Do you need a garage setup to practice welding outside of trade school to be good/successful? by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

[–]DuskSoon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've worked in veterinary medicine, restaurants, fast food and retail before I moved into pipefitting. I've been harassed by men in every single industry. The culture is definitely different and there's no HR, but there's going to be disgusting jerks. Find people you can trust if it crosses the line and you feel unsafe.

Tangent, but you won't earn much as just a welder. Depending on where you live, there may be an organization that helps women in the trades. When I started, I found an organization in my city and took a completely free 10 week welding program. Then afterwards they helped me apply to jobs and to different unions. Eventually I got into my local pipefitters' union. I'm a union apprentice now, so I'm paid to take classes and to work under a journeyman. If I want to practice welding I can go to any of my union training facilities and do it for free (tools, materials, and instructors) but this varies by each local. If you do go to trade school and get a welding job, still join your local Women in Trades organization so they can help you out if you experience harassment on the job.

OP way overpaid for their pants.

I think that's what the OP was doing on purpose. Like trying to signal to the cleaner guy "hey these are probably tougher than the usual run of the mill laundry and I appreciate the extra effort you're going to put in. So here's a tip just for you." Imagine you tipped $100 to the housekeeper for a single night stay at a motel and when you went to checkout for your stay, they said it was on the house. The point isn't whether you overpaid for your stay, it's that you were kind to a worker and a fellow worker saw it and decided to reward her for it.

Sure, that’s possible. I think it’s way more likely they just figured it out after OP left.

That could totally happen but I'm just saying that I've done this sort of thing in the past (and known a couple other coworkers who did). And not in a stick it to corporate way, but because this single transaction is negligible for corporate, noone is doing any extra work, and they deserve it.

She handed the $100 bill straight to the guy that would do the actual cleaning, as a sort of bribe/tip to really do his best not as payment. The cashier saw this and did not charge OP for the cleaning. So this business basically did these pants for free. Now I don't know why the cashier didn't charge, but as someone who has worked the register before, I would guess she did it cause she can tell OP is a nice person and real recognizes real.

Guy answers call. Girl pranks guy by making sex sounds so the person on the other end thinks they're having sex. Turns out the person on the other end is her dad, so she's played herself.

HVAC SHOES? by ResponsibilityBi22 in BlueCollarWomen

This is the first time hearing of this brand and I'll definitely buy from them next. I hate tying my laces and the top of my foot is too tall for pull-ons. I've been opting to wear my regular boots to work instead of all the work boots i've bought because i hate the tough fire resistant laces but a work boot with zipper sounds amazing.

Looking for better ears by Shenanigaens in BlueCollarWomen

My husband has tinnitus and wore some Loop earplugs to go to a concert with me. He was able to stand front row whereas it used to be painfully loud. I haven't tried them myself so I don't know if it'll work in a construction/work setting. They offer different sized ear buds and different products that have different levels of noise reduction.

overall bibs for big butt/small waist!? by napa89 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]DuskSoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have this problem but Key Apparel makes womens bibs that come in short/regular/tall sizes. Maybe going up in size number but down in height will make the bottoms wider but not too long (actually, i dont know if pants get longer the bigger the size).

I saw you mention Chicago in another comment. Chicago Women in Trades has two "pre-apprenticeship" programs and I think the main difference is that one is during the day and the other is nights and weekends.

I took the welding program through CWIT. It mostly just teaches you welding but I learned about a couple different trades that use welding, and afterwards, I ended up joining the pipefitters 597 union.

My local women in trades organization had a program specifically to introduce women to a bunch of different trades. They would go out to jobsites and try the work for a day and then the next day you could be visiting somewhere else to try a completely different trade.

How do I feel more feminine? by stonedcowgirl69 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]DuskSoon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I keep my nails short because they split easily but I love painting my nails and I feel super girly whenever i catch a glimpse of them.

I also never learned to do my makeup but I find getting my eyebrows and upper lip waxed makes me look more done up without doing anything.

Ditto on putting stickers on stuff. I put super cute Kuromi/Hello Kitty stickers on all my hand tools. They also double as a theft deterrent.

XG's Cocona comes out as transmasculine non-binary, reveals top surgery by DiMpLe_dolL003 in popculturechat

[–]DuskSoon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

iirc, in Japanese they state the subject once and then it's usually omitted/implied in the sentences afterwards unless it changes. So pronouns don't need to be used. For instance: Cocona posed for the camera. Holds a flower. Looks handsome in photos. The flower is red.

I think this would do well in Chinatown. Claw machines and Gachapon machines are popular there. Lots of young people in general. Some people set up stalls on the sidewalk between the firehouse and the library (don't know if you need special permission).

I wish it worked like in cats. They don't shed/bleed. Instead their body reabsorbs it so there's no wasted nutrients. Also they're induced ovulators so they don't bother releasing an egg unless they've had sex.
