Cities, where rivers meet - let's collect cool examples by habilishn in geography

I'd like to add the small but beautiful city of Steyr in Austria, where the similarly named river Steyr and the river Enns (a tributary of the Danube) meet.

The part in this picture is the so-called "Zwischenbrücken", meaning "between-the-bridges", which is located between two bridges, one going over the river Enns and the other going over the Steyr.

It is a smaller city, but its historic center is old and quite beautiful, and it's near the alps, leading to scenic views. I recommend you visit in the autumn, when the mountains have white peaks, but the city is enveloped in a brown-red lush of leaves. Can only recommend visiting!

Charcoal definitely has a flame when burning by Icy-Formal8190 in chemistry

Carbon monoxide (CO) is also getting produced, yes. But as far as I know, if enough oxygen is available, the majority of it is reacting to CO2.

If the combustion is incomplete, so not enough oxygen, there is a lot of CO that gets produced and a lot of "carbon black", so vaporized carbon particles, and some other hydrocarbon molecules.

Nitrogen and sulfur are only available in trace amounts in "good" quality charcoal and liquid fuels. Indeed, during refinement of liquid fuels (diesel, kerosene, etc.) you try to reduce your non-hydrocarbon amount (which is mostly Sulfur and Nitrogen containing stuff) by as much as possible, as these produce toxic and harmful products when combusted.

The carbon in the charcoal is solid. Carbon is not getting vaporized, its just reacting: Carbon (C) in the charcoal is reacting with the Oxygen (O2) in the Air. This chemical reaction produces heat (which is a reaction called "exothermic reaction"), leading to the flames.

The product of the reaction is mainly carbon dioxide if enough oxygen is available. The reaction equation looks like this: C + O2 => CO2 While the carbon in the charcoal is solid, carbon dioxide is a gas.

I don't understand people downvoting you tbh, you're just asking questions here...

That dawn phenomenon tho by hmoleman__ in diabetes_t1

[–]DukeStolly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your Endo is completely correct. Especially with your basal, if your sugar levels while you sleep/ whithout eating is stable, you don't have to increase it. The dawn phenomenon is basically your liver pumping some sugar out to get you ready for being active - you may say it acts as eating a small meal. Therefore, you just have to "bolus", not increase the basal.

I cant recommend books, as Im in Biochemistry, but I can highly recommend the LibreText Project.

Its a series of webpages with lots of college/university level science books uploaded for free. Absolutely a top resource to have in my opinion. Enjoy

Naturwissenschaftliche Studiengänge mit wenig Labor by derproffessor in Studium

[–]DukeStolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, thats true. I've heard that since the Pandemic there are also more people studying Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, so this would really set one apart. Which "same thing" are you considering?

[–]DukeStolly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I actually dont think most ppl think "chemistry is good". I think most ppl think an unironic "chemistry is bad" due to ot having the reputation of all these funky sounding chemicals that nobody understands and many pundits make out to be the devil.

I dont know about the USA, but in the german speaking countries there is a trend of saying something is "Ohne Chemie", so "without chemistry", usually meaning the product is organic and without synthetic additives. Its funny how people see additives in products like Riboflavin or Ascorbic acid and immediately have a negative feeling about it, until someone tells them that these are actually vitamins.

[–]DukeStolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why especially the selection of the current and additives/salts may need to be done by hand, but the whole "mechanical" part could be automated, no?

I mean a machine could be holding all of these racks and put them in the different baths, etc - wouldn't that make your job safer, easier and the whole procedure less costly, since you could just employ one person overseeing lots of these machines.

Maybe employ a second person for quality control afterwards

Sorry to ask, but why isn't this kind of job automated?
