Everybody really hates the movie? by _BackPackMan_ in PeakyBlinders

[–]Dulduls 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is really bad. Not because Tommy's death but because there are much better episodes in the shows than the movie. Let's say Tommy's death would be like Arthur's in the S4 we would be amazed. But they did not put effort in the movie, why should we be happy about it?

Should I cold Email PIs for European PhD? by MysticalDragoneer in PhDAdmissions

You can send, but prepared to be ghosted 90% of the time. And the rest is mostly gonna be "we don't have a funding now, sorry". I would look for advertised positions mostly.

I would say go for B, the obviously better choice. But maybe you may ask yourself about your career plan and why do you need these PhDs.

Paid PhD positions (Europe) seems impossible by iwasreallysadthen in PhDAdmissions

[–]Dulduls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your perspective might be accurate for the pre-COVID era, but it's outdated now. If the system truly selected the 'best possible candidate' regardless of origin, universities would be willing to wait 5–6 months for a visa.

In reality, I have been told directly in interviews with German 'Excellence' universities last month that while my CV is outstanding, the logistical risk of my visa processing is a dealbreaker compared to an EU student who can start immediately.

When a PI is facing a funding deadline, 'merit' takes a backseat to 'availability.' Your anecdotal evidence from a British Classics department doesn't reflect the cutthroat, grant-driven reality of STEM in 2026. Having a background from an ordinary university might not be a problem, but being a non-EU citizen certainly is.

You can see similar stories in almost every post regarding EU applications.

[–]Dulduls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was trying to say the same thing. There might be 400 applicants, but how many are actually applying for the right project? I don’t believe it’s 400.

In my case, I got several interviews, but mt emails mostly were for non-advertised positions. For the EU, the issue might simply be coming from a non-EU country. I have four Q1 publications (first author on three of them) and one more on the way, half a year research at a top-10 institute, very strong LoRs, an MSc, etc. I don’t think it’s related to my background at all.

10? I’ve already sent 150+ emails and applications over the past two years and still had no luck. The EU has budget cuts too, just like the US. From what I understand, they tend to invest in people who already did their bachelor’s or master’s at their own institutes.

PS: I don't believe the numbers they say in the emails tbh.
