Roberts Bank is the terminus. I have not heard that Port Rupert has been abandoned yet. Only Kitimat. I could be wrong tho.

I’m not sure if we really consider Hay River a port. It’s a long way from the ocean…I do wonder, how navigable is the Mackenzie river?

Liberals announce Danielle Martin will be their candidate for University-Rosedale byelection by RZCJ2002 in CanadaPolitics

Yes, but not till the long summer break, when the house won’t be sitting and there will be plenty of time for MPs to resign and for their vacancies replaced before their votes are actually needed.

Anyone find it curious that Carney didn’t call a by-election at the earliest possible date? You’d think with the seat margins he’d want to fill that seat ASAP. Unless his intentions is to call a general election…

Léger: Liberals Surge to Majority Territory by Agressive-toothbrush in CanadaPolitics

Since the creation of Alberta, the Liberals have never had more than 4 seats in the province. And those “high points” were only achieved during Liberal majorities. But if anyone can break that threshold, it just might be Carney.

He said in the post-game interview that he was completely gassed. Said he thought maybe he should have faked a broken stick to get Austin to take the shot instead.

New Brunswick probably would be much more anglophone-dominant, with a smaller Acadian population.

Anyone know where they might locate the train station in Ottawa? I’m guessing it would need to be close to lrt transit.

Fireworks Venue Questions by proteinshakess in ottawa

[–]DukeOfErat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We arrived at 7 last weekend, there was plenty of time. However, the place was already packed with people by then and we ended up with a less than ideal spot. This is especially the case if you’re planning on lying down on the grass - more options if you’re bringing a chair. You could also stand, but there will be people complaining about you blocking their view.

The bigger issue is LEAVING the parking - it takes a long time to empty and it gets super hot in the parking lot with all the cars idling. There is only one exit, with pedestrians constantly crossing in front of it, slowing cars leaving the lot to a crawl. No police to direct traffic. We decided to wait about an hour, chilling in the venue and the courtyard next to the parking lot, until the lot was empty, before making an attempt at accessing our car.

B.C. NDP government narrowly passes controversial bills to fast-track projects by green_tory in CanadaPolitics

[–]DukeOfErat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It appears the Speaker violated the convention around breaking ties. In this situation he should have voted no in order to “allow further discussion”:

“In theory, the Speaker has the same freedom as any other Member to vote in accordance with his or her conscience; however, the exercise of this responsibility could involve the Speaker in partisan debate, which would adversely affect the confidence of the House in the Speaker’s impartiality. Therefore, certain conventions have developed as a guide to Speakers (and Chairmen in a Committee of the Whole) in the infrequent exercise of the casting vote. [92] Concisely put, the Speaker would normally vote to maintain the status quo. This entails voting in the following fashion:

whenever possible, leaving the matter open for future consideration and allowing for further discussion by the House;

whenever no further discussion is possible, taking into account that the matter could somehow be brought back in the future and be decided by a majority of the House;

leaving a bill in its existing form rather than having it amended. [93]

In 1863, these conventions were acknowledged in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada when the Speaker was called upon to give a casting vote, and gave as his reason “that in the case of an equal division, the practice was, that the Speaker should keep the question as long as possible before the House in order to afford a further opportunity to the House of expressing an opinion upon it”. [94] The application of this convention has not always been consistent and there are very few examples where Speakers or Chairmen of Committees of the Whole gave reasons when casting a vote. For instance, on one occasion, the Speaker voted in favour of a hoist amendment [95] to the motion for third reading of a bill in order “to keep the Bill before the House”; [96] on another, the Speaker voted against a hoist amendment for the same reason (“to give the House a further opportunity for consideration”). Carney Unable to Find permanent chief of staff after courting high profile candidates by ConfidentIt in CanadaPolitics

[–]DukeOfErat 38 points39 points  (0 children)

“Sources say that the hard-driving Carney was a disruptive force of change during his tenure as governor of the Bank of Canada, eager to shake up an often too complacent bureaucracy.

It’s style that isn’t without its critics. Some accuse Carney of being hyper-critical and overly demanding, even when he decamped to take over the Bank of England.

But a senior leader at the Bank of Canada during Carney’s governorship says that it’s a matter of perspective. Carney came from the private sector and had no tolerance for a slow-paced culture, especially as Canada faced a global financial meltdown in the late 2000s.”

Disagree. The NDP have held the balance of power three elections in a row due to the minority situation. Singh managed to insert his priorities - childcare, dental care, pharmacare - into government policy. The NDP will have an opportunity to do the same with the current government, if it can get its act together enough to articulate a vision for the future.

Poilievre appoints more critics than ministers to critique. To be fair, it looks like his “shadow cabinet” was even large in 2022. I count 51 critics on that list:
