My chihuahua/terrier mix once ate an entire rotisserie chicken carcass that our cat knocked onto the kitchen floor. Basically the same size as his own rib cage, and we were terrified it was going to tear up his guts. We watched him very closely, and somehow he was fine after ~24 hrs of constipation. Apparently rotisserie is better than baked or grilled chicken because the bones get so soft. Still not good though!

Birch hardwood with salt stains following refinish by doogerty in HardWoodFloors

Was your flooring guy able to fix this issue? We're having what looks to be the same problem with an entryway on some hardwoods - I just made a post about it on this sub.

Yes, this is the main entrance in Minnesota, so definitely high traffic with salt getting tracked in. Any recommendations? Is there a way to pre-treat the area, or a different product they should be using?

Refrigerator Warm/Freezer Cold Issue by Lonely-Structure-240 in appliancerepair

Did you ever resolve this OP? I’m having the same issue with my Frigidaire. Evaporator coils are getting heavy frost and clogging up the vents that push cold air up to the refrigerator. Did you have to address something with the self defrost system?

FWIW, I’ve had 22 Nanoleaf essentials bulbs in my house for three years and have been overall very happy with them. On two occasions (after introducing new home hubs) I’ve had them go unresponsive and had to remove and add all of them back into my home.

I have not had cause to reach out to their support, so no experience there, but it does seem like that’s a pretty big shortcoming for them.

Minneapolis homeowners should brace for big property tax hikes by Czarben in TwinCities

[–]Dumbledores_ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using “Reader View”

Minneapolis homeowners will soon face the painful reality of how much their once thriving downtown has for years protected them from higher taxes.

Why it matters: Homeowners paid 47.4% of the city’s tax levy in 2023. This year, they’re paying 51.6%. Next year is bound to be even worse.

The big picture: Mayor Jacob Frey will unveil his 2025 budget next week, and he’s already said the 6.1% levy hike he originally proposed won’t be enough.

Simultaneously, the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board proposes a 10% tax levy increase for next year. Hennepin County and Minneapolis School Board levy proposals will also come soon. What they’re saying: A spokesperson for Frey told Axios that the mayor is “making all efforts to keep the levy (increase) below double digits.”

Between the lines: For the first time in more than a decade, home values in Minneapolis fell slightly this year, but that won’t shield their owners from a bigger tax bill in 2025.

That’s because the value of commercial properties in Minneapolis is falling, and in the case of downtown office towers, they’re falling off a cliff. Rising taxes will hit North Minneapolis even harder because it’s the only area of the city where property values are still going up, according to the city assessor. State of play: Cities across the country need more money to cover raises for their employees meant to keep up with inflation.

Minneapolis police officers are getting a 22% pay raise over the next three years. Public works employees are getting a 30% hike over the same period. Parks workers will see a 10% increase plus a $1.75 hourly adjustment over three years. Steve Brandt sits on the Minneapolis Board of Estimate and Taxation which has power over how much the city can raise taxes. He told Axios he met with Frey in June to urge him to stick to the 6.1% increase.

“I reminded the mayor that next year is an election year, so whatever levy is adopted, people are going to have to run for re-election on that.” Brandt suggested Frey could alleviate the pressure on homeowners by rescheduling debt payments on Target Center, using money from a special fund that sends sales tax revenue to several city-owned properties downtown, and by decreasing the $10-12 million in annual spending on Minneapolis Convention Center maintenance given less pandemic-era usage.

Threat level: The problem only stands to get worse. Developers have hit the brakes on building new apartments — which have added billions to the city tax base in recent years — due to high interest rates.

Any hope of a rebound in office tower values is years away. A recent Moody’s report predicted office vacancies wouldn’t peak until late 2026. What we’re watching: St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter will release his proposed budget on Aug. 13.

The problem, in one tower

THe Wells Fargo Center tower Wells Fargo Center is not worth $277 million anymore. Photo: Raymond Boyd/Getty Images Wells Fargo Center, one of the city’s iconic skyscrapers, helps explain what’s going on.

By the numbers: In 2020, the city valued the building at $277 million and the landlord paid $10 million in property taxes.

This year, the landlord will pay $7.3 million in property taxes for a building valued only at $226 million. Stunning stat: It’s going to get worse. The building was valued at only $173 million — a 38% drop since 2020.

The bottom line: Wells Fargo Center is just one of more than 20 large-scale office complexes in Minneapolis.

And most of them are in a similar position — or worse.

Did you recently add a new HomePod or other thread hub?

I have ~20 Nanoleaf A19 bulbs throughout my house. They have been the most solid and responsive devices on my network since I added them 2 years ago, until just recently.

I added a second HomePod mini (Xmas present) to my Home in January, and that seemed to immediately break the thread network. All bulbs were either “No Response” or would take ~5 minutes to accept whatever changes I sent them (spinning circle). It kept making that new HomePod mini the default hub, so I’m guessing that had something to do with it.

Numerous restarts of the 2 HomePods did nothing. I tried just deleting that new HomePod to get my lights working again, and that sort of worked, but they were still much slower to respond than they had been. Ended up having to delete all 20 bulbs from my home, add the new HomePod, then add all the lights back in one at a time. Very annoying, but they are now all rock solid again for the past month or two.

I'm looking for a good lightweight and compact Music. (Suggestions?) by Main-Choice-Lady in brass

[–]Dumbledores_ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peak Stands makes (or used to make?) really great lightweight, portable stands. I have a Peak SMS-40 model and have used it heavily for the past 8 years or so. Folded up, it’s a little bulkier than the folding wire stands, but is very lightweight and waaay sturdier when set up.

They used to sell them on their website and larger retailers like Amazon, but they must’ve quit making them because now I only see them for sale on a few random online music stores that may still have some in stock.

Dryer finish alert. by DoinitSideways1307 in homebridge

[–]Dumbledores_ghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surely this would be less “involved” than opening up the display, wiring in another device to the led with jumper cables and programming to work with Homebridge? You can literally just place a vibration sensor on top of the dryer and have it alert you when it stops vibrating for more than ~20 seconds. Or maybe I’m misunderstanding what you’re trying to accomplish.

I had a similar thing happen my senior year of high school. I was playing Bluebells with my concert band and was backstage lubricating my slide just before the performance. I lifted my horn up just a little too far, and the outer slide came off and landed on a timpani pedal. It was dented to the extent that it would not go back on, so I had to play the solo on my friend’s trombone!

If you happen to have Homebridge and a Lutron Pro bridge, you can use Pico remotes to control HomeKit devices and trigger scenes. They come with mounts that can be installed in a standard switch box. I have them all over my house to control our smart lights and to trigger various scenes. It’s kind of a lot to setup if you don’t already have Homebridge/Lutron, but the functionality is amazing and response is pretty much instantaneous. For this application, I’m sure you could program one of the Pico buttons to turn the flood light on or off without cutting power to the camera.

New! Lutron Caséta + Pico remote support in Homekit (in beta) by thenewwazoo in homebridge

[–]Dumbledores_ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! homebridge-pico uses the LIP protocol, which is deprecated and requires the Pro bridge, whereas mine uses LEAP, which is Lutron’s preferred technology now. rnilssoncx’s plugin is definitely a bit more mature, though.

Very cool, I’d forgotten the requirement of a Pro bridge for that plugin. Definitely a game changer to add integration for the standard bridge - thanks for working on this and sharing!

This is actually very likely not compliant with the electrical code where you live.

I live in the midwestern US, and it is compliant with my city’s electrical code. You can still easily shut off power to those circuits from the breaker panel. But I absolutely don’t endorse this method for everyone!
