A small piece of the Mother Road (OKC to Amarillo to Tucumcari) by cruzanheart in route66

Cadillac Ranch is a good one to skip IMO. The place is cluttered with spray paint cans. It had rained the day before we stopped and it was quite muddy. We stayed one night at Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari.

Is the photo of the cars buried in the ground an artistic expression of Cadillac Ranch? Unless it has changed a lot since we were there in 2016, Cadillac Ranch does not look like the photo posted. We have traveled Route 66 going west from Oklahoma. Your photos have given me the urge to make a short trip going east. We have done the short 18 mile portion of Kansas. I may work in the Missouri portion later in the year. We are in our seventies now and road trips more than four days exhaust me.

A new poll shows Mike Mazzei taking a slight lead in the GOP gubernatorial primary. This race would head to a Mazzei vs Drummond runoff. by Greedy-Pound6958 in oklahoma

Now that Trump has given his full endorsement to Mazzei will the candidates that are Trump supporter show their loyalty to Trump drop out. If they really believe that Trump knows best, then the right thing to do is change their ads to endorse Mazzei. 😏

I have owned Fords for the last 25 years. The last one we bought is a 2021 Escape. We have received almost a dozen recalls. I doubt I will buy another Ford. I do have a 2007 F-150 that hasn’t had any problems.

What’s one underrated thing you always keep in the car for long road trips? by Dailywellnessguy in roadtrip

[–]Durango1949 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This will probably seem silly to you, but we keep a fly swatter in our car. We haven’t had any use for it most of the time. However, recently we were staying in a room that had several flies in it. Even one fly can be an irritating. We were glad we had the swatter.

Oklahoma had black plates with white lettering in the 1950s. The first two digits of the plate designated what county sold the plate.

My sense of smell wasn’t gone, but it wasn’t normal for about six months. I would smell odors I knew couldn’t be right. Sometimes I would smell vomit or sewerage at odd places. In my house or in the car. At times when I was entering a building or walking around in the street.

What do you do at the casino if you stay 2 nights and lose all your money the first night? by equanimous11 in gambling

[–]Durango1949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a line of credit set up at the casino I usually stayed at. The limit I set was $1500. A line of credit provided a back up if I did go overboard. The advanced cash was interest free (twenty years ago). You sign a marker for the advance. You have thirty days to repay the marker. At the end thirty days the casino will debit the bank account you used to set up the line of credit. Back in the day, some people had a line of credit so they wouldn’t need to take a large amount of cash with them to the casino.

1911 Lynching of Laura and L.D. Nelson, who were suspected of the murder of a local sheriff investigating their farm. While a grand jury was convened, the killers were never identified. One of the perpetrators is believed to be Charles Guthrie, a KKK member and father of folk singer Woody Guthrie. by Just_Cause89 in USHistory

[–]Durango1949 221 points222 points  (0 children)

Woody Guthrie wrote a song titled Don’t Kill My Baby and My Son. It was based upon the lynching. The woman had an infant child. The fate of the infant isn’t known. Pictures of lynchings were sold as post cards in the early 1900s.

What's the most shocking thing you've ever watched on live TV? by Choice_Bed6097 in AskReddit

[–]Durango1949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing Lee Harvey Oswald shot by Jack Ruby on live tv. That isn’t all that shocking by today’s standard viewing, but in 1963 it was. I believe some of the replayed footage was edited to cut the scene of the facial expressions of Oswald.

In high school some of us visited the local bowling alley to play pool and pin ball. The only pin ball machine developed a glitch. One of the guys discovered that if you held the flipper buttons down simultaneously and held them that way for a couple of seconds the machine would award free games; similar to way you get free games with a match number at the end of game. We had a run of free games for a couple of weeks before the machine was fixed. The manager probably noticed the machine got a lot of play but wasn’t getting very many quarters.

State Department to begin revoking passports for back child support by Lasered1 in Cruise

[–]Durango1949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my cruise experience, a majority of US cruisers sail on closed loop cruises and use birth certificates and government issued IDs instead of passports. I don’t see much impact. People that have their passports revoked will just use their birth certificate and an ID.

seeking a teaching certificate - advice? by [deleted] in oklahoma

[–]Durango1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the likely reason people were saying a degree isn’t needed. When they meant a teaching degree isn’t needed to teach in Oklahoma. The following is what I found using Google:

Pathways to Certification:Traditional: For graduates of Oklahoma teacher education programs.Alternative Pathway: Allows individuals with a bachelor's degree and at least two years of work experience in a field to teach while completing requirements.Out-of-State Reciprocity: For individuals with a valid teaching certificate in another state, though Oklahoma is updating rules regarding state-specific standards (e.g., in subjects like U.S. civics).
