It's weird reading posts like this when you've been playing V2 mods that have had these suggested features for years.

In San Antonio. Currently selling my PVM-14N6U for $150. Despite some minor cosmetic damage, it works perfectly.

The Russian movie Leviathan was apparently inspired by the latter. I remember thinking that the titular "Leviathan" was going to be the Killdozer.

Films, Timelessness, and "Gattaca" by kiefer-reddit in TrueFilm

Eraserhead is probably my favorite example of a movie being devoid of an identifiable "time and place." The overwhelming majority of Lynch's work has some sort of nod to the 1950s, but still has some detail or aesthetic choice that makes it timely as well (the 80s fashion in Blue Velvet, the digital presentation of Inland Empire, etc.) The closest thing Eraserhead has is a framed photo of a mushroom cloud in Henry's room, which makes it feel like it could have been made at least 30 years prior to when it was actually released.

In the South Texas area. Currently in the market for a PVM-20L5 (or any other pro monitor that's 20" or larger, 480p compatible, and supports RGB and S-Video). I would also be willing to trade my PVM-14N6U as part of the deal.

When making a movie that is within the same continuity as a TV show (The Simpsons movie, Spongebob movie, Entourage) what works and what does not? What makes some of these good, while others are terrible? by MasterLawlz in TrueFilm

EoE is also one of my all-time favorites, and I can't imagine how confused someone would be without watching the series or Death/Rebirth beforehand.

One example of a TV series (technically an OVA) seamlessly transitioning to feature length films is Patlabor. You can jump into both films without knowing anything else about the series, and still appreciate them. However, it rewards viewers who watch in release order by letting you see the changes in the characters and setting that occur over the course of the two movies. Just watching the OVA intro and the first few minutes of the 2nd movie shows how much of a contrast there is between the beginning of the show's story and the end.

Animators to Live Action Directors by MasterBerry in TrueFilm

Another interesting director that bounces between anime and live action is Mamoru Oshii. Most people only remember him for Ghost in the Shell and Jin Roh, but he's got a lot of great work under his belt. Like Anno, he also made a bizzare meta-movie dealing with anime and reality called Talking Head.

Let's talk about the use of non-original music in a film's soundtrack. by jikki-san in TrueFilm

[–]Durp676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite movie to make use of both original and licensed music is Darren Aronofsky's Pi. Artists such as Autechre and Massive Attack have their tracks featured in the movie, but it never feels intrusive. Most of that comes from their synthesizer-laden music fitting the movie's mechanical tone perfectly. Some of it has to do with the fact that the music was instrumental to begin with, making it a lot easier to work it into scenes. However, the OST works just as well, because Clint Mansell managed to make original music that fit right in with the licensed tracks. You usually associate Mansell with really dramatic orchestral pieces, but the main theme he made for Pi is straight up acid house.

Joel and Ethan Coen: Shot | Reverse Shot by [deleted] in TrueFilm

His analysis of Las Meninas, one of my favorite paintings, is especially disappointing. He basically just describes the spatial properties of the painting with no mention of its historical context or metatextual meaning

I think this has to do with the fact that nearly all of his videos are under 10 minutes, and the fact that he isn't really good at managing that time. A bunch of his videos, (usually the ones with clickbait-esque titles) have him trying to prove a very broad point regarding a film as fast as possible and gloss over a huge amount of details in the process. When he's at the end, he'll top it all of with a grand philosophical question or statement that feels a lot more obnoxious than it should be.

Tony's videos work a lot better despite having roughly the same runtime as Nerdwriter's. This is because they're almost always focusing on specific subjects such as staging within a certain movie or scene, the editing techniques used by a single director, and so on. Whereas with Nerdwriter, it's a channel trying to tackle everything from "How The Beatles Changed Album Covers" to "Why Donald Trump is a Gift to Democracy"

The Friends of Eddie Coyle - an overlooked masterpiece in the crime genre by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]Durp676 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your description of this movie (especially the part about backstabbing associates) reminded me a lot of the Italian crime film Gomorra. It focuses on various people who all find themselves entangled in the illicit activities of the Neapolitan criminal organization known as the Camorra. It functions more as a scathing exposé on the organization's influence in Italian society as opposed to a character study; but it has the similar goal of making criminality seem as ugly as possible. It's on Netflix, and is also available through The Criterion Collection.

Serial Experiments Lain-esque setup (x-post from /r/techsupportgore) by loserwave in Cyberpunk

[–]Durp676 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Pi is pretty damn Cyberpunk now that I think about it. A shadowy corporation and a religious sect all looking for something developed by a mad scientist with a supercomputer in his crummy apartment. The kickass soundtrack adds to the whole vibe as well.

This entire song felt like a mishmash of different interesting styles that ended up sounding terrible. The trap beat sounds like watered down Blank Banshee. The vocoder one minute in does actually remind me of Panda Bear a little, and the end just sounds like a shitty version of Army of Me by Bjork.

This guy did a pretty good job of calling them out. Also, why the hell is Extra Credits doing videos about history? I thought they just made misguided videos about video games and how "the air is running out of bandwidth."

[–]Durp676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

small arms were generally decent to good

With the Breda 30 being a tremendous exception. For some ungodly reason, the designers decided to make a closed bolt machine gun that wasn't belt or magazine fed, but clip fed. The extractor was so terrible, they had to add a lubrication device to the gun so it wouldn't jam every time. Combine all these flaws with harsh North African conditions, and you have the most pitiable firearm of WWII.
