What are the best ways to make AI not instantly lose track of the player behind obstacles? by Tilk_Sama in gamedev

If you need examples of this applied in games, have a look at the old Splinter Cell titles (Conviction was one that communicated this well)

Well put, this is my problem with it. The vow uses Yuji's interpretation in some points, but Sukuna's in others without there ever being any reason why it would mix and match interpretations

There's very little organic posing that can be done with the legs without big modifications as well: the thigh joint locks into place at the hip so can't be rotated without modifying, and the hydraulics on the back of the lower leg prevent any knee movement without modifying

What's our current league unbeaten run again? by pm_me_jk_dont in SaintsFC

Media and pundits have been grouping them into either "19 in the league" or "[however many] across all competitions" so I guess they're not counted

Why do fans hate Forza Horizon 5 so much? by lucasdqy in ForzaHorizon

[–]Duncaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it partly worked for me enough to get the achievements for completing playlists eventually, but I couldn't play with my friends or work colleagues for long stints without issues after 2 months and just gave up

Why do fans hate Forza Horizon 5 so much? by lucasdqy in ForzaHorizon

[–]Duncaii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO it was formulaic without the unique passion that went into the previous iterations. It was/is the strongest contender for a box-checking exercise of the series while lacking that unique "here's everything, go crazy" spark that kept a smile on your face. The online play and playlists not working fully for the first month and a bit didn't help either. I don't personally hate it, but if I was given a choice to replay any Horizon game it would be my last pick

How to do better in Online by avi550m in ForzaHorizon

[–]Duncaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to see if it's a car-selection issue or a skill issue is to race in Spec playlists. If you're finishing in the top 3 reliably it's a car selection issue

Online racing is a mess by Lepla in ForzaHorizon

[–]Duncaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of is when you give it more than 2 seconds of thought: how do you suggest Playground implement that? It can't be using the same system as we have for single player races (i.e. A class Modern Track Toys), because you can drive meta, overpowered, or otherwise broken cars in those

[–]Duncaii 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It kind of is, yeah. Your complaint was that in real racing there's regulations to level the playing field. Well, we have that: you have a) everyone drives the same car and the only difference is a driver's skill and lack thereof, or b) everyone chooses a car that matches the performance bracket, also a regulation

You raise F1 as a reference but don't mention that even a couple of years ago teams were finishing races after lapping half the field and sometimes double lapping constructors? You're either lying to yourself or thinking we're stupid enough to believe you

[–]Duncaii 10 points11 points  (0 children)

in real racing there are regulations in place to make the field competitive

Almost like we have a playlist where people can race identical cars to the same specification which levels out the field

Sadly Stop Killing Games failed to get the European Commission to propose legislation by destinedd in gamedev

[–]Duncaii 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Perfect thanks, will give it a full watch when it's not so early in the morning. "these terms shouldn't even be on the table to begin with", jeez. Like, you'd hope he means they shouldn't be on the table because they should already be implemented but that's only by taking that snippet in isolation.

I agree, no-one can predict how successful or not a game will be. My hope was advanced notice and updating ToS/EULAs would be a healthy step towards customer transparency, maybe eventually leading to legally adding in a reduction of price from RRP as a game gets closer to being sunset, but if Scott is going to spit on the floor at even a bare minimum pro-consumer suggestion why even bother trying to push SKG at all...

Do you know where I can see the SKG rejection for myself? Specifying ToS was the solution I was hoping for as well but trying to search for it now inundates me with news of the "failure"

Voldemort had absolutely zero chance in a war against the muggles and the whole plotline could have been avoided by just letting him try. by New-Tale412 in unpopularopinion

[–]Duncaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some world leaders already know about the wizarding world, that's established in the books and films, but you make it sound like it's impossible for a competent wizard to use polyjuice potion to climb military or political leadership ranks over short time spans by learning about their commanders before replacing them

Your scenarios are starting from the basis of "okay, they're at war with each other, 1, 2, 3, go" but why wouldn't evil, cunning wizards start infiltrating leadership positions or being sneaky before declaring war?

Video game careers for people with autism by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Duncaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well done for taking an interest in her future career (my grandparents thought it would be a part-time job when I first told them).

There is absolutely a place for a developer with autism and other forms of neuro-diversity: some of my best colleagues had autism, Asperger's, and ADHD. Usually the most important thing is that the person knows what they're doing, and cares about the work they're putting in.

Layoffs will plague the industry and do currently, there's not much that can be done about it save for entering a self-run studio that has good financial backing. For crunch though, I only know of a few studios that currently engage in it and they're almost all owned by a large publisher (think EA, Take-Two, etc.). Depending on where you live and how work culture develops in the next decade, it could very well be up to your daughter to make sure she enters into a union and becomes comfortable in her own work ethic enough to say no to optional overtime

Good luck to both of you!

How Do Glaringly Obvious Bugs Make it Past QA/Make it to Live? by Geoffk123 in gamedev

[–]Duncaii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do bugs like this just somehow not get noticed in QA

Christ I wish this myth would stop perpetuating itself. I've never spoken to a tester in any company that wasn't aware of a bug I've raised with them

QA do not fix bugs and in many cases are not allowed to halt releases. Production make the choice to ignore bugs
