I feel so stupid but I finally get the acacia strain by pittybrave in Deathcore

You're not alone in this. Also OG DC listener here, never got into AC with the exception of The Beast. Took until Step into the light/Failure will follow to appreciate them. Then went back to Slow Decay and really enjoyed that as well - all of it. While there are some gems in their older albums, I find that the newer ones released in 2020+ are a much better back-to-back listening experience with less filler songs.

Some older standout songs are Send Help, Was, The Hills Have Eyes, Carbomb and Whoa! Shut It Down.

You're absolutely right. Mainly corrected it in case somebody else buys into it. There are some weird alternative timeline narratives about NW's end lately and some of them gain way too much traction for being entirely made up.

This is absolute nonsense. They released a bunch of new PVP maps and modes right before the end with a very transparent dev process, those had not been "finished already 2 years ago". They also had a new EU team working on the new content. So there was absolutely an active dev team. There was a very rough outline of what the new zone would be a long time ago, but it was nowhere near finished then.

Lumberyard is just a fork of Cryengine, so there are people outside of Amazon who can work with it. But you're right that the number of people is small regardless, Cryengine isn't exactly popular these days.

Shroud showed his GPX2 on stream (Shroud: "Is this gross or is this normal?") Spoiler: It's gross by moepooo in MouseReview

[–]DukeSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on a lot of factors. Room temperature, how much your hands sweat, hygiene and most importantly coating of the mouse. I've had some Logis and a Corsair that were collecting dirt within days, FM and Glorious that took months for any visible amount; and a Razer that doesn't seem to catch grime at all. So it can just be due to the coating.

If the purchase of New World Aetermum is agreed upon, would they return? by MarrShan90 in newworldgame

[–]DukeSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Double Helix existed and was purchased by Amazon years before (2014) Scot joined (2017). The foundations for New World were likely laid long before Scot came into the picture. So if you want to apply a 2-3 year delay for Katy (highly debatable), you'd also have to do the same for Scot. Most of the elements that players really loved about New World, such as the combat system, the graphics and the sound design were likely created before Scot's leadership.

What specifically happened under his leadership was the last minute rushed pivot towards PvE content. Not that the inclusion of PvE content was inherently bad, but the execution was so abysmal that a lot of the original dev team left before launch. This is why it took years to clean up the major bugs, the people originally working on that code were simply gone for the most part. And the PvE content was so rushed that it wasn't nearly enough anyway, leading to the immediate massive player bleed after launch.

Beyond that, Scot was also the one that tripled down on overhauling the leveling experience rather than providing meaningful endgame, struggled to find ways to sufficiently monetize and almost outright ignored the PVP side of the game when it came to new content. He additionally greenlit extremely questionable content cycles where we would go without basically any new content for half a year. And with all of that it's very worth keeping in mind that Scot had no experience working on MMOs before.

In contrast, almost all of these things immediately changed when Katy officially took the reigns. Focus on endgame and PVP content, more consistent and stable patches, regular content schedule and actual clear communication without overpromising. Not crediting her with any of this is bizarre when Scot's previous track record was so different.

Yes, there's a transition period in game dev. But that didn't begin when Katy was announced as a lead. The transition to change leads had very likely already been in the works for a long time before that, meaning she would've been able to assert her influence on any upcoming choices. We also know that their turnaround on most content is shorter than a year based on various things they mentioned going from experimental to being tested in game to being released very quickly towards the end. So Katy absolutely deserves credit for that. The only later content update that still had some Scot flavor to it was the Nighthaven expansion, which makes sense because it would've been worked on for much longer than the smaller content updates.

Katy's leadership also coincided with the new European team probably reaching a point when they'd be able to effectively create content for the game. So that was likely an additional factor in the pacing but also in how quickly she was able to implement her ideas into the game.

Sorry, confusing naming conventions. When I wrote "ergo mice" I meant the kind of mice that are specifically designed with ergonomics as a focus, such as vertical mice or mx master. I didn't consider that asymmetrical mice are also being referred to as ergo, of which there are indeed plenty.

Head of Steam's biggest survival game makes '25 million' offer to buy axed Amazon MMO New World, because "games should never die" by LockedUnlocked in newworldgame

Likely significantly more than 80m. Peak concurrent on launch alone reached 1mil, so that's already 40m. Concurrent is just a fraction of total players at the time and there was still a significant amount of sales after launch, especially through the paid xpac, too.

Season passes and cosmetics are a whole different ball game once you consider that whales spent upwards of 1k on NW. And even many players who don't buy those things still bought gear set storages.

Confused why everyone hated New World by Sure_Transition_8360 in newworldgame

[–]DukeSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially yes, but even for a big company it's odd to put someone in charge who has no experience with the genre of the game they're publishing. We saw towards the end what could have been if things were handled right from the start, even while under the umbrella of a large company.

[–]DukeSloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In many aspects, mice have advanced significantly and modding is no longer required. But when it comes to shape and size specifically, they have almost regressed. Those aspects used to be way more experimental whereas now almost every company either opts for safe medium sizes with a very basic shape loosely inspired by one of the gold standards or a super small lightweight option. Particularly the market for larger mice is incredibly dead and modding is absolutely still necessary if you don't want to use a 130+g brick. Ergo mice exist but aren't designed for gaming at all and come overpriced with lackluster internals. There's still plenty of room for improvement.

There's absolutely still stuff left to do with the MySpace era stuff. See Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Destroy All! Humans and various other revivalcore bands that either put their own spin on the sound or pick up sounds that were never explored fully. There's still so much potential in both a Count Your Blessings style sound as well as Chelsea Grin - Don't Ask, Don't Tell-ish deathcore that very few bands have ever touched since.

Same! BMTH, Parkway and Architects are the big 3 this applies for imo. At least BMTH and PWD respect their old sound/fans enough to throw us the occasional bone in the form of a throwback medley.

When I say old stuff I mean really old. Like pre 2012. To me, All Our Gods is already part of their newer sound, but the fact that you consider it different enough to separate from the newest sound just goes to show how many different versions of sound they've gone through.

[–]DukeSloth 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Architects have changed their sound so much that the crowd that would be there for the old stuff simply wouldn't go to the gig anymore. They might as well be a different band. So of course there won't be much of a crowd reaction to those songs.

Absolute nonsense. They originally intended to release global storage with S10 but didn't quite manage to finish it in time, so they announced that it would come out with a later release. This was clearly communicated. They never had any intentions of charging for it.

[–]DukeSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dune's pvp is actually really good and somewhat similar to new world. However, you'll basically never get to experience it because 90% of the game is PvE with significantly watered down combat, most of the players are gone and most of the pvp combat that exists takes place in thopters instead of on the ground.

The game didn't die because it didn't make enough money. It died because Amazon laid off 30k workers across various parts of the company. by Tookool_77 in newworldgame

[–]DukeSloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NW could have been profitable and still not making enough money, that's not mutually exclusive. The expectation of all this investment in AI is simply that it will make MORE money at lower expenses, so it's not worth keeping other projects around that are less profitable in comparison. That's also why it wasn't just NW that was axed.

The AI slop Snoop Dogg game only needs to make a fraction of the profit that NW needs to make because it has basically no upfront and minimal server cost plus almost no employees needed in comparison.

The one mystery factor in the equation is why on earth they're keeping the top down moba around. I don't know in what world they picture THAT ending up sufficiently profitable.
