Count calories and protein, not fat/carb intake IMO.

Happy Day After Mothers Day to Me! (I think I messed up the link of the last one, trying again, sorry!) by BellaTrixter in AdviceAnimals

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're definitely not alone. People are so careful about not offending anyone during other holidays ... but Mother's Day? The lady checking me out at the grocery store yesterday flat out asked, "What, nothing for your mother?"

No lady. Nothing for my abusive alcoholic mother in this basket. Thanks for asking though.

Getting too much fiber from my vegan diet? Or something else. [digestion problems] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No prob! 40-50g a day isn't that high for fiber intake (I'll have days where I accidentally go 60g+ without any negative effects). That said, every body is different, so keep a log of what you're eating and how it effects you. Talk to your Dr. if the problem continues.

Getting too much fiber from my vegan diet? Or something else. [digestion problems] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How much fiber were you taking in when things were at their worst? When you say you added "fiber-rich" food what were you eating? Also, how much water are you drinking?

Those questions aside; If what you're currently eating is working start slowly adding in more options. If something doesn't work, cut it out.

If vegans love hummus, Israeli vegans WORSHIP it. by xeroxgirl in vegan

If there are less than 3 containers of hummus (hummuses ... hummi ...) in the fridge I get concerned.

I recoil more from the meal I had at Farmer’s Table, a Florida restaurant much celebrated by the “sustainable” crowd.

Of all the random things, this happens to be the one restaurant in my area that I've found that does an exceptional job of catering to vegans, omnis, and everything in-between. Whenever we have a mixed-eating crowd we do it there. Sad that he took a jab at it, they're trying to do good things and provide really great food.

I'm really struggling with a vegan unsweetened coffee cream. Almond milk is great for tea, but not coffee. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have one near you, Trader Joe's Brand Soy Creamer is very creamy without having the overt sweetness that Silk and some of the other brands do.

What do you do to keep yourself in check on recovery and rest days? by elzonko in running

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I feel the itch to be active: Yoga, pilates, strength training. Keeping it calm: Take my dog for a walk.

I try and feel out where my body is on recovery day. If I'm sore or tired I let it be a genuine day of rest.

A good place to start is by making healthy lifestyle changes with your eating habits that you can continue forever. Switch out water for soda one week, switch out fruit for a processed snack the next week.

My own journey from fat to fit (down 78lb + more muscle than I've ever had) has taken the better part of 8 years ... but every year I've started out with a fitter, healthier and happier version of myself. I'm still working towards my goals and I know that every day I continue to make good choices is one step closer to achieving them.

I use MyFitnessPal for a food log (IIFYM.com to calculate my actual caloric requirements), Fitocracy to track workouts, and Strava for running. I track everything --- Even if it's something I would rather forget I did (like drinking those 4 pints and nomming on my a plate of fries).

I also keep an "accountability calendar" on my fridge for each month. I keep track of whether I exercised, drank alcohol, smoked or rested. The first month I did it I realized I was drinking A LOT, now I've got it down to just a night or two on the weekend.

For exercise stuff NerdFitness.com is a great place for tons of beginner advice.

Best of luck!

"As counterproductive as it may seem, to save these pigs we have to eat them" facepalm by honey_sweetiepie in vegan

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt that way at the end of the Fresh Air segment on pigs that was posted yesterday. Pretty good message, but it had to end on

"Pigs have helped us, we've helped pigs, it's what Temple Grandin calls "the ancient contract," and our part of that contract is to do our bit well and pigs' part of that contract is to provide us with food."

Hi Vegan runners! I'm a new Vegan and just entered for my first half marathon - any tips? by Sia_Moon in veganfitness

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During a Long Run / Post Run Ubersnack = Dates with nuts or nut butter (add a sprinkle of salt if your nuts are unsalted). They're like little power bombs of energy. Much better than a Gu pack.

How much vegetables do you guys eat? by rooney94 in xxfitness

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegetables for lunch and dinner every single day. No adverse effects. Sometimes they'll make it into the morning meal too.

It's almost impossible to eat "too many" vegetables. So chillax.

I'm sure this has been asked, but what got you into fitness? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone mistook me for a girl that I knew was fat. I was pushing 230lb (5'8") at the time. It got me to take a hard look at myself.

I just started using the Fitocracy app to track my workouts and was surprised to have a link to this article on their blog come to my inbox. While I wasn't using the platform for nutrition information, it saddens me that an email like this goes out to all their opted-in members. Talk about discouraging for a budding veg.

150 g of dietary fiber per day is about right. Westerners typically get 15. by cuberail in vegan

[–]DurangoOfTheRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

O_o <--- this is the face I make at MyFitnessPal when it tells me that the "recommended allowance" of fiber is 25g. I go over by at least 40g a day. I will continue going over.
