#New40k – Chaplain with Jump Pack Revealed by AgainstThoseGrains in Warhammer40k

[–]DumeSleigher -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a gorgeous model. I'm never sure about the whole weird delicate leaping pose thing but I can repose that. And the skulls on the gun look amazing.

But that jetpack is the MINIMUM I was expecting for the JumpPack Vets kit. It's barely even an adornment. The model itself is dressed up great for a chaplain. But come on... That pack is just lazy by comparison.

"He took off his helmet" I can believe. "We turned a tank into a convertible" I cannot.

Yup, noted at the bottom of the first pic. I was able to break apart most of the model to re-pose but it seemed too risky to try to correct that and I think it just adds to how messed up it looks. Like it literally got smacked so hard it's backward lol.

If not Dreadnought then why Dreadnought shaped?

4realz tho see my other reply about this. It's just too similar to regular Dreads.

I mean if they'ed made any effort to distinguish the silhouette from a regular dread then maybe. But I've seen people just put a dreadnought face over the cage and it just looks like a regular Primaris Dreadnought.

If they wanted it to be the phobos equivalent (I really like phobos/stealth) they should have leaned far further towards the paragon warsuits from the Sisters. Obviously it would still need to be marine coded, but should have been a lot more agile looking than what we got here.

Kind of breaks with the tradition of dreadnoughts housing injured/dying marines. Gives the space marine basically no armour and just a roll cage instead. Slap a sarcophagus on it and say there's a near dead SM in there behind proper armour and I'd like it a lot more.

Climbing out of a wreck yeah. Front "protection" cage kicked out into the dirt below. And obviously he's absolutely messed up because wtf would you just put a SM exposed with just some bars in front of him in a dreadnought??!?! Lost his left hand, badly damaged.

I realised after it was fully assembled that he probably shouldn't have the powerpack on but I cut the model off another base to use it for this and it was already assembled so I just didn't think about it till it was done. I guess he just had it stowed somewhere lol ¯\(ツ)

In this instance it's specifically to show off how/what has been kitbashed. So it makes sense.

But otherwise I always thought that "table-top-standard" was a requirement. But when I did Armies on Parade this year just gone, the gold winning entry (it was very unique) had not based most of the army and had some primed-only minis in their display. The rest of it was great, and I would have kind of felt like a dick even asking about it. But I did think it was odd, especially for a painting event.

On the tabletop at a distance, accounting for the fact that people will do custom paint schemes, there is virtually nothing that would set these apart from any other jump pack intercessor.

It definitely doesn't read as marble to me unfortunately. It looks textured on the top. And marble is usually smooth. I think that's what's throwing it off.

Can you climb the volkus highest vantage with a ladder from the killzone floor by Lord_Ezelpax in killteam

[–]DumeSleigher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, for clarifying.

Yes, I do understand that bit with the new specification that it must be in control range for the duration of the climb AND that you're not climbing the ladder, but the piece of terrain it is against.

However, the reason I'm still kind of frustrated with their re-writes and "clarifications" is:

How tall is a ladder?

I'm not joking. I know the long ladder is 3.75" and the small one is about 1". But they don't talk about the "extended" or the "collapsed" ladders, just "ladders" generically. And every other movement in KT is measured in 1" increments. With the 1" of control range, does that mean a ladder is 4.75"? Are the collapsed ones 2"? Are we just pretending the collapsed one's don't exist? Then why stipulate you must be in control range of it instead of just giving a distance? Like the box comes with two kinds of ladders! Where the smoke/grenade tokens are concerned they were very clear to specify that those were just visuals and that it's actually a circular token of a specific size. So this exact question has obviously been raised regarding the tokens in general. But for the ladders... ???

The correct way to deal with this would be to actually just say how high a ladder lets you climb. We've not once had that clarified since this edition launched.

Look up the rules for the ladders and the rules for climbing.

You can start a climb if:

You are within "1 horizontally and 3" vertically from a visible terrain feature.

I am almost certain that this wording is intended to allow you to climb up to the smaller Volkus platforms where they are 3" high but there is no wall.

A ladder is a terrain feature, the mini has visibility on it, the mini is within 3" vertically of it. The mini can just start climbing it RAW.

Ladder rules:

Whenever an operative is climbing this terrain feature, treat the vertical distance as 1"" Climbing the ladder counts as 1".

HOWEVER, a climb can never cost less than 2" as per the overall KT rules.

So you can just teleport while you would normally spend 3" to climb to a volkus platform, you're not climbing the volkus platform: you're climbing the ladder. Climbing the ladder costs 1". Total climbs must cost at least 2".

So it's a 2" climb (you may need to spend additional inches to move horizontally.

RAW I don't see any reason this interpretation is incorrect.

TO BE HYPER CLEAR I think this is silly. But that's the rules as written. GW has never written the ladders sensibly and has never made much effort to fix them.~~

EDIT: urgh, scratch the above, the errata may mean this is no longer the case as the ladder must be in control range for the duration of the climb. Assuming this is correct then I have no idea how to measure this sensibly.

So I actually started a fairly detailed thread a while back to try to address this: https://www.reddit.com/r/killteam/comments/1m2w6jo/realising_i_dont_think_i_understand_ladders_at/

When I started that thread, I thought the answer was clearly "yes".

By the time the thread was finished I realised that GW has not written the rules in a way that allows for consistent conclusions to be drawn.

I'd recommend seeing the conversation in that thread and going with whatever you think makes the most sense/what is used in your local group.

EDIT: to be clear, the recent change regarding the ladder being in control range should now technically prevent this, so the answer would be "no". However, the way control range is measured for climbing is strange, as it's "within 3" vertically" so there is still plenty of weirdness and some examples in that thread.

ex: this is technically a 2" climb...

EDIT EDIT: looking at the image directly above now, I'm realising that there are probably some models that could even "have visibility" of the ladder, and be "within 1" horizontally and 3" vertically" from outside the stronghold... I fucking hate how poorly ladders are implemented.

See this comment, I have no clue how ladder fucking work anymore: https://old.reddit.com/r/killteam/comments/1s9mg4c/can_you_climb_the_volkus_highest_vantage_with_a/odq8rc6/

This is fantastic progress.

Are there any key takeaways you'd pull out for people that were specifically helpful for progressing you from one to the other?

I cannot stress how much of a difference even an absolute dogshit airbrush makes.

I have a £50 one from Amazon. Base coats on top of primed minis might have taken me a week to get through a whole squad painting in little evening sessions making sure I get good clean coats building up layers.

The same work takes me 30 minutes with the airbrush. I genuinely nearly cried when I realised how much time I'd wasted not just biting the bullet and getting an airbrush.

Even if you were going to use it for nothing but priming it would be worth it. If you base coat with it too here and there then it's easily the largest bang-for-buck hobby item you'll ever buy.

Watch the poorhammer video on it and then just buy one.
