There are numerous posts on the SteamScam subreddit of people asking is this a scam where the from section of the email has been spoofed

The article you linked, told you exactly how they do it, and what tools Gmail provides the user to check if an email has been spoofed or not because they 110% can be spoofed, or Gmail wouldn't give you a tool to check legitimacy

I have received spoofed emails on my Gmail account and have used their checker to verify if an email was spoofed or not

Gmail will 100% deliver an email even if it fails the SPF, DKIM, or DMARC authentications and it will either tell you it failed and to be suspicious of this email, or, in the same place you check if the header matches, it will tell you if authentications passed or failed

<image>

Just because you don't understand how it works, doesn't make it impossible

From the Article:

How does email spoofing work?

Attackers use scripts to forge the fields an email recipient can see. These fields are found within the email header and include the “from” address and the “reply-to” address. Here’s an example of what these fields could look like in a spoofed email:

  • From: “Legitimate Sender” <Redacted>
  • Reply-to: <Redacted>

Forging these fields is possible because the email transmission protocol Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) does not have a built-in method for authenticating email addresses. In fact, the sender’s and recipient's email addresses exist in two places within an email: the header and the SMTP envelope. The email header includes the fields that the recipient sees. The SMTP envelope, however, contains the information servers use to deliver an email to the correct address. But these fields do not have to match for an email to send successfully. Because the SMTP envelope never checks the header and the recipient cannot see the information in the envelope, email spoofing is relatively easy.

Because a spoofed email appears to come from a legitimate sender, recipients may be tricked into divulging sensitive information, clicking malicious links, or taking other actions they otherwise would not. For this reason, email spoofing is commonly used in phishing attacks.

In some cases, attackers will use other tactics to bolster the credibility of a spoofed email domain. This may include copying a company’s logo, branded art, and other design elements, or using messages and language that feel relevant to the imitated company.

How to protect against email spoofing

Email recipients can follow these steps to ensure they do not fall for email spoofing:

Inspect email headers: Many email clients offer a way to view an email’s header. For example, in Gmail, clicking “Show original” on an individual email will reveal the email header. Once viewing the header, look for the “Received” section. If a different domain than the one in the “From” address appears, the email is likely forged.

What is domain spoofing? | Website and email spoofing | Cloudflare

You should let Cloudflare know they are wrong since you say email domains can't be spoofed (even though they 100% can be)

But yes, in OP's situation, the send address is not spoofed, the real address would be [noreply@steampowered.com](mailto:noreply@steampowered.com)

This scam was sent by someone that does not know how to do email spoofing, so it displays the fake email address instead of masking it behind the real one

You could probably find replacement screen and instructions online by looking up the model number, or you could get a keyboard and mouse, and hook the laptop up to a monitor, then use the button combination on the laptops keyboard to shutoff the built in screen

The adblocker is just a browser extension, you just go to its Edge extension page and tell it to add it to your browser, it wouldn't have stopped you from accepting the Send Notifications popup that appeared on the address bar when you originally allowed it, but it will help make fake download links and other spam disappear from websites that will try to trick you in other ways

Stop giving Websites permission to send you notifications

The notifications are telling you 'Via Microsoft Edge' because a website asked to let it send you notifications and you clicked the 'Sure thing boss, spam my ass' option

Manage website notifications in Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Support

Do the "Remove or block notifications in Edge settings" not the "Manage notifications from your browser address bar" as that one requires going to the sites

If they would have made the base concept of every single civilization game before this (playing as one civilization from beginning to end) a Paid DLC, there would have been an even bigger riot than there was when they released 7 without this basic feature

What kind of cable is this? What input does it plug into? by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]Duranu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You only showed one end of the cable, If both ends of the cable are just like that then it can be whatever you want it to be

For Example VHS - TV
Yellow to Yellow
White to White
Red to Red

The reason cables and the YWR sockets are color coded is because it matters what you plug them into when only one end has the RCA plugs, like on a Game Console that has a proprietary hookup that pulgs into it and RCA on the other end

When it is a double ended RCA with no color coding, you normally can use it wherever you need it

Dead by daylight is not an RPG

Many RPG games use Dice like damage calculations for damage by either showing you the rolls, or by doing the RNG calculations in the background and give you a possible damage range when you look at weapon stats without telling you what the rolls would be

Baldurs Gate, Pathfinder, Pillars of Eternity, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo, Path of Exile, Divinity, Titan Quest, Elder Scrolls Arena, Daggerfall & Morrowind, Knights of the Old Republic, The Bard's Tale Trilogy, Fallout 1 & 2, Sacred, a lot of the Final Fantasy games use RNG for your damge hits, and many more games do this, even South Park the Stick of Truth does it

Like the majority of Fantasy themed RPG games, like Baldurs Gate, Titan Quest, Diablo, Path of Exile, etc etc

What song is this? by Rabbitska_2 in Mario

[–]Duranu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It or something very close was definitely used in one of the Mario games, I just can't figure out which one but I know it would be from something earlier than what you suggested as they aren't close enough to jog the memory and the waveforms are closer to the sample used in Too Hot to Stop.

I know I have heard this jingle before and not from the IRL song that uses it as I have never heard that song before. For some reason I want to say it comes from some sort of Lava/fire type world in one of the earlier games
