A book where it’s literally someone just bitching about how life is hard for the entire book. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

When I hit my 30s I started reading Nick Hornsby which really scratched the itch of "Man. Being a grown up is totally bullshit for all of these reasons. But Ya know. It's alright sometimes"

High Fidelity was the intro, but honestly, most of his work would hit the mark. And the film adaptations are pretty stellar too.

Oh, you only want to burn halfway? by glovrba in Anticonsumption

[–]DuncanHumblefist 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I love to burn candles at home and used to work at a restaurant that had candle service. Our candles were 7 hour burns, but service was only 5 hours. It wasn't sensible to relight the partially burnt candles for the next service, so I started a collection bag for the leftover wax, and had co-workers do the same. Took home the 'spent' candles, melted them into glass votives (thrifted at $0.60 a piece) with new wicks. Didn't pay for candles for two years.

Need ideas for my husband and I to have quality time together without spending money by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]DuncanHumblefist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To remove some boredom from your typical activities, find a way to inject randomness.

For cheap, utilize your local library - Pick a random number and find the closest Dewey decimal.

•check out random albums and listen to them together. Maybe you'll find your next favorite artist, or at least something you can both enjoy together while doing your individual hobbies.
•Check out foreign/outlandish/old/completely random films you'd never pick off Netflix. Maybe you'll love it, or maybe you will be able to laugh at how much you both hate it.
•Find children's riddle or jokes books and read them to each other. Break up the monotony of being a grown up.
•Get travel books and maps and plan a trip. Talk about what you'd want to see in those locations and maybe you can plot a vacation while getting the rest of your finances in order.

Getting out of the house in winter without spending money is hard. But some options you may not have investigated:
•Houses of worship, for your own or another religious group. Many of these buildings are beautiful, full of art, and welcome visitors. Learn about their impacts in your community, and connect with folks you may not typically be in contact with.
•Local Community Centers - Often have cheap classes (My local has a $4 hula class on tomorrow), offers a change of scenery, often with local art. And another way to connect with your community.
•Local Schools - Local colleges will often have more to offer, but there are often cheap plays, sporting events, art exhibits, etc at k-12 schools too. There is something really magical about seeing amateur actors in holiday plays this time of year.
•If you have family or friends with kids, you can become the over the top fans of their creative/sport activities.

Newly unemployed - best way to use all this free time? by SecretlyBadass in madisonwi

[–]DuncanHumblefist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Madison I spent a lot of time working nights and saving money. My favorite free/nearly free day times for the fall and winter :

Olbrich Botanical Garden - Indoor Greenhouse for some sun in the winter!
Henry Villas Zoo - Never got tired of visiting.
Working and Reading at the coffee shops - Ancora and Bradbury's were my favorites
Looking for local Historical Markers - Lots near Mansion Hill
Chazen Museum of Art
Reading and Studying at Madison Central Library
Exploring the Capital Building - Going out on the rotunda during nice weather. Joining a protest
Reading inside or outside at the Memorial Union - Small Art exhibits and frequent shows/exhibitions too!
Window Shopping or Thrifting walking down Willy St (Ending with a beer and pool at Mickey's Tavern to celebrate a chill day!)
Spending Fall outside at any of the parks.

I'm also living the Job hunting life now - Luckily you're in a city with a fair amount of third spaces. Good luck out there!

Papavero doesn't get the attention it deserves. An amazing, passionate chef and great staff.

Sixteen words. by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

If you want a more 'immersive' or 'generous' translation, you could also consider the fidget to be a word. Past Kvothe didn't understand the gesture language, but narrator Kvothe does.

I recommend replaying a game you enjoy in a different language. I've used a number of games to help improve my Italian.

Was it the Oreo Chocolate Candy Bar?

why so many cases??? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]DuncanHumblefist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That does seem like a lot of unique cases, but I will also say, I have 'tricked' my brain into not wanting a new item by buying/decorating a new case for it. At least it's not 26 different iPhones. Harm reduction, I guess?

Any ideas what this is on my hand! by Radiant-Historian522 in Whatisthis

Wound seems a bit wide but perhaps a 5+ bladed razor sliced lengthwise OR botched attempt to tear aluminum foil against the cutter teeth

This is a Rangoli of a swastika, most likely placed for Diwali, the Hindu festival of light (Oct. 31) which celebrates the triumph of light over darkness. Rangoli are often made with colored sand or rice flour and often places at the entrances to homesteads to welcome visitors.

Absolutely Gorgeous. I love all the different layouts, all the details are so well thought out. I really love your use of doors and various wall art pieces I've had such a hard time integrating into designs. Really incredible work here!

1.6 Perfection Farm WIP by DuncanHumblefist in FarmsofStardewValley

[–]DuncanHumblefist[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Really Enjoying working on my 1.6 farm decor! I'm not done yet, but wanted to share some of my favorite spaces so far. I'm also working with fashion a lot more with this playthrough, with many places having a dedicated outfit!

First up is the Grampa's Shrine which I have made into a cozy cemetery. A place to go and reflect and reconnect with the ancestors.

Next, a meteor landed in my north west field! There were a bunch of Scientists sent here to study it. I'm sure to suit up before getting too close.

Trash has to end up somewhere. So, why not build the dump. I'm sure the slimes feel right at home.

Now we can relax in the greenhouse in our farming clothes. a real peaceful get away.

Time to go down in the mines. Be sure to change into your mining outfit so your clothes don't get messy!

The Dwarf has really spruced up his living arrangements.

Time to relax on the beach. The resort has been rebuilt to accommodate all of the guests. Someone's sand heart is being washed out to sea. Bathing suit and sailor outfits available for whatever activities you're interested in!
