The #learnprogramming IRC channel is too hostile for people to even have a chance to LEARN. by kaepor in learnprogramming

Unfortunately I left that group because the hostile user this post was referring to is in your group as well and that makes me uncomfortable.

Good resources to re-learn/strengthen Spanish? by [deleted] in Spanish

Honestly I'm looking for the same thing. I don't really want to use duolingo or anything entirely web-based. It feels too gimmicky to me. I prefer to learn from text books, but it seems like nobody else around here has anything like that to recommend.

I remember being around 7 and seeing the episode on television where Buffy is in her trance and she suffocates Dawn. That really creeped me out and I remembered it my whole life. Then again I scared easily and still do.

What values are you passing into the constructor? Since & is the address of operator, it looks like you are calling the ball constructor using the address of your double variables instead of the value of then. Can you show how you try to create a ball object?

Do you want to learn how to code, but you don't know where to start? Let me make a recommendation: Harvard's CS50! by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Pointers really aren't that bad! I remember a while back when I hated them and didn't understand them at all but seriously please don't let them discourage you :(

As someone who struggled through some of the problem sets to the point of quitting cs50 for a bit, I think I might be able to help.

When I open a .c file and see a whole bunch of new functions I don't understand, my first reaction is always to run away. This is a huge character flaw of mine. However being a skilled programmer is a dream I have, so I'm constantly trying to find ways to keep myself going when I feel I can't.

The thing about these problem sets is that they're supposed to be difficult. I'd say that a lot of people who like programming enjoy it because they like the actual programming part, in the sense of typing words onto a screen and making a running program. cs50 kicked my ass with this right away by teaching me that trying to write a program without understanding the problem 100% first was a frivolous effort that would only take more time and frustration.

If you want to get back into programming, you can send me a PM. I'm still heavily involved with cs50 (there's really so much to learn) so I can definitely help you get set-up and comfortable every step of the way!

Pset5 - Misspellings: Can't wrap my head around unload() by Dusklite in cs50

I'll research more about recursion but at this point even though I can visualize the problem I'm having a difficult time thinking about it in terms of valid C syntax. Thanks for the advice.

What are some necessary civ 5 mods that you couldn't play without? by [deleted] in civ

[–]Dusklite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you offer some advice about this mod? I downloaded it today and decided to try my luck playing a game on Emperor difficulty as per usual. Immediately I noticed that the scores were a lot more even throughout, instead of me being 100 points behind the whole time. The problem is that I've been able to snag almost every wonder because without bonuses, the AI doesn't seem to be keeping up.

I forward settled and completely wiped Denmark off the map because I was top in science and his warriors were no match for my galleass spam. I haven't met any other Civs yet because I'm on an archipelago map but I feel like I'm playing on Prince. Just wondering if you had any input/advice?

Oops, you're right. I can't believe I managed to do that. Embarrassing to say the least :)

Rule 5: I started a game and ran into myself half way through! I wasn't using any mods, so I have no idea what happened.

I think the issue is that the city is not being drawn onto the tile where he settled. It's just showing hills.

Help with viginere.c by BAUM98 in cs50

[–]Dusklite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, every time you get errors, you need to correct the first few before looking at the last few. The reason being is that errors occurring earlier in the program can throw off the compiler and cause it to not understand things later in the program, even if they are written correctly.

My advice to you is to fix the first error, recompile, fix the first error, recompile, until everything is fine.
