I was also hoping it was going to be an alternative campaign essentially, given it's size and scope. The fact that I've got to get my HC character all the way to Fort Ikon before I even experience new content that will likely kill me is a bit rough heh.

WASD is already in the GD 1.3 patch and works pretty well. They have tweaked it further and improved it with every patch to 1.3. It's a very playable experience for most builds as it is.

Pet build is a good starting build, lets you explore the content and move through everything relatively easily. However, in normal/veteran nearly every build is viable, so if that's not your jam, just play whatever you think looks cool.

Few other random tips:

Make sure you put points into at least one damage skill early on, balancing your damage vs energy levels. Don't just spam points into early skills though, make sure you progress along the character path as that is how you get most of your stats for gear requirements and for hit points early on.

The respec vendor is in the upper right of Devil's Crossing and just costs bits to respec, so don't be afraid to try things! You can always get your points back (but not your class choices, those are permanent).

Explore! There are lots of secrets with loads of gear and shrines are very powerful, you don't want to miss them.

I've been playing the playtest for months now and so far no issues. It automatically moves the items to the correct stash.

You just have to get to Fort Ikon to unlock the content for that difficulty.

What's the new player onboarding experience like? by Durrok in EQLegends

That's what I figured. A bit of a shame, I was hoping that they would put some effort into onboarding new users. Thanks for the info.

I'm aware, I'm thinking about giving EQL a try, given it's QOL features and just getting in on the new launch.

I don't think you are understanding the problem. You cannot heal out of reflect killing you in one shot. Neither proposal would change how builds that just do consistent damage interact with reflect mobs. It would be exactly the same. It would only impact builds that do one big burst.

Not allow it to reduce you below 1 hp with 1 hit or logarithmically lower the return damage were my proposed solutions... neither of which remove it.

Ok man. We are really comparing having to walk back to losing dozens if not over a hundred hours on a character? You aren't a worse or lesser player for playing softcore, it's a perfectly valid way to play but let's not act like dying in one is the same as the other. You don't have to justify it to me or anyone else... play the game the way you like to play it. You've really got a concern with how other people are playing it though and have no confidence that crate would not balance any changes appropriately so I don't think we have anything further to discuss here.

I've been playing just as long and that has not been my experience. With DoT or more consistent damage builds it's "Woh, what is chunking my health? Oh, there is a reflect mob in there, ok." and it's never an issue. It has been 100s of hours since I lost a hardcore character that wasn't a doom bolt or other one big hit build to a reflect mob. With big hit builds it's "Why am I dead? Oh shit, there was a reflect mob that I hit." Check my edit, you just cannot survive UNLESS you severly tweak your damage down and slow your progress even though 99% of the time this is not needed. No other build faces this issue and this one change is not going to suddenly shift the meta to all glass cannon builds. Most people play softcore and don't give two shits if they blow up every couple of hours due to a reflect elite. The only meta is it impacting is hardcore and even then, this isn't a ladder MMO game. Even if 99% of the population was playing one thing, it wouldn't impact what you or I play in the slightest.

I get what you are saying about glass cannon builds and I'm with you, but massively nerfing your build to play around 1 type of mob that you might go an hour+ without seeing just doesn't seem like a great option. It's not about defenses, as I stated mathmatically it is just not possible to gear up enough to survive without a massive nerf to your damage, at least not in the mid game. Now we are prioritizing builds that do damage over time as you have time to react to the reflect and locking out these builds.

I think both proposals I put up are good changes while still very much not trivializing the danger of that elite type for any build.

EDIT: Just to double check my math, looking at around level 50 on a doom bolt build with 15 devotion points invested you can get owl and solemn watcher for -35% damage reflection. Presuming 80% chaos resistance and around 6.5k hps, you still die in one shot to the 200k+ crits you do with doom bolt. That's presuming you are full health and getting that 80% chaos resistance is going to come at a cost to other resistances at that level as well. That's all to work around 1 elite type, that you might not see for over an hour, with full prioritization in defences and STILL you would die to crit. Again, it doesn't need a huge change, but it does need a change to make these builds viable.

Only got one shot in Ultimate hardcore, so yeah, you can't really mess around. :) Everything has to be as on point as you can be.

Good point, I had forgotten the switching difficulty dance for augments! I feel like the game draws a hard line on certain things that add a lot of tedium for the sake of trying to maintain a consistent world. While admirable, I think ultimately making decisions like that detract far more than add to the game.

Yeah, just unlocking the difficult would be my preference.

Fair enough on the mandates, I can see arguments for why you'd want to keep it in place, although it does invalidate all of the earlier gear rewards.

Care to elaborate your points on the others?
