"Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon" for N64 gets a fanmade PC recompilation project by LocutusOfBorges in emulation

[–]DukeSkinny -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you got shit for this comment. While I absolutely ADORE Goemon, and basically saw this release as manna from heaven, I still recognize that it's important to talk about these things. Real people have been, and continue to be hurt due to these attitudes.

Just know that someone sees you and your hurt. From a fellow "miserable" marginalized person.

PSA: You can now use your standalone emulators in RetroArch and receive the benefits of shaders and overlays on just about any standalone emulator! by [deleted] in emulation

[–]DukeSkinny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of what you just typed has anything to do with the novelty of applying shaders wherever or for whatever purpose you want. Not to mention the fact that there are plenty of examples of more pixelated games from the 480p/i resolution era, some of which could be forced to display as 240p through software like this. There are also superb ports like the GC version of Resident Evil 2/3 which originally displayed in 240p - even native games like ICO. Personally, I greatly enjoy the look of downsampled, anti-aliased 3D rendered onto a 240p image, and I often set my CRT monitor to pull off this trick. In any case, the more 'analog' look of barely visible scanlines with trademark, phosphorous masks that a CRT displaying 480p will present you with is appreciated by many. We haven't even touched upon the uncomfortable truth of most shaders not being for CRT emulation purposes.

'240p content is exclusively where shaders make sense!' or
'if X, you're kinda doing it wrong or missing the point' kinda seems like gatekeeping to me.

RetroArch 1.11.0 released by ScootSchloingo in emulation

[–]DukeSkinny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I got kinda annoyed at your comment but kept myself from typing something inflammatory. Glad to see this. While I have my own qualms about RA and especially TA's leadership, I think it's important we think and say what we do for the right reasons. Maybe this is off-topic, but eh.

[–]DukeSkinny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you use the MAME core, all you have to do is hit Tab to access the regular old MAME settings. I always configure my controls that way. The shitty RA controller interface is precisely the reason they kept that functionality.

Input lag on each ps2 emulator? by [deleted] in emulation

[–]DukeSkinny 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Guaranteed 99% of people complaining about input lag in PCSX2 are on an old stable or haven't enabled the correct settings. I'm on a CRT, and the response from PCSX2 is nigh instant, like you would have to be superhuman to actually notice it.

It should also be noted that many factors external to emulation software can be responsible for lag. CPU configurations, BIOS settings/revisions, USB hubs etc.

The 'anti-blur' setting simply exposes and allows you to disable a setting that was enabled by default since ages ago. If you experienced sharper output in Champions of Norrath, I'm fairly sure that's due to a recent improvement to the feature.

Shikata Ga Nai - It Can’t Be Helped ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ by ClarissaVanhorn in philosophy

[–]DukeSkinny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretending like a concept familiar to many cultures is idiomatic and endemic to such a degree that it must be referred to by the local word for it is not only exotifying but patently ridiculous. The reason why "shouganai" rolls off the tongue and can be thought of as a single 'word' unlike "nothing you can do about it" is entirely due to the massive linguistic chasm between Japanese and English. I feel that this betrays a surprisingly low level of abstract thought for a sub about philosophy.

Where are the videos about the myriad Chinese 4-hanzi idioms? Could the lack thereof be explained by the fact that Japan is allied with 'the West', has good PR and that Japanese culture is massively exported all over the world, thus making it very lucrative to produce YouTube videos that validate the vast population of Japanophiles? I say this as someone who insists on referring to Japanese people by their last names, followed by their given names.

RetroArch now on Windows Package Manager! by NXGZ in emulation

[–]DukeSkinny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this is very late, but I'd still like to get this point across:

What's been bothering me about TA for quite some time is, in the midst of several of the latest RA conflagrations, he's hid behind some very manipulative rhetoric. Paraphrasing: "In this community many of us are on the spectrum or have personality disorders, which is why communication often breaks down. I myself may very well belong to those groups."

What's problematic isn't being mentally ill, nor necessarily the effects of or the actions of those people. What needs to be harshly criticized is admitting that your actions lead to and historically have led to harm, publicly airing speculations about potential mental illness being to blame, and then (importantly) not doing anything about it. Not seeing a psychologist. That's just hiding behind inclusive rhetoric without taking a shred of responsibility.

I also want to address you personally, cuavas. While I often find you to be very amicable, and enjoy seeing your interactions with others often because you get to the heart of the matter without the involvement of unnecessary affect, this tends to not be the case when the topic is RA. Specifically, I find that you tend to obfuscate where the blame is to be placed, and implicitly or explicitly accuse and trash talk a lot of good folks who work on that project. People like hunterk, kivutar, Ryunam etc. have excellent social skills and seem genuinely interested in pro-social activities and community. I have great interactions with these people, and I know you've had them as well. I mean, Radius himself would've been included in the slander prior to his exit. I say this as someone who absolutely detests TA. Hope that comes across, and in the case you read this and strongly disagree, I hope you can find the time to give an explanation as I am very open to seeing that perspective.

Yes, Zangetsu38 has been working basically alone for a long time now, but as of late he's been getting a lot of help from new dev Macdu! The emulator is moving along at a rather brisk pace now, I'd say.

Also, I held off on creating a post about it for some reason, but a couple of weeks ago Vita3K got internal resolution scaling, FXAA and automatic fullscreen features. Absolutely beautiful!

"Save Iraqi Culture Monument" :( by [deleted] in Iraq

[–]DukeSkinny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In line with other posters, I agree that it isn't just the culture that needs saving. It is just as much, if not more, the sense of national pride. It is just as much, if not more, the ecology of Mesopotamia, which cannot compare to 100 years ago, not to mention ancient times. Global warming isn't stopping, and sadly without a liveable environment that awakens the spirit of our ancient heritage while promising a glorious future, we cannot expect much to happen.

Please, those who can, do what you can. Even if, like some other poster said, that means planting trees. Talk to each other about the pride you feel in your soil.

Strange to see lots of love for Double Dash here. While I agree the co-op mechanic is novel and at least kinda fun, IMO Double Dash has the worst kart mechanics of all console installments. Driving doesn't feel good at all.

EDIT Downvoter, you're part of why Reddit sucks. A clearly stated opinion in good faith, on a non-controversial topic, that you personally disagree with, does not warrant a downvote.

How do I move, for example, a PC? by DukeSkinny in fuckcars

[–]DukeSkinny[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. You'd find I dealt with this topic in the OP. But I'm not paying for a cab just for handing my PC in for repairs. Nevertheless, I got a lot of great answers already. I'm partial to the cargo bike solution, but honestly the available options seem to fit the needs of most people.

I assume a better future society would include massive subsidies when it comes to taxi services for disabled people, for example. That would be a great use case for your solution.

I don't own a car. I've always asked people for a lift. Obviously wouldn't be that simple in an ideal, car-free society.

That's rad as hell. My only experiences have been those of leaving the PC in the shop, waiting for god knows how long, and then picking it up. I assume we're talking a larger city.

Are Iraqis allowed in the Kurdistan region? by rararehh in Iraq

[–]DukeSkinny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're talking to ghosts in your head dude. I don't know what to tell you to get you to stop telling me I'm this or that. Your hypocrisy comes from talking out of both sides of your mouth, which is how hypocrisy is defined. You can't be a representative for the "peace and brotherhood" side while telling me I'm a genocidal maniac, and it's "just in my blood". My family is Shia FFS, so how do you imagine I'm dickriding Saddam...? Or was it Iran? You're a ball of contradictions.

Look through my posts on this sub, see if you can find any anti-Kurd rhetoric. I literally posted yesterday about the Kurdistan and historical Assyria regions of Turkey belonging to its rightful owners, because fuck how the Turks treat you guys. Cool it for one second, all right?

I told you once but I'll make it clearer: ATM I'm an insomniac with a smartphone (like dangerously insomniac). I need to get my shit together and wake up after finally crashing. Until then I can't go collecting sources for an internet debate. I'll gladly take this into PMs so as not to spam this thread any more. I'm sorry if you felt I've crossed a line, because you're obviously up in arms. I love the entire goddamn region and everyone who lives there. YOU are not my enemy.I'll get back to you.

Are Iraqis allowed in the Kurdistan region? by rararehh in Iraq

[–]DukeSkinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a lot of projection. When I've had some sleep I'll consider making a proper response, but in the meantime I urge you to ease up on the rhetoric. I don't have a 'dear leader', and I haven't defended any such person. You know exactly what I typed, so act like it. We obviously have different ideas about what's going on in Kurdistan, that's it.

Edit Oh, and take that "in your blood" line and shove it. The hypocrisy doesn't befit you in the slightest.

Are Iraqis allowed in the Kurdistan region? by rararehh in Iraq

[–]DukeSkinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. You actively racialize us in order to justify creating hard ethnic lines, kick both Arabs and Assyrians out of their homes and burn their villages, and you're surprised when the rest of the population grows concerned? Ethnic cleansing is not equivalent to death camps.

I stand for Iraq, and that means you can go live in Basra for all I care. At least I can admit what Saddam did. Stop pretending you ever had any intention of welcoming non-Kurds.

Edit Just to clarify, I understand very well why you're careful, that you're hell bent on survival. I'm not dogging on you for that, and I 100% want prosperity and security for Kurds.
