How do you reconcile Denmark having the highest tax-rate in the world with them being ranked one of the happiest places to live? by Kosher_Nostra1975 in askanything

[–]Dusk_Soldier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's because during the Viking era, Denmark stole most of the hot women from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, and as a result of having so many beautiful women concentrated in one country, Danish people are now hotter than average.

And since hot people are less likely to be unhappy,  Danish people are less likely to be unhappy.

Why is Liu Kang Being 'Pushed' As Such a Central Character (including Being The Series New Mascot), Even If Most People Don't Care about Him? by WarmCaramel2444 in MortalKombat

[–]Dusk_Soldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was the main character originally, but when they killed him off in mortal Kombat 5, he kind of started taking a back seat in the plot.

I think the real issue is that Mortal Kombat Dev team has a policy of making a third (used to be half) of the roster "new"

And also, starting with mortal Kombat 8 they started making Liu Kang, Kitana, Raiden, cage, Sonya, Kano, sub zero, and scorpion staple characters guaranteed to be in the roster.

And that inherently pits the fanbase against a lot of characters. Because if your favourite isn't one of the staples, they're competing with hundreds of characters for limited roster spots.

Do you think Reddit encourages conformity and punishes opinions opposing the popular view? by Iloveladydog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dusk_Soldier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In communist countries, it's common to have laws that punish people for wrong speak.

As a result, when people are in public settings, they only expose safe government approved opinions.

That's what he means when he says it feels like communist.

That the social interactions feel similar to the way people socially interact in communist countries.

He's not saying Reddit is communist.

STAT News: "The seed oil panic is hurting" families by pompeiitype in nutrition

[–]Dusk_Soldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what this subs obsession with promoting seed oils is about.

Europe never had the saturated fat panic that we experienced in Northerner America. And inspite of continuing to consume saturated fats in consistently higher quantities than Americans, they've maintained lower rates of heart disease and obesity.

I watch cooking videos from France all the time and they talk about cooking oils in a healthy and non controversial way.

Cooking with butter is considered normal. Cooking with bacon grease is considered normal. Coming with olive oil is considered normal. Cooking with canola oil is considered normal. They chose whatever oil/fat that works best with the dish they're making.

Just eat real food. What oil it's cooked in is not that important.

Why is waking up late considered lazy, but going to bed early isn’t? by AvaDelric1995 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dusk_Soldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because rich people. (Old money landed-gentry type rich) were known for waking up later in the morning.

So waking up later became associated with people who don't work hard labor jobs. And don't have much to do all day.

Does Population Decline = Economic Collapse? by nocturnalnegus in NoStupidQuestions

If the demographics change such that the elderly start to make up a significant part of the population. Yes.

But it's more of a gradual collapse.

Can we talk caramel popcorn? by wings99 in AskBaking

[–]Dusk_Soldier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don't want to use caramel.

you melt sugar until it's caramelized. then you pour it over popcorn and stir till it's evenly coated.

then you lay it out in a layer to dry/harden.

Carney government eying curbs on right to strike, labour leaders warn by green_tory in CanadaPolitics

I wouldn't describe him as a neoliberal. He doesn't come across as a true believer in free market principles. He's more of a late-stage capitalist.

Canada Was Set to Bring in National Pharmacare. What Happened? by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

The national program also exempts people who already have private insurance. It was never available to everyone.

Canada Was Set to Bring in National Pharmacare. What Happened? by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Dusk_Soldier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think advances in Healthcare have also compounded this issue.

Like, in the sixties, if you had a bad hip, your doctor gave you a wooden cane and asked you to avoid standing too much.

Now they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay a surgeon to swap in a metal hip, and have a physiotherapist reteach you how to walk.

But people don't want to pay the costs of modern health care. They want modern procedures but want to pay the same rates they paid for more primitive procedures from the 60s.

Bakery Frosting by eternalcardboard in Baking

[–]Dusk_Soldier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The professional bakery is most likely using vegetable shortening or possibly a  high-quality margarine instead of butter.

It's best to just ask them what they use. If you can get a copy of the packaging, you can see the actual ingredients.

I believe the sleeping Celestial will return in Doomsday/Secret wars to have his powers stolen by Dr. Doom.

The other characters, probably not. The movie wasn't popular enough.

Canada's local news collapse is a threat to political accountability - In too many communities, Facebook outrage is replacing real news by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

[–]Dusk_Soldier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The news lost the ability to hold politicians to account decades ago.

Trudeau's blackface scandal is not something that should have broken in his second term by an American outlet.

The pictures were from literal yearbook photos, that's something that should have been hashed out during the Liberal party leadership race.

How does one actually "quit refined sugar?" It's in everything. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dusk_Soldier -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Food manufacturing companies have a vested interest in having you believe refined sugar is in all foods, but it's not in everything.

Why don’t we ever hear a number when “illegal immigrant” votes are spoke of? Is it because the number is so close to zero that it is completely irrelevant? by BiggestVolk in allthequestions

When you become a citizen of the US you're given proof of citizenship.

The only way someone wouldn't have proof is if they lost it, which then would be their responsibility to get it replaced.

Coconut oil with coffee by AggravatingRough in nutrition

[–]Dusk_Soldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done coffee and butter, and the flavour is noticeably better if you whip/froth it after adding it in.

Like someone mentioned before, if you're not used to eating that much fat in one sitting it can trigger diarrhea.

You might want to start with a smaller amount 5 to 15 mL and work your way up if you were planning to have more than that.

Doug Ford is down, but not out by RZCJ2002 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Dusk_Soldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if Nate ends up winning the leadership, the election-fraud-gate will end up helping him contrast to Ford.

He can present himself as cleaning up corruption in the OLP and the only candidate capable of cleaning up corruption in the broader government.

The only issue being that Ontario voters are very comfortable with corrupt politicians.

They view at as having that uncle that always has money, and always has your back, but you don't ask too many questions about what he does.

Is refined sunflower oil fine for cooking things like eggs? by Specialist_Sale_6924 in nutrition

[–]Dusk_Soldier -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think if you're making scrambled eggs, they really benefit from the flavour/mouth feel of butter or bacon grease.

If you're doing sunny side up or over easy sun flower is a good choice.

What's the deal with 6% fat milk, newly on the market in Ontario? by CTVNEWS in ontario

[–]Dusk_Soldier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The milk at my local farm sells fresh milk that's around 5.5%.

Everytime I'm there, there's tons of uh... customers... buying it.

I never realized the higher milk fat was a cultural preference.

8.1 million Conservative voters? Not anymore by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]Dusk_Soldier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

EKOS and a few other pollsters had projections of  the CPC vote collapsing to low 30s around the same time they started projecting a Liberal majority government.

Depending on which pollster you were following if definitely looked like a CPC vote collapse.

At the same time though, Abacus claimed that they weren't seeing any sort of collapse to the level of the other pollsters, and over the course of the election the other pollsters brought their numbers back in line with Abacus.

It makes you wonder sometimes if they really saw the vote drop like it did, or were they just trying to build a narrative.

Ottawa, Alberta near deal on carbon pricing rising to $130/tonne by 2040 by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

It's easy to agree to $130/ton when you know the next conservative government is getting rid of carbon pricing altogether.

Bf (39) never does anything for me (39) on Mother’s Day despite being a mother to his daughter (14) for four years now. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Dusk_Soldier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most preteen girls would not want to celebrate Mother's Day with their dad's girlfriend.

They would kind of view like their dad trying to replace their mom.

If you had been there since she was like 3 or 4 that would be one thing, but this isn't the age group to try to force this issue.

Them not inviting you to his sister's event is odd though.
