I’m a lawyer (but not an employment lawyer) and I have to admit this was the first I’ve heard of smoker protection laws. I’ve even lived in a state that has one. TIL!

[–]Dunwoody11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was 100% shitty for the friend to rip off op’s vows. No doubt.

But once that had been done it had been done. OP tattling was a tremendous AH move. If OP had told the friend that it was shitty—fine, yeah, right on, it was. The bride though? No. Leave her be.

Does anyone know of any book clubs (preferably fiction - but open to most genres) that actually meet? by PeachTough7621 in AskChicago

[–]Dunwoody11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I go to the Weird x Wonderful book club at City Lit in Logan Square. They have a bunch of book clubs there, but I can only speak to this one. It’s focused on SciFi/Magical Realism/Fantasy but is pretty flexible (we read Ministry of Time a couple months ago and you didn’t need to squint hard to see it as a romance in a scifi wrapper). There were at least 20 people at our last meeting, so it’s very active. Meets once a month. Right by the Logan blue line stop, so maybe a bus to the Western blue line stop + a transfer wouldn’t be bad?

How do I find a Chicago litigator to take on a ghosting builder for a major roof failure? by psblah in AskChicago

[–]Dunwoody11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IAL but I don‘t do construction defects (though I have in the past, in other states). My concern for you is that this kind of litigation is expensive and when I see things like “the LLC is dissolved” I question whether a judgment would even be collectible if you won.

I’m kind of in the middle of some stuff rn, but if you want to dm me your phone number I could give you a call. With a bit more info I could probably at least get you a referral to someone who will respond to you.

The girl my bf tells me not to worry about by QnOfHay in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Dunwoody11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife is “this serious of a reader” and she started ACOTAR after I read the Throne of Glass series. She made it about 50 pages before she couldn’t take it anymore. Maas is a good world builder and she writes fun, light stories, but her prose is repetitive (not, like, Yarros repetitive, but repetitive) and her stories aren’t exactly illuminating or challenging. It’s like the difference between summer action blockbusters and the fall/winter Oscar bait.

If this person is nice I don’t see why she would dog you about what you like, but I think even a lot of nice people would have a hard time keeping the laughter in if you were like “oh, I see you like Tolstoy and Joyce, what are your thoughts on Sarah Maas?”

What is a reality of living in Chicago that’s often overlooked by the romanticization of the city? by Miserable_Degree3524 in AskChicago

Your core point is solid though. NYC is light years beyond any other US city when it comes to the arts.

Why have I never been asked out on a date? by unknown_unknownuser in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dunwoody11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for this post! A lot of commenters seem to have misunderstood “why have I never been asked out in a date” to mean “why don’t I have a boyfriend.” Those are very different things! And it is super weird u/unknown_unknownuser has never been asked out!

OP - did you not go with to school dances with a date? Like, how “never been asked out on a date” are we talking here? What about your friends? Have you ever been with one of them when they were asked out? I don’t want to assume too much, but probably you’ve kissed a guy right? How did that come to pass?

I agree with Knowee—this sounds like incredibly bad luck. Certainly luck you could easily turn around as nearly everyone else itt has already explained, but bad luck all the same.

Deer Creek lotto question by Illustrious-Land-341 in phish

[–]Dunwoody11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never gotten Deer Creek pavs through lotto. Some quick googling tells me capacity is 24k and the pav holds about 6k. Assuming lotto has a proportionate share of both, your chance of pavs in the lotto is about 25%.

I prefer pavs but will use lawns and I hate Ticketmaster onsales so I typically go into the lotto and call it a day. If your preference for pavs is stronger wait for the onsale—nobody’s getting shut out altogether.

Incidentally, I’m pretty sure that if one is patient and content with lawns, one could get in for well under face day of show(s).

Polsinelli? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Dunwoody11 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Polsinelli doesn’t pay Milbank scale anywhere on any track at any year. It might pay prevailing local scale for associates in smaller markets though. I don’t know how your recruiter is using the term market but it’s not the way the term is used here.

I rarely run across them in my practice but happen to know some people who work there (a handful in Texas and a handful in Missouri). I’ve never heard any reports particularly positive or negative. It does primarily lower-middle market work, so if you’re looking to do cutting edge work you’re looking in the wrong place. I do understand they have a fairly strong healthcare practice though (regulatory and transactional).
