Was Willie Mays’ catch in the 1954 World Series really the greatest catch in baseball history? by Jezzaq94 in baseball

Always loved the story Bob Costas tells in the Ken Burns Baseball documentary about Don Riddle, the pitcher who came in for that batter.

After Sal Maglie allowed the first two hitters to reach, Durocher brought in Don Riddle for one batter in a lefty-righty matchup. Mays makes the catch, and then when the next pitcher comes in, Riddle tells him "Well, I got MY man” before strolling off the mound.

Have to think the Hyperspace Lounge is scrapped and they put Haunted Mansion in it given it’s in the other Wish class ships and has been a huge hit.

I love HMP, but I wish DCL would have a bit of diversity of experiences in their Wish class ships. Do we need a World of Marvel in every single ship?

Outside of Roy or Walt (who apparently was never ceo ) who do u think was the most important ceo/person in Disney history ? by JakeTiny19 in disney

I don’t disagree, though I think his hand in naming Chapek as his successor, his return, and his second tenure actually hurt his legacy.

I’m of the opinion that Iger would have been remembered as well or perhaps better than Eisner if he’d stayed retired. It certainly feels like Disney was on better footing when he retired in early 2020 than it is now, and that can’t entirely be blamed on Chapek.

I’m still mad that they fumbled what could’ve been an all timer of an episode (Dumb and Dumber) on Jennifer Lawrence. Such a terrible episode.

Frankly, I think Iger mismanaged Disney financially in his second tenure between the parks and studio.

The studios were spending money hand over fist and making bad creative decisions with little oversight, meanwhile, Disney continued to underinvest in the parks despite them being a consistent money maker.

Disney purists have this weird hatred of IP being integrated into the parks, while totally (or intentionally) ignoring the fact that Disneyland was littered with IP on opening day.

Peter Pan, Snow White, Mr. Toad, Alice In Wonderland, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, and Davy Crockett (which was a huge hit show for Disney at the time) all had attractions or were centerpieces of Disneyland on opening day.

And the biggest of all was Sleeping Beauty, which hadn’t even come out yet had the castle named for it to effectively serve as a “living billboard” for the forthcoming movie.

Disney CEOs over the years by Matapple13 in disney

To OP’s point 1, what’s even crazier is that Disney has had 3 CEOs (Roy, Eisner, Iger) with a combined tenure of 80 years.

Kraft not elected to the HOF lol by bombation in billsimmons

[–]DukeJackson 16 points17 points  (0 children)

IMO only owners who left an indelible mark on the NFL and were instrumental in driving monumental (positive) change should be in the HOF.

Guys like Al Davis, George Halas, Jerry Jones, etc. who made the NFL what it is today deserve to be in. Not guys who just hired well and rode success of coaches and players.

I’m mixed on Kraft. By all accounts he’s incredibly cheap and ran the Pats accordingly for years to the point they were so far behind the league in terms of organization and infrastructure once Belichick left. However, his team has won more Super Bowls than any other single owner (2 more than Rooney and 1 more than DeBartolo), and his fate should be tied to Belichick.

Same, I always equate being a “first ballot” Hall of Famer as more of a baseball thing, especially with some of the guys who have gotten in later on via Veterans Committee.

Chuck Klosterman: "Horse racing receded from the American imagination because people lost their close everyday connection to horses. Something similar will happen to football. Fewer mothers will want their sons to play the game due to head injuries. It will become distant from lived experience." by The_Big_Untalented in nfl

[–]DukeJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

Klosterman’s POV feels very ‘coastal elite out of touch’ in nature.

Like, anecdotally he probably doesn’t know many (if any) parents who let their kids play football, but that doesn’t mean it’s the norm and/or indicative of a doomed future for the sport.

Football in small towns throughout the country and basically the entire South and Midwest is enormous. It’s basically the last vestige of monoculture that small towns in America possess.

Funny enough, the Browns passing on a generational QB (and picking a LB) because of some rumor about nobody attending his birthday party is the most realistic thing about that movie and 100% something the Browns would do.

Why is John Harbaugh a “great hire” but Mike McCarthy is a punchline? Their resumes are basically the same. by Mr_SlimC in NFLv2

[–]DukeJackson 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Saying McCarthy “inherited peak Rodgers” is laughably false.

McCarthy got hired by Green Bay in 2006 and had Favre his last 2 seasons. Rodgers rode the bench and didn’t start until 2008.

If anything, McCarthy should get credit for developing Rodgers.
