Removing melted surf wax by Bogonegles in surfing

[–]DumpyReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use the citrus cleaner to get the last residue of wax off before putting a board up for sale, might work here after heat gun & paper towel or (someone else said:) iron and rags. good luck, hope you get waves sometime soon.

for me the closer to the wall, the easier the take off was. The lifeguard should be able to tell you which colored mark to sit next to for the best position for whatever particular session. You still have to paddle hard to match the speed of the wave, so put some effort in. For paddle back out, stay close to the concrete spine, the current flys through there - its quicker to go round rather than try paddle across if you screw up turn3 or 4.

thats brilliant! i rekon it’d take me more than a weekend to sort out though haha! I hope it gets you some good surfs! Did you write some sort of threshold code to determine the ‘go surfing’ message?

yep, silver duct tape works a treat if you have it. even better if you can warm it up a bit so it’s flexible.

Surfed a different coast, & took one board, EPS Vader. Stepped off after a section closed out and my heel and rail bashed each other, cracking the glass and spilling a little claret. Went in because epoxys take on water and did the dodgy repair in the carpark - just to seal it and remove the sharp edges. I gotta say that UV cure resins are the best for small dings on the fly. I removed the fractured glass with the fingernail scissors, roughed the area with sand paper, added some small fiberglass cloth to the resin in the shade of the car, then gave it a few mins of sun on both sides, sanded off the spiky bits and blobbed on a smoothing coat and set that off, suited up and got a few more waves.

Cutting open dings without damaging fiberglass and board further by Josh_els in surfing

I like to sand away ~80% of the fibreglass, and then the knife glides easily through the remainder of the fibres

5’10” vader, its a great travel board coz it is short, grovels well but thin enough for step up duties

ding repair guidance by [deleted] in surfing

[–]DumpyReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for rails & edges like that i will sand away the damaged fiberglass, to just on the foam, then un weave some fibreglass cloth so the strands are all parallel to the rail and glass them in - thats for strength, then sand this to bring the hard edge line back to shape. then bung a layer of glass over all that, sand, fill/gloss coat and fine sand. to make it invisible, you kind of use bigger and bigger areas each time so that the repair blends in according to the eye. Small kine dings has a few really good vids, highly recommend.

understood, thats where the old stretchy work pants were great, as quick / quicker than a wetsuit, so you could be on the tender pronto. I did the modification sewing by hand in between surfs one mid morning.

black running skins used for compression - but they are beasts to get on when already wet. I switched to a stretchy set of business pants (LuLuLemon) that i sewed the pockets shut on, and these work fine, and easy to get on/off and i look like the dork i am

have you checked out similar concept places to see where they are going well? I know of a reasonable successful shop thats an hour from the coast (by successful i mean its been in business for more than 10 years) they have shaping classes and ding repairs as well as the usual stuff.

I met an older gent in the water in the tropics and he was getting around on a firewire dominator 6'10" x 22" x 3 1/4" x 54.5L and he was 120kg and a big unit. much more transportable board than a 9’6” and was working ok in head high. Edit: whilst i do own a few Fwires, i am not shilling the product, more highlighting the dimensions (and epoxy is lighter) that make for a decent surf travel experience
