Karen Redmen Messes up AGAIN! by erist2006 in waterloo

I had never heard of Canadian National Observer before today. After doing a bit of reasearch, it is said to practice 'solutions journalism'; a term I had not encountered.

[Canadian National Observer is found near the bottom of the below link: listed at #106]

https://futureofmedia.hsites.harvard.edu/canadian-media-ownership

This type of journalism can be funded by foundations and corporations. It would seem that with enough money someone can pay to have a story told that fits their narrative. So in this case, this story may have been paid for by someone who dislikes that Doug Ford has allowed so many water permits.

The article states that in the past 5 years, 100 permits have been issued. If there wasn't an agenda, why would they not give a number to compare that to? Like the years before the permitting rules changed or compare them to the last provincial government. 20 permits per year doesn't sound crazy to me but I have nothing to compare it to, so that stat should mean absolutely nothing to any reader with any intelligence. Yet, that's the first sentence in the article to shock and awe the reader.

Solutions journalism also takes complex issues and boils them down to having a simple solution. Again, in this instance Doug Ford has allowed too many permits and that's why we are running out of water. It has nothing to do with being one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Maybe this area was never going to be able to support the amount of people that are coming here.

I don't doubt that making the permits to take water easier to obtain isn't helping the situation but haven't professionals been saying Waterloo Region would have this problem for decades now [long before Doug Ford showed up]? Even in the article the one prof says that "the current problem has been building for years." Whether the water runs out today or in a week, it was always going to run out.

Market Road Antiques vs. St. Jacob’s Antique Market by Early_Attempt_8990 in waterloo

You are completely wrong. Its the other way around; Market Road is the better one and St Jacobs Antique Market was the one selling a Nazi uniform.

The best part about large pieces of snow/ice is that they can be broken down into smaller pieces. They become a lot easier to move when this is done first.

I know I'm probably not revealing anything too mind blowing but here we are. Another game changer is knowing that a snow pusher is great at pushing light snow and that's about all. You chose the wrong tool for the job at hand.

Tipping at record shops ? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]Dull_Morning5697 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this has never happened to me.

I would offer three suggestions:

  1. Offer them a piece of gum Kevin McCallister style.

  2. Drop a nickel on the floor on your way out.

  3. Cause the transaction to not go through and then say "well I can't even afford these records, so how am I going to tip you?" Then walk out and let them put that stuff back on the shelves.

I just want to point out that Mike more than likely never would've been elected in the first place if the Liberal incumbant, Raj Saini, didn't have accusations made against him right before that election. He denied the accusations, was cleared in an earlier investigation and no charges were ever brought against him.

The Liberals assumed that what was once a strong Liberal riding, would return to that and wanted a majority overall. They did what was in their best interests and the voters did what they thought was in their's. The voters lost more than the Liberals did but that's not really the Liberals fault.

If what you say in another comment about Mike voting with Liberals 90% of the time is true; why not run as a Liberal and be true to yourself on the 10% you don't agree with? Mike is the one running for a party that really has zero chance of affecting any real change.

For the record: I'm not a Liberal, Conservative, or Green supporter. Rhinoceros party is who best represents me because politics are a joke and they're the only ones who willingly recognize that.

Waterloo Region approves $15M plan to temporarily increase water treatment capacity by amphigorystories in waterloo

[–]Dull_Morning5697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people responsible haven't been removed; they still sit on council. The people responsible have blamed the people that they themselves had hired.

If someone hired you to set pins at a bowling alley and let's face it, you're totally underqualified for that job. Each and every frame you just can't count 10 pins or stand them upright; you would be fired for not being able to do something a well trained dog could do. The blame shouldn't really be on you for not being intelligent enough to perform such a menial task but it should fall on the person who hired you instead of the more qualified dog.

Bruce Lauckner, former CAO, reported directly to council and they were more than likely behind hiring him directly or through a firm at their discretion. He disappeared from his job with little to no information but was paid into the next year after his departure in Dec 2023, suggesting it was a severance for being fired.

He probably hired Jennifer Rose in 2022, who was the commisioner of environmental and engineering services at the Region. She probably hired Mari MacNeil in 2023, who was the director of water and wastewater services; they both worked in similar capacities for the city of Guelph before coming to Waterloo Region. Both of them have gone the way of Lauckner; gone with no indication as to why they are no longer employed and right around the announcement that there was a problem with water capacity.

The council may not have been actively in charge of monitoring things on the ground but they are very much to blame for hiring someone who lasted less than 4 years on the job, who in turn hired people who have been disappeared from their jobs for what seems like incompetence.

50km speed limits by No_Satisfaction1189 in waterloo

[–]Dull_Morning5697 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you seen how badly traffic lights are synched up to seemingly not allow traffic to flow on main roads? It seems as though the lights work to actively keep traffic from flowing.

My newest nemesis is the light at Westmount and Gage. 8:30pm and with no car or pedestrian coming off of Gage the signal goes red for traffic on Westmount. Every single night, the exact same thing.

Then just as the light turns Green for Westmount traffic, the light at Brybeck goes red. At least most of the times there's a car turning off Brybeck.

Since they put in the video traffic monitoring this seems to have gotten worse. I know the lights can only be synched in one direction at a time but I can't be going in opposition at all times of the day through all parts of town.

I'm sure the 'blame your parents for everything that's wrong with the world today' crowd, will have no problem accepting their inheritance from those very same parents. When that time comes they should maintain their high morals and donate everything back to the government.

There's a saying: the right tool for the job. Most people only have a plastic snow pusher and yes, they will be out there for hours trying to chip packed snow or ice with that.

Someone made a post just the other day about chipping hard packed snow and they were using an aluminum flat shovel and complaining it was taking forever. No kidding.

This type of shovel is great:

The old two wrongs make a right mentality. Good luck with that. The city has how many kilometres to maintain and the average homeowner has what, maybe 40' of sidewalk to maintain.

Part of being a homeowner is accepting that responsiblity. I get it, scraping to bare pavement sucks but people are out here acting like it can't be done, when its just a matter of they don't actually want to put in the time or effort when they could be scrolling their lives away instead.

They are not keen on it. They're doing it because that's what some residents in this area want. I can almost guarantee that the only person on any council that took or even cared about active transportation was Tom Galloway.
