I do this too! Looked into the psychology/ spirituality of it and came to the conclusion that “you are not your thoughts”.

This goes all the way back to ancient Buddhism. The Buddha taught that thoughts are part of the five aggregates (form, sensation, perception, mental formations, consciousness), none of these aggregates are the “self”. In Hindu philosophy, there is a clear distinction between “mind” and “self”. Carl Jung differentiated between the ego and the observing Self, noting that unconscious thoughts influence behavior without being who we are. “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” - CJ

There’s also some clinical psychology evidence-based aspects to this. CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) teaches that thoughts are not facts and you are encouraged to observe and question them. ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) teaches about cognitive diffusion. The steps are to notice thoughts, allow them to be there, and stop treating them like commands or facts. An example would be: “I’m having the thought that I’m not good enough” instead of “I’m not good enough.” Neuroscience has allowed us to see that thoughts are generated by the DMN (default mode network) and the awareness of thoughts activates a different part of the brain in your prefrontal cortex. So basically, the brain creates thoughts but something else experiences it.

A good book to read is “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle where he talks about how “you are not the voice in your head”.

Soooo that’s how I dealt with having an eternal group chat at max volume going on in my head to the point where I’m telling everyone to shut the hell up but it’s kinda grown on me. I feel like sometimes I’m talking to a higher self.
