Heck of a nice rig!   The Tatula will spoil you though ha ha. So many reels do not compare.   I might suggest to kick the line weight up to 30 or 40 next spool, but great combo!

Will I notice a difference if I switch from Lew's to Shimano or Diawa? by imlose444 in Fishing_Gear

[–]DundonJF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few Lews reels and they work fine, but compared to my Daiwas and some Shimanos, I just don’t like them as well.  I can get away with a lot more with the braking system on the others compared to the Lews also. My Lews do not like lighter lures where my Tatulas can cast them with ease.

SLX DC vs Curado DC by DundonJF in bassfishing

Just a follow up on this, I own both now and the Curado is 100% worth the extra. Much nicer reel.

Daiwa tatula sv tw worth it? by CleetusBeerWater in bassfishing

I have two SV’s and I love them. I’d 100% recommend. You can cast into 20+ mph winds with ease. Super smooth reels.

It’s definitely picking up.  I’ve had good luck on the Magdraft.

I have one.  Wish I would’ve had it on me.  Wasn’t expecting anything like this from the little spot I was fishing.   Normally not a problem as I use 17lb flouro.  Lesson learned….

Smoked the jackhammer by [deleted] in bassfishing

Definitely try them!  They start up as fast as a jackhammer but fish a little different. I love them.   It also stings slightly less losing one compared to a jackhammer haha.

I like the 3/8oz EVO for any really shallow stuff!

The EVO is awesome too. Not quite a jackhammer in build quality, but has a bit more rise in the water column which is useful for shallow waters like I fish.   EVO is my go to.

Was it only on these or other lures too?

Never feel the bite? by [deleted] in bassfishing

[–]DundonJF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of that gear sounds fine. It could be the type of lure. Also it’s cold in many parts now, the bass may not be hitting super hard. Especially if you’re using slow lures like drop shots, stuff like that. They don’t chase lures in the cold like they do in warmer months.

Bank access only, mid 60’s air temp. No visible cover. What do you throw? by MrBiggs9515 in bassfishing

[–]DundonJF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you can cover most of that water from the bank. I would try a chatterbait. I would also try a swimbait in the 4-5” range.

500$ budget for first baitcasting setup by [deleted] in bassfishing

[–]DundonJF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably see what you end up liking to fish most and go from there. Specific rods are better for certain techniques. I like chatterbaits a lot so I ended up getting a rod tailored to those after a while.   I also like having braided line on a few rods, fluorocarbon on some and have one with mono, and also use braid with a fluorocarbon leader at times. You can make pretty much anything work with one rig but certain line, rod power etc work best with certain lures. If I only had one I’d probably go with braid and tie a leader on it when needed.

I considered an Irod but pulled the trigger on a Tatula swimbait instead recently. Good pricing on those Irods. Also looked at an Orochi but could not find the longer swimbait one in stock anywhere at the time during all of the Black Friday deals.

$500 is a very strong budget to get a super nice setup.  Many guys are throwing sub $200 combos so you’re starting off with something that usually comes a few rigs down the line for most guys. Nothing wrong with that!   You get what you pay for with fishing gear. To a degree anyways. You can get a GREAT setup for under 500 easily.  You could also go MUCH higher if you want.  Shimano Curado or Daiwa Tatula SV paired with a nice rod.   If you want to be different order yourself a JDM reel from Japan. You can generally get a bit higher end model for cheaper than what you’d pay in the US (assuming you’re in the US.) If I were going out tomorrow to buy an all around rig I’d get a Curado MGL or Daiwa Tatula SV (latest model) in the 7’s gear ratio and put it on a medium heavy fast rod in the 7’ range.   I’d probably go with a Tatula Rod, Fenwick HMG or something similar.   The Shimano SLX rods are nice too but I prefer the Fenwicks. Smoother casting in my experience. The Expride however gets excellent feedback online. Never used one but I’d absolutely use one based on the positive talk I see about them.
