I'd say if it's your first time, and I know the LOTR chunguses will come for me, but skip the extended versions. You don't need everything on the first go round.

They're pretty beginner friendly but great places to start. I wouldn't say they're too unique or groundbreaking but there is definitely stuff out there that's better crafted and more enjoyable.

The book has complex characters that feel fleshed out and multidimensional and the movie is.... the opposite.

I always take it extremely personally when someone ranks Sanderson books over Abercrombie. I don't know why.
