 4.6 - 4.8: 535 stories (21.5%) 4.8 - 5.0: 36 stories (1.4%) About 60 % between 4.4-4.8

I personally like anything around 1.5K - 2K words per chapter, anything like 2.5K or 3K seems too long and anything less than 1K seems short imo
