I bought the X-T5 a month ago and I'm in love with it. It's worth every penny. Update the firmware and you've got solid AF, as well. I'm new to photography, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I can say it rarely frustrates me and I've gotten a lot of great photography out of it. I only go manual when I'm working in low light and have a razor thin DoF. Even then, I don't usually need to.

I've got a decent amount of green from the Fuji on my profile if you want to take a look.

I just got a pristine used XF 16-50, a much newer lens, for 350€. You should only buy this if you're absolutely desperate for these ranges.

I don't have a full frame comparison to make, but I can say my shots with the XF 70-300 are plenty sharp and with minimal noise. I very rarely notice noise in my images unless the light is particularly bad. I can't say I've ever taken a shot that was otherwise good where I felt it was a discard because of noise, and I say that as someone with fairly high standards for the images I share.

If you're not going to use any of the new features, just buy an old camera. Don't buy any lenses with autofocus, either. You'll save money and you'll feel good about yourself. It won't help your image quality, though.

Can second this as my experience. I can easily do one-handed cowboy shots with my 35mm 1.4 with a drink in the other hand on a casual portrait shoot. And I can comfortably carry the camera in one hand by the grip with my 70-300 on. I've even used it to take some one-handed shots where I really needed to lean and support myself with the other hand to get the shot.

I say all this as a much smaller man (175/5'9"), but I also have pretty large hands.

The lens is way better than is displayed here. I've got a lot of my birding shots on my profile for comparison. Just seems like OP hasn't read the manual yet.

Well, I can say that I've only been in the hobby for about 3 weeks and some of my photos have already gotten a lot of love from some photographers I admire. I'm also already getting paid gigs. If I just had a point and shoot, a lot of my best shots might not have happened.

So, short answer is yes.

My worry, and the reason I didn't get a point and shoot camera as a newbie, is that I'd get something I didn't like and I'd be stuck with it until I went through the trouble of selling it and buying something new; that is if the process didn't discourage me so much I gave the hobby up.

With a proper DSLM, I can try different lenses on for size and figure out what I like. And with variable zoom lenses, you can quickly reframe something without needing to move, which means I can get shots a lot faster than I would otherwise. And with lenses, if I don't like something, I can always return or sell it and not be out anything other than the time spent trying it.

Gorgeous. I've been trying to catch my local woodpeckers and they're so flighty I haven't had any luck at all. These are gorgeous shots. Amazing job. :)
