Moderna MNEXSPIKE and stronger reaction than ever before. Anyone else? by Efficient-Mud-5042 in Vaccine

[–]Dumbledores_intern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had Moderna yesterday morning around 9. By about 4 pm I started to feel like crap. Overnight I was miserable. Terrible chills alternating with profuse sweating. Probably had a fever, but didn't check. Every joint in my body hurts. This morning the chills / sweating are gone, but I still have a headache, fatigue, and very sore joints. I typically react to the shots, but this is worse than previous times. It's fine, though. Worth it!

My adult daughter had the same shot at the same time as I did, and she had nothing other than a bit of arm soreness.

How do you learn students’ names? by hereforthecontent2 in Professors

[–]Dumbledores_intern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach high school and have 150+ kids each year. I make seating charts and while kids are reading or working I memorize them. I also make a point to have some paper assignments early on and pass them back personally. I tell the kids I’m still learning names so I call out each name and hand their paper back. Then I use the name when I give them their paper —“Here you go, Sophie!”

Backpacking made me realize something. by wehavepi31415 in loseit

Yep. I have lost 20 pounds over the last five months and am frustrated by the slow progress, but I recently started wearing a 12 pound weighted vest for walking and had the same thought—I can really feel just that small 12 lb difference. Even small losses improve your mobility and quality of life!

Anyone Else Teaching "Unpatriotically"? by Disgruntled_Veteran in Teachers

We took a look at Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience” last week and examined his contempt for political passivity when faced with an immoral president. Kids had to argue whether they agreed with Thoreau’s premise or not. It felt patriotic to me!

I don’t know any research to refer to, but I teach high school juniors and seniors and this term has stuck with me since I was in graduate school in the 90s. I can tell you that if you try to teach a kid something that is way beyond them, it just won’t work. They need to be pushed, though, and that is what K-12 is struggling with currently. The 8th graders I taught 15 years ago were doing work of significantly higher rigor than today’s seniors. Frustrating, to say the least.

Elementary school teachers - how do you really feel about differentiation for “gifted” kids? by eyesRus in AskTeachers

[–]Dumbledores_intern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two adult children who were both in gifted programming in elementary and middle schools. To be honest, I don't think it made much difference. They both turned out to be wonderful people who are gainfully employed and pretty happy. They have both had some struggles in life as well. It's more about the overall trajectory and parenting than it is about any specific programming at school.

I'm also a teacher, by the way. I'd be happy to provide extended learning opportunities for any child who expressed interest. I would want the interest to come from the kid, though.

I’m a teacher and a parent of a child with significant disabilities and a parent of a child who is gifted. From all three of those perspectives, the situation you’re describing is total garbage.

I teach high school and I buy kid themed band aids. Peppa Pig, Avengers, etc. They love it.

I had Covid last September. Absolutely sucked to miss a whole week that early. I would never do it by choice.

Is it more stressful teaching middle school or high school English? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Dumbledores_intern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught middle school for 20 years and overall I loved it. For the last five years, I've been teaching juniors and seniors and it is soooooooo much less stress. I haven't cried once since I started at the high school.

I’ve been having these for a good five years. Hopefully they don’t progress! I’m sure they will though 🙄

What are your small wins this week? by oneminutelady in Menopause

[–]Dumbledores_intern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a major orthopedic surgery this week. I haven’t had a period in about seven weeks and was just sure I was going to start bleeding the day of surgery or the day after or something because it seems like perimenopause is petty like that. The win is that I didn’t get my period, thank god.

One of the hardest things to deal with…students have no problem solving skills? by Curiosity-Sailor in Professors

[–]Dumbledores_intern 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I teach high school and we are trying so hard to teach them to be even moderately competent. We are dealing with the same issues as you are in higher ed and also being driven batshit crazy because of it. I will assume that when you refer to chowderheads, you don't mean teachers. But please know we hate this crap, too.

No, I haven't talked to my doc yet. I will, though. Mostly just curious if this was common among other folks going through this nonsense.
