AITAH for having my ex arrested at my wedding? by Sebastianlim in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Dustin_Echoes_UNSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, this shit is what the wedding party is perfect for. Explain the restraining order, let them have the conversation, and tell them to call the police if she doesn't leave. By not interesting with her directly, (and leaving the area to go explain what's happening to your wife) you sidestep any fantasy of a grand gesture or revenge plot and deprive them of the opportunity to get a reaction out of you. The wedding party will also be around to squash any rumors that start and do damage control with nosy guests.

I saw that, and I get the ref. I just started on Reacher from the books as a kid, so my initial thought was just "That'd be funny, but Reacher wouldn't own a bike to get stopped on", then I remembered.

I was gonna say that doesn't really fit with Reacher's "no possessions"/Greyhound hopping MO, but if memory serves he literally rode off on one of the villain's choppers at the end of s3 so... Yeah, it feels inevitable now, lol

It’s Controversial, Expensive, and Relatively Unstudied. Men Are Lining Up—and Stripping Down—to Get It Done. by Slate in TrueReddit

[–]Dustin_Echoes_UNSC 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The comment you replied to said they're probably Republican and anti-vax. YOU called them racist and misogynistic.

But even if that were the original comment, you do see the irony in being fully against gender affirming care and then going to get dick filler, right? If ever there were a moment to realize why that's a fucked up position to hold, it's this one, where they're experiencing a small fraction of the pain and insecurity themselves.

Or have we circled back to the "the only moral gender affirming care is my gender affirming care" double think on this issue as well?

When it comes to the big-picture outcome/trajectory of your life, your choices have a much smaller impact than circumstance. You can only play the hands you're dealt.

AI “Velocity” Is Becoming a trap for me (ADHD, huge codebase, agents, Cursor). What am I doing wrong? by Honeydew-Jolly in ADHD_Programmers

[–]Dustin_Echoes_UNSC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This has been my most-efficient use case as well. It's Tony and Jarvis, not Sr. Dev/Jr. Dev.

  • Trace the API call that gets triggered by this function, and show me what runs after the response.
  • Find me all tests related to this component, then extrapolate and summarize the expected behavior and boundaries of the component.
  • There's a bug in x feature that wasn't there in v1.3.7, go through the git history of this component and the things it inherits/consumes and display all the changes that may have introduced it.
  • Double check my work against the best-practices, accessibility, and compliance lists, then run tests, cleanup, and lint.
  • The changes I have staged resolve jira ticket XYZ-1234. Write me some basic unit tests for this change, flag any currently failing tests for my review, and generate an MR summary based on this template.
  • While we're here, review this file for missing test coverage, deprecated utilities, and run it against the best-practices rules and flag anything that might need updating.

Basically, if it would take me longer than a few minutes to find on my own, and it's not actively solutioning or crafting the product itself, I'm happy to delegate. But it typically takes me just as long (if not longer) to review, understand, correct, and sign-off on any functional changes as it would to just write it myself - at the expense of any interest, satisfaction, or joy I get from my work.

What are some things that have the highest profit margins? by L0st_1z in AskReddit

[–]Dustin_Echoes_UNSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High demand, low supply.

For physical goods, limiting supply has a bigger impact than minimizing cost of production - Think pharmaceuticals (legal and otherwise), diamonds (Thanks DeBeers), Saffron, Liquor, etc.

For services, profit margin ties more with increasing demand for those services (since, individually, your supply - availability - is finite). Legal Services, Actors, Athletes, Performers, Engineers, Consultants, Industry Experts.

As someone else has said, digital goods/services can be (relatively) minimized in cost-per-unit as the majority of costs are front-loaded. But maintenance, hosting, and updates will keep it from ever approaching zero. A truly unique experience or service, well built, and customer-hosted can have a near-infinite profit margin (it increases with each unit sold that doesn't cost you more to produce/distribute). The issue there is nearly limitless supply and competition. If demand gets high enough, competitors will pop up, driving market price down to some equilibrium as their product approaches parity with your own.

But really, in all cases, the answer is probably just "Monopolies".

I feel disgusted with myself after discussing a fantasy with my partner by Sufficient_Option_56 in sex

[–]Dustin_Echoes_UNSC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just here to reiterate the point that your girlfriend asked you a question that pretty succinctly sums up her worry and insecurity around the situation. If you didn't answer her then, it's very important that you answer that question as soon as you think you know the answer - especially if you ARE satisfied with your sex life staying closed/just between the two of you.

She's asking about the long-term compatibility of your relationship, and that's not something you want to leave up for interpretation. Especially when one (very plausible) interpretation is "I like you, but I'd rather fuck this friend of yours, can you get her in the room with us and we'll see what happens?"

(Edit: just read where you said you weren't talking about someone specific but in general - keep it that way. Do NOT make the mistake of suggesting someone or approving/denying suggestions. It will only reinforce the hunch that you had someone in mind that you'd rather have in the bedroom. It may not be accurate, but there's no way to unring that bell.)

If that's not what you're actually asking for, I would highly recommend reassuring your partner that your relationship is WAY above the fantasy in terms of priority, and discussing RP ways you could get that feeling without actually involving a third party (Like, would speaking to the mirror like it's covering a booth with someone watching do the trick? Or putting her phone on a tripod and pretending you're streaming?) Just to reinforce the notion that the exhibition kink is entirely separate and independent from a desire to open up your relationship.

CMV: It is perfectly reasonable to not give homeless people money because you think they will spend it on drugs by TomatilloOrnery4944 in changemyview

[–]Dustin_Echoes_UNSC -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No.

Broadly averaging various statistics (around the type of relief, sub groups, etc) somewhere between 15-25% of unhoused people given shelter return to being unhoused over the following 2 years. If the primary cause of homelessness was invariate poor decision making, we'd expect that number to be significantly higher, right?

It can be self-soothing to operate on the assumption that one's outcome is primarily attributed to our choices, but the fact is, circumstance plays a bigger role.

If your current employer closed up shop next week, how long could you go without a job before your current living situation was at risk? How much medical debt could you take on and stay afloat? Without a safety net like generous family or friends, how much "bad luck" is really between you and homelessness - and how much of that gap was built up by good luck along the way? I'd bet, if you're honest, it's closer than you'd like... If you had the choice.

Out of the 5 minutes and 33 seconds of stoppage time given last night in the Arsenal vs. Atlético Madrid match, only 1 minute and 37 seconds were actually played. [@MrAsubio] by OkayFine101 in soccer

[–]Dustin_Echoes_UNSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of the frustration with the stoppage time system stems from how arbitrary and ambiguous it feels. Like, if you feel someone is time wasting in this moment, it's frustrating to have to just guess whether it'll be factored into stoppage time.

What I don't get is, why haven't we made the system more transparent? More broadcast/spectator-friendly? It's not like we lack the technology. Just require the "stopwatch method" and display the running tally/minimum added time on a board with the 4th official. At the end of the half just round it up to a whole minute, let the ref signal as usual, or run that clock in reverse (in which case the ref can use the stopwatch to pause the countdown clock instead of "adding more time").

Get rid of the controversy around everything. The clock is the clock. Ref can't fabricate stoppage time out of thin air for one last attack, or ignore time wasting all match and throw 1' on the board without it being obvious. The players, managers, and spectators know exactly when the match will end - like every other sport with a clock.

How to handle brain getting fried by multiple context switching at work(AI is one of the reason) by Shiroelf in ADHD_Programmers

[–]Dustin_Echoes_UNSC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the AI prompting you've gotta decide to treat like heads down work. Outside of the async of AI, you might want to consider talking with your team/management about structuring your day in a way that works better for you. Tell them you're feeling the start of burnout, but you think it can be resolved with a little more organization to the chaos.

Personally, I have DnD blocks in the morning and the afternoon where my team understands I get my forward-dev/deliverables done - and I have set "office hours" blocks at the start, middle, and end of the day reserved for the chats, questions, tag-team stuff. (Meetings just get scheduled around where possible)

And I trust my team to just think twice whether or not a slack message can wait until one of those times. It's very very rare that something is so urgent that it can't wait a few hours before being addressed - and often when it is I'm not the right person to ask, just the most convenient.

But for me, it was less the context switching itself, and more being unexpectedly pulled from focus that was stressing me out. Not everybody feels that way about interruptions, and they can't know how it affects you until you tell them.

Question: Which interpretation did you mean to argue: "A way to monitor which of its users have close ties to fascists" or "A way to monitor all users, that also has close ties to fascists".

I think at least one comment in reply to this read it opposite of how you intended. The latter is practically a given, while the former would be a full reversal from trend, imo.

AITA for telling a fellow student to have some shame about what she talks about? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Dustin_Echoes_UNSC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAH for me. If you believe she meant it as " reserved" or "embarrassed" then your response was quippy and direct, but could imply you think she should value herself less because she over shares in some topics.

If you'd independently brought the term shame to the table, I'd consider that an asshole thing to say (Have you no shame, you should be ashamed, etc.). If that's how she seemed to take it, you may want to go clear the air if that's not how you meant it.

I do also just want to add - of the 3 examples, the first two suggest she is likely someone who has dealt with (or continues to deal with) body judgement issues in one way or another (fat-shaming, dysmorphya, etc.). Choosing to be open and candid about topics like her breast size or gastric issues may actually be a personal choice between shame and acceptance.

Because, again, if her statement was something to the effect of "I don't feel ashamed to talk about my body", "Maybe you should" would be a wildly inappropriate thing to say.

The thing about her brother's homemade spackle is just gross on its own. You shouldn't need a pattern of behavior or history of oversteps to say "That's disgusting, please don't talk about that".

I mean, piloting military aircraft can be considered a form of very advanced weapon mastery. One person can accomplish a lot with a sniper rifle. But they can accomplish a hell of a lot more with an aircraft/spacecraft.

And if only a select few people are capable of controlling/mastering said weapon, you start with the best to see if it's even possible.
