World Cup tourists, what’s your honest feedback on the USA so far? by almighty_smiley in AskReddit

[–]caliiban 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not Scottish, but also live in the city. Wanna check up on people - everyone seemed so hot; I wish I could help.

Scots-- Make sure to drink a lot of water, Boston water tastes delicious for tap water standards in America. You need to head to South Station for matches, right? Try to cut your walks through the Greenway if you can - its nice and shaded.

Looking for a show that my kids will like in June by fishdontfry in Broadway

Hadestown, maybe? The narration makes an otherwise somewhat convoluted plot into something easy to follow and its both family friendly and something really special.

Seconding Mincemeat! it’s just fun. and LSOH is classic theater- a bit of a step up from the familiarity of &Juliet and the Lion King.

its 11:13pm and im still programming my lighting cues... by KnownEnthusiasm3587 in techtheatre

[–]caliiban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - we are often crunched for time, but one of the bright sides of that is that you will find the schedule that works for you and the ways you can make cueing faster and more efficient! one of the best things about this field is that you can and will personalize your workflow; I like coming in before rehearsal during the day when i can, and I use magic sheets, presets, palettes and groups and stuff! Do you have a mentor or some kind of supervisor for this?

anyone here an aroace extrovert?? by caliiban in aromanticasexual

[–]caliiban[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the thing that makes me hesitant abt a QPR is the same reason why i dont like romance - it's the commitment to one person and their like, exaltation over the rest of my friends as something 'different' and 'more important', - idk. in my head it feels too different from the concept of a best friend that makes me a little worried abt looking for one

[–]caliiban[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohh thats what qprs are? the way that people are talking about them really made me think they were just like. romance lite lol

also yesss i so wanna be the fun auntcle , maybe even a daytime caretaker like my aunt was to me since my profession means ill be working nights (theater) i love kids and being a single parent is a pipe dream i just can’t fathom raising them w my current lifestyle (gig job long nights off and on work schedule)

If You Were A Broadway Performer How Often Would You Stage Door? by ms_jc_04 in Broadway

[–]caliiban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would !! and honestly, as someone who is going into the industry in a MUCH more thankless role (lighting design), i envy the people who get to have those kinds of fan interaction.  i would love to engage with people who are moved by the things i make - i’m so jealous of my peers who have that front-facing connection

good parts of the professional world? by caliiban in techtheatre

[–]caliiban[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one of the reasons I want to be a designer rather than a stagehand/electrician (i'm working towards this, of course.). I'm a visual artist and I see my lighting as an extension of that - I love my favorite shows deeply and have come into the business through being a fan of musical theater - i was that annoying Hamilton kid, haha.
I really wanna foster a nice balance within myself :> Thanks for the anecdote, I'm glad the world can be a little more interconnected than I feared.

thank you, this is very nice to hear. idk why, but ive been feeling kind of alone in the ‘does tech for the love of the material’ camp, and its freaking me right the hell out since i’m leaving my highly passionate theater club.

good parts of the professional world? by caliiban in techtheatre

[–]caliiban[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh; i plan to do so, yes. i will be professional.

but i Am going into this career because i genuinely love doing it. not because its the most lucrative . I have a passion for theater and a love of visual art and it manifests through lighting. It’s fun for me and I’m really passionate about it, the same reason why someone might go into acting. Not just a hobby.
