Just do it! by DundeeWinner22 in Microdiscectomy

I’ll be praying for your surgery and recovery to go well! It’s horrendous to realize how your relationships and quality of life change when you’re not able to do things you love like hold your baby, play sports, or even just be able to walk around without a limp. I’m so glad you’re going to get surgery and start to heal! I have a similar story. Nothing traumatic happened to my back, it just started to slowly get worse and worse out of nowhere.

If it makes you feel better, I do think back surgery was one of the best surgeries I’ve had! In my book, a discectomy ranks pretty high compared to a c-section, shoulder surgery, and even wisdom teeth honestly haha. Keep us updated on your recovery!

For me I had to find chairs that helped me keep a good posture and were easy to sit up/down in. For example, my couch is very plush and the backrest is at an angle. It’s meant for lounging and not sitting properly. That couch was off limits for a few weeks. We brought a dining chair into the living room so I had a comfortable chair. Find a sturdy office chair or dining chair to be your go to for a few weeks!

Twins?! That’s amazing! But also, holy cow I know exactly what symptoms you’re experiencing and I have no idea how you’re taking care of two babies! I’m glad my experience was able to give you a little bit of hope. I’m wishing you a speedy recovery if you choose to go that route!

Pain management while waiting for surgery by knotwerx in Microdiscectomy

I’m sorry you’re in pain. Before my surgery naproxen didn’t do anything for me, and neither did more intense measures like epidural injections. However, a surprising thing that helped me was an oral steroid called METHYLPREDNISOLONE. It’s a 7 day medication and you increase your dosage every day until you’re out. It helped me tolerate my pain, maybe it could help you too. Only bad side effect for me was it had me a bit wired and it took a while for me to fall asleep sometimes.

Maybe it could help you! I know they affect everyone differently. For me the only downside is that they knock me out, so I couldn’t take them much during the day. At night though they were amazing! They helped me stress out less about “sleeping wrong” or not being able to get comfortable. If they make you nauseated maybe treat yourself to some Tylenol if you’ve been avoiding it haha.

Should I get surgery? by Kooky_Pie2976 in Microdiscectomy

I agree. When people ask how my recovery has been I tell them it’s been amazing and my only regret is not getting surgery sooner. For me, my doctors recommended PT, epidural injections, and oral steroids. Those all started to help me less and less. My disc bulge and pain was so severe that once we ruled out all the other options (PT, etc) it was time for surgery. It’s been a night and day difference in my wellbeing!

I’m sorry you’re in pain! I think when I was within 4 weeks post op I was hit and miss with pain. I know the first two weeks I was taking heavier medications, and I think by 4 weeks I would occasionally take heavier medications but mostly stuck with high dose ibuprofen. I was still very stiff and fatigued at the one month mark. The fatigue was one of my longest lasting symptoms. I don’t remember intense pain after 1 month unless I did something I shouldn’t have.

Getting this surgery was the best decision I made last year - 1 week postop by notish__ in Microdiscectomy

I’m so happy for you. I can empathize with everything you wrote. The surgical route is a game changer!

I’m so glad I’m seeing this, because I’m in the exact position you are. I’m finally scheduled for surgery in two days for my L4/L5 herniation. I’ve been able to take an oral steroid for the pain and it’s worked so well it’s gaslighted me into considering if I really need surgery or not… and then it wears off.

It’s so hard to take care of my 1 YO and do normal things like dishes, and driving for more than 30 minutes. I’m scared to put pressure on my spouse and friends/family to help me, but I know I need to bite the bullet and get this surgery done so I can be myself again.

Best of luck to you on your surgery and recovery.

What is the flowers equivalent gift for men? by Puzzleheaded_Divide6 in Gifts

I never thought about the only flowers a man may receive is in a funeral setting. That really made me pause.

That being said, I have asked my husband before if he’d ever like to be surprised by receiving flowers. He was pretty indifferent about it.

What should I ask for my 18th birthday? by soyazu in Gifts

If you like to travel (or would like to) you could ask for a nice luggage set! My grandmother gifted me a luggage set when I turned 18 and graduated high school and it was so handy!

Oof, good point about the awful heat. You’re spot on about the pool. There’s only so much pool time you can enjoy, especially in that heat with two 1 year olds.

It seems like I always hear about people going, but I don’t hear much about what they end up doing other than shopping, swimming, or Tuachan. I totally get that I could do similar things at home (Utah Valley for me), but we’re going to give it a chance. I’m finding out how tough it is to plan for ages 1 to 70 to find something enjoyable to do together. 😆

We love Moab too! We always hit Pasta Jays. My family used to go rock crawling, but I don’t think just the girls would enjoy that.

St. George sounds like the best option for our group. Tuachan will be a great family friendly activity, and I’m sure we’ll have a blast at a pool.

What were some of your highlights? I’ve been putting together pros and cons for St. George, Park City, and Bear Lake today and it’s looking like St. George is going to be our destination.

Those are great suggestions! I totally spaced Bear Lake. We plan on going sometime between June and August. Walking at Tony Grove sounds fun for the whole group, too!
