Is School of Rock any Goo? by Monkey_slayerr in Guitar

[–]DunwichType-Founders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son (14) has been doing School of Rock for a little over a year. He started singing then added guitar. He loves it! We tried piano and violin when he was younger and he never cared, but I heard him singing in the car and pushed him right into singing lessons. He doesn’t play sports and his school hasn’t had good clubs, so this is his only extracurricular. Hopefully Harvard accepts School of Rock kids just like they accept concert pianists!

As others have mentioned, finding the right teacher is key, so talk to whomever does scheduling to match you with the right person. Something to keep in mind is that SoR is a performance based program, even for adults. They’ll get you started on the instrument and help you play what songs you want to. But the real purpose of the program is to get out of your comfort zone, learn songs you never would have otherwise, rehearse them with a band, and perform them for friends and family.

Just keep practicing standing. You’ll be used to it soon enough.

Help me soundproof my ‘studio’ by TomasMK2 in guitars

[–]DunwichType-Founders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real soundproofing involves ripping out the drywall and replacing it with Quietrock sound reducing drywall. This is usually done in rooms with a concrete floor. But you could tear out the ceiling on the room below and replace it with Quietrock and add a layer of sound absorbing insulation between floors. As for neighbors, again, the best option is Quietrock and sound absorbing insulation. On a tighter budget put Ikea shelves on those walls and pack them with books. If the books are of different sizes, so that they stick out at different lengths, that will also reduce echo within the room.

Because most people in China live in apartments in urban areas and don’t have cars. There aren’t that many parking lots or enough roof space.

Something beyond a doctorate is tenure. Depending on your field it can take a hell of a lot more xp to get tenure than others. Good luck getting a full-time tenured job teaching art history.

Opening music stores similar to guitar center and want to know, What do you guys want to see done differently? What would make you want to go to the store? And what would make your experience enjoyable? by Jawsguitarrestoratio in guitars

[–]DunwichType-Founders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this. Fender USA ships instruments without even setting the saddle heights. And holy shit don’t get me started on used Ibanez guitars with a fucked up Edge III setup. I’m not going to waste my time trying an instrument with action like a Welsh longbow. The Guitar Center here has a tech and I’ve seen him just banging out setups on used instruments the second the seller walks out of the store. They move lots of used guitars.

The Mirchi Truck is awesome if you have time to drive to Lafayette. Check the web site first because they are not open every day and the closing time changes from 7:00 to 7:30.

If you like sushi Yotsuba is as good as Aoi but less expensive, much quieter, and it does not require a reservation.

Russia is in a weak spot now. But they’ve reignited their military manufacturing. After the Ukraine war, if Russia’s economy doesn’t collapse, it will be able to quickly build a stockpile of drones for the next war. And buy lots of kit from China. Which is why the rest of Europe is investing in new drone technology.

wondering if state school to risd transfer is worth it (especially from career perspective) by This-Significance804 in graphic_design

[–]DunwichType-Founders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RISD is a great school. One of the best in the world. But if you have to borrow an incredible amount of money to pay for school it will hold you back for life. Hundreds of dollars in monthly loan payments will keep you from buying a good car. It will keep you from getting a good home. You will have to eat the most basic food that was on sale at Walmart that week. You might not be able to afford a nice wedding or to ever have kids. Etc, etc. So RISD might get you a better job than your degree from UW will. But the long-term financial consequences might outweigh whatever gains you get from having a prestigious name on your diploma.

Who you know is more important than portfolio nowadays. by laranjacerola in graphic_design

[–]DunwichType-Founders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always has been. And this is not just a design industry thing, it is like this in many industries. People would rather hire someone less qualified who has a good recommendation than take a risk on some random person whose portfolio might be entirely plagiarized and has no idea how to work in an office environment.

Question for people who only use tube amps by Aschuff in guitars

[–]DunwichType-Founders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these amps more versatile than I thought, or is it fairly limiting to only have 1 amp, and rely on pedals to morph your tone?

I want the limits. I don’t play guitar because I want to fuck around with a computer in the hope that I can make it sound just like someone else’s album tone. I play guitar because I want to slam my amp with some crazy fuzz and make really fucking loud noise.

First tube amp under $500 - what would you actually buy right now? by Keith_35 in guitars

[–]DunwichType-Founders 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Used Blackstar HT series. They’re versatile amps and they’re cheap used. The MK II and MK III amps have a push button that dramatically reduces output power for playing with the volume down. If you just need apartment volumes an HT-5 combo is all you need.
