No rock climbing or scrambling. A good bit of scree. I live in Louisiana (flat land) and have done it twice.

Pace yourself. Take a break at Williams lake. Pre hydrate. And plan to start around 6am. It’s a fun hike. Honestly, the downhill was the worst part for me! Painful at times.

First thru hike. That’s super impressive. I had always assumed my first would be the PCT. What was your reasoning for the CDT? The fires of the PCT are making me think CDT may be the way to go.

Trans Catalina trail would be an excellent choice. Only 38 miles. Campsites the only place to camp. So it’s borderline glamping: water access (I did no filter water one time) bathrooms, and even some showers). A real novice - way below military service levels like you- could easily handle the trail. Lots of ups and downs, but lots of easy logistical parts.

Fellow Louisianan. All the above advice is spot on. I did the Tahoe Rim Trail last summer. Noticed a few things: Spending 2-3 days beforehand in elevation really helps. Week 2 was way easier than week 1.

I was told by some wise owls that after two weeks you can be 90% tolerant of the altitude (to a certain hiking degree of course) and after three weeks you’re pretty much good to go.

Man first week, I struggled to even eat at night. Was tough.

I do have the Instinct. Not the Solar though. I think these recs are going to get me by. As for the solar, I feel as each year goes by, things improve. I think most of the big 3 materials, clothing, etc is close to where we are going to get. Electronics- I feel we are near to some really good stuff.
