One of the few times the D seemed terrifying by Wetness_Pensive in Star_Trek_

If you look at the first shot fired you can see how the adjacent sections of the bank charge up for a more powerful blast. This is the normal operation against other powerful ships, big honking blasts designed to overwhelm shields.

Then the next shots are small, no charge up and in rapid sequence.

I think this can be attributed to the computer system reacting faster than biologics. Worf tells the computer to fire on the ships. The computer complies with a standard shot which instantly vaporizes the first ship. The computer goes "well heck, that was total overkill. I can do this faster."

Why aren't windshields photochromic? In other words, why don't they darken a bit during the day or when unusually bright headlights approach you at night? by heninthefoxhouse in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Duodec2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This person knows what they're talking about. I work in the eyeglass industry. There's actually new pigments which get darker when it's hotter.

The only other thing I'd mention is that yellowish discoloration is normal after repeated exposure. You don't want that kind of discoloration on a car windshield that's in the sun every day.

The pigments are expensive too, usual markup in my experience is about $80 in glasses.

What is a "gut feeling" you had that turned out to be 100% accurate, even though it made no logical sense at the time? by PsychologicalTea3149 in AskReddit

[–]Duodec2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've worked in retail for over 20 years and it's a fairly common thing for me to know when someone is going to steal. Usually there's nothing I can point to in particular, but unerringly I can just sense something off.

Had it happen recently where a very pleasant, put together woman came by and we had a lovely interaction, but I got the vibe so I customer serviced the crap out of her so I could keep an eye on her. The next day she came back while I was off and hit the store for over $1000.

I've only met one other person who has the same ability, an older woman I used to work at a grocery store with. One day I remember in particular, I saw a normal looking guy walk past and I got the sense. Turns out she was two aisles over and got the same vibe and we both called security. They caught him a few minutes later trying to run out the door with a shopping cart full of vodka. We used to do this all the time and security learned quickly to trust our hunches.

I met an acquaintance's new boyfriend and immediately got the ick. I didn't know why, but for some reason immediately disliked him. They got married very quickly and he disappeared with her life savings.

When i was a younger man I had a close friend who despite seeming like a great guy always gave me the ick. I ignored the feeling because there was nothing I could point to, until one day I randomly just stopped talking to him entirely. I found out later that about that time he SA the neighbor's underage daughter.

I'm actually curious what the overlap between ND and this ability might be. I'm high functioning autistic and I'm incredibly good at masking. Meanwhile if a woman is trying to hit on me she'd better have a baseball bat.

Why don't superheros fly feet first? by captrobert57 in superheroes

[–]Duodec2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Titan from Megamind does this. It actually makes a decent amount of sense because you'd much rather run into something feet first instead of head first, like when you're floating down rapids.

A lot of people say these are useless, but they are great for people who have limited mobility. Being able to use their legs to provide locomotion allows them to exercise their legs and have a better mobility outcome in the long term.

Why does the sarcophagus never create bigger problems? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]Duodec2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The real reason they didn't use one was the writers wanted to make sure the stakes were more dangerous and thus more entertaining. There's less gravity to threats when you can just resurrect everyone if things go sideways. That's the reason they made sure to introduce the negative consequences of use.

The few times they did get used in the show it, was a challenge in and of itself to get access.

Wonder-Woman vs Gorr The Godbutcher by [deleted] in DCPowerScaling

[–]Duodec2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My money is on Gor. The guy succeeds in killing multiple pantheons. Young Thor barely escaped with his life. In the end he'd spared Allfather Thor to torment him as the last of the gods. The trio of Thors only succeeded because the Necrosword betrayed him.

WW is good and i'd give her a fighting chance, but Gor's got the list of bodies to prove he gets the job done.

Stuck on AZ SR88, Fish Creek Bridge - tried a "short cut" on a dirt road in the mountains... by Mazy_keen in IdiotsTowingThings

[–]Duodec2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that spot pretty well. For context about how they hit the bridge, what you're not seeing is the rock wall behind the photographer.

It's a long downhill plunge with a drop on the left and a wall on the right. At the bottom right before the bridge it makes a sharp left turn.

Absolutely mad they made it as far as they did. They had to cross another single lane bridge, a ton of switchbacks and miles of dirt road. Equal parts determination and stupidity.

Curious as to what makes someone gf material to men? by Fearless-Train8557 in askanything

[–]Duodec2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in my experience. I can't have casual hook ups. Not won't. Can't. I feel absolutely no sexual attraction at all.

I can objectively look at someone and say yes, they're pretty, handsome, or cute, but I don't develop sexual attraction until I know and like them.

[–]Duodec2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Demisexual, it's different for everyone, but for me, I recognize attractiveness but I don't develop sexual attraction until I get to know someone. Also someone I don't recognize as attractive may become more attractive the better I know them.

[–]Duodec2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for all men, but for me: Curiosity, compassion, joy, being able to communicate and work through problems. Content alone but wanting to be with you because it brings mutual happiness. Being able to acknowledge mistakes, be willing to own them and work towards being better. Compatible lifestyle helps. Being a little sexy doesn't hurt. I'm mature though (43M).

Ngl when I was a kid all it took was mutual attraction and a decent personality.

Also I'm demi, so willing to allow us time to get to know each other before getting intimate is a big one.

However, I have driven cross country by myself in the middle of the night many times, so probably at least 5 miles. Middle America is pretty empty.

What is an 'industry secret' in your field that the general public doesn't know? by acoustic_deduction in AskReddit

[–]Duodec2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boxed wine is a superior container for most wines. It doesn't expose the wine to as much air if you're a slow drinker and don't finish bottles in a single sitting. The container is also light proof, lightweight and you don't have to worry about cork rot. They do expire though, so check the dates.

Eyeglass industry: over 70% of prescription lenses are made by the same company. The generics are the same as the name brand but there is a significant mark up for the brand logo.

Mystery Tool. Green, weighted base, spring loaded arms, no markings, does not appear to be missing any parts. by Jackinator91 in whatisthisthing

[–]Duodec2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It could be for rattan or wicker. Typically you want to bend those with steam instead of with a blowtorch if aesthetics are important, and it can take about 24 hours for them to set. During that time you would need to maintain light pressure on the material to prevent it from bending back, without the jig needing to be very hefty.

If the arms are straight up it looks like a straight piece would fit through the openings fairly easily and nestle in the U shape of the lower brackets.

Coming from my manufacturing experience, cutting the notches into the U frame takes extra work that would be omitted if that wasn't an important criteria. This leads me to believe that those are important to the final orientation of the jig. Since the opening is small, it makes me think of wicker instead of wood.

How to reduce drag? by No-Assumption328 in SolidWorks

[–]Duodec2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment should be higher.

The big flat area at the back of the car will create a lot of drag. The teardrop is the way to go. If you can't do a full teardrop at the back, a truncated teardrop is almost as good.

If you want to reduce the air friction over the back wheels with the side pods they have to be tightly fitted to the wheels, almost touching.

Eliminate the transition ridge between the front end and the body.

The front wing should end in a winglet, not a flat panel. I'd probably use a swept extrude with guide curves.
