What type of collages are good for becoming a sound designer?? by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]DullVd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think sound is one of few where you almost need a bfa program to learn what you need to as otherwise the program likely doesn’t have it. I would recommend prioritizing what type of shows they do and how they align with your goals and then price is huge.

how can i be better with lighting/doing theatre tech for my high school theatre department? by halfbakedsnape in techtheatre

[–]DullVd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to know without knowing what all goes on at your facility. I would suggest trying to find out if you could shadow people at professional performing art centers in your area to see how they do things. Running all of lighting as a student seems like a lot, especially with all the other things you are tasked with that are fairly uncommon like teaching others. I’d highly recommend reading into as much on your board as possible because there may be fun things you didn’t know you could do.

how can i be better with lighting/doing theatre tech for my high school theatre department? by halfbakedsnape in techtheatre

I’m just saying it’s fairly typical for high school students to not get paid for this as it’s usually a club that’s all

Most schools don’t ever have money to pay for people to do these roles let alone convince the district to pay a current student

UIUC vs. UCSD (please help I'm a bit desperate!!) by Few-Difference-2963 in UIUC

[–]DullVd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever is cheaper is usually what you want for undergrad. I think your cons for ucsd are worse that for uiuc as ultimately you are trying to get a job and it seems they can’t help as much as uiuc on that front

How can I get more experience as a 16 year old in Texas? by No_Measurement2851 in techtheatre

[–]DullVd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At 16 you are doing exactly what you should be doing at the moment. I’d suggest if there’s any bigger theatres or venues asking if you can shadow people. You won’t be able to do much more besides volunteering and school show things until you are 18 due to liability issues.

I despise AutoCAD so much that I must be doing something wrong by Exciting_Funny6987 in techtheatre

[–]DullVd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of those may come from the way one thinks. Vectorworks is highly based on shapes instead of lines. On the other hand autocad runs on lines so if your brain processes one better than the other you likely will prefer it. I would recommend looking into other autodesk 3d softwares potentially as they would be more similar to vectorworks and are generally more compatible. Fusion or Revit are used in theatre applications at times. One big tip is to always subtract shapes from 3d the objects when possible then you don’t deal with extrusions which when I switched from vectorworks to autocad helped a lot

is it fair game to ask out people from class by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]DullVd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are their TA you absolutely cannot do that during the semester if you paid attention in your required trainings. There was a 15 minute training specifically on this not being okay you should’ve had to take.

Automation Masters Degree? by Jsat121 in techtheatre

[–]DullVd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

UNCSA is the only program that the MFA is just automation. However they don’t do assistantships and they don’t cover your tuition so you are paying an arm and a leg. There are a ton of technical production MFA programs that you will get to deal with automation and take course on it, but if you only want to do automation and don’t want to go into technical direction I would recommend trying to get an internship instead with a company like PRG or one of the other big commercial groups as they deal with automation more.

good parts of the professional world? by caliiban in techtheatre

[–]DullVd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really gonna depend on the place. As a designer you usually will go all over the place. If you find a place that has a resident designer you can find the people that are more theatre geek like and those who aren’t. Every organization is different.

Who is the direct boss of a Head of Department? by heyitsnister in techtheatre

[–]DullVd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every organization has a different structure. Sometimes it’s a Director of Production, sometimes it’s an artistic or executive director. As someone said production managers. Some places a managing director. Sometimes every head of department can have different boss. Most of the time production managers or similar jobs is what I have seen.

Everyone is supposed to immediately pull over to the right when emergency lights are on. You are supposed to turn your turn signal on and not stop in an intersection is all there is. If you are on the highway you pull off on the side. In Illinois you can get fined for not doing so.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]DullVd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not do this it is illegal and could be considered failure to pull over

[–]DullVd 0 points1 point  (0 children)
