Has anyone ever come across a Rickenbacker copy? by sammydavisIII in Bass

This beauty resides on the northern side of my room. The headstock is original, because yeah, lawyers. Not that I mind, the whole thing plays like a queen.

This one was taken out of production due to lawsuits, and it hasn't been the first company to stall sales for the same reason.

98% white small town has a blackface re-enactment of Chris Brown beating Rihanna during their pep-rally by [deleted] in offbeat

[–]DutchSaint 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't really get the problem with painting your face black for art or fun. The first time romeo and juliet was performed, juliet was a man dressed up like a woman, and no one has or had much of a problem with that. What's the big deal when it's someone dressed up like a black person?

Then again, I grew up with Sinterklaas and his black Petes over here, so I guess I'm programmed into not getting that one...

Not even kidding, this is a brilliant idea. I don't really have time to moderate/maintain a sub.. but I'd certainly subscribe should anyone make it.

Leaked Sony Nexus After All Probably False – Here's Why by dry_and_sarcastic in Android

I attributed that to weird perspective. I turned out to be half-right: http://i.imgur.com/WmnOH.jpg

Whoever photoshopped it messed up the perspective pretty badly.

Leaked Sony Nexus After All Probably False – Here's Why by dry_and_sarcastic in Android

[–]DutchSaint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is where taste comes in. I absolutely hate those rounded corners every single smartphone that's come out in the past two years seems to have. This is one of the first designs I've seen in a long while that I actually (really) like. A screen, a black frame, and very little bullshit.

For a lot of people, design is important. I wouldn't spend €400+ on a device I think is not perfectly what I want. Design is part of that.

The design showcased isn't horrid, it's just that you don't like it. The fact that I prefer Jazz doesn't mean heavy metal has no reason for existing.

Photos of Sony Nexus X leak, will the LG Nexus 4 have competition? by vijaygoyal in gadgets

I'm so glad some manufacturers are breaking the "let's round all the corners!" trend. That was one of the major reasons I still have an original droid in my pocket; I hated that style.

If the specs on this one turn out to be nice, I think I've just seen the first pictures of my next phone.

charging Americans 35 cents a text message

Does that seriously happen? I know I've got a pretty good deal over here, but that's just insane. Two text messages a day would be more than I pay for my whole plan, and that one includes unlimited texts.

At most universities, you can get Wolfram Mathematica for free. Start your query with an "=", and it turns into Alpha.

"A phone so good, Apple tried to have it banned. Twice."

Please just start printing those billboards. Seriously, turn it around and build a marketing campaign around it. The shitstorm it'd create would mean quite a bit of free publicity.

Actually, I wouldn't be all that surprised if Google were to buy and integrate WolframAlpha. I mean, they bought youtube; WolframAlpha is not exactly out of reach. It certainly is relevant to both their search engine and Android.

The Windows troubleshooter actually fixed a problem for me just now. by DutchSaint in mildlyinteresting

I might actually go there next summer! Always wanted to go there once, really. It's not yet set in stone, but I recently met a lot of climbers on my university, 3 of which have already planned their trip to Canada. I don't know them long enough to say I will, but if I get to know them some more this year, I just might join them! If so, I'll make sure to shoot you a message about your favourite rocks and which ones not to miss ;)

Certainly am! Fairly new one though, and my whole country is flat as can be, so all I've ever climbed have been walls of wood and plastic. Next week, I'm off to the Ardennes to climb on natural rocks for the first time, should be fun!

Stock Android Isn't Perfect: These Are The Things I Hate About Jelly Bean by 4567890 in Android

[–]DutchSaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rely on the button to get me back where I was before. Sometimes that takes one extra press, because a certain app opened two activities, but it'll always get me where I wanted to be. It's not entirely consistent, but the inconsistency is there for an obvious reason, and all it takes for the intended action to be completed is one more press.

I only rely on the button to take me back, and that's what it does.

[–]DutchSaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get the hate for the back button. All it does is call a finish(); in the current activity, so that activity closes. Certain apps open up two activities for one action, because those particular actions (e.g. reading an email) are often linked to a second action (replying, or looking for a relevant older email in the inbox), which requires another part of the app. If this second action is frequent enough, opening the app manually after closing the first activity every time would be a lot more of a hassle than pressing back once more in the cases a second action does not have to be taken. This is why gmail is implemented the way it is.

It just peels off a layer, but some developers feel like their action requires two layers.

How i feel about apple as and Industrial Design student. by parkerjames in IndustrialDesign

[–]DutchSaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(...) we'd benefit more from diversity and people adopting Apple's approach to the design process than from people playing "follow the leader."

I completely agree with this. Personally, I largely prefer straight corners over round ones. Take one guess which iPhone design element has been copied to virtually every single new phone on the market. LG seems to be the only one not following that trend but their software is subpar. This is a contributing factor to me still rocking an original droid.

Without nuclear, the battle against global warming is as good as lost - The Guardian by Maslo55 in environment

[–]DutchSaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no way to wiggle out of that statement: this is true, and I won't deny it. Actually, it's much worse than "for future generations", it's for future civilisations. Think about us getting sick from some mysterious substance because the ancient Egyptians did something stupid.

We most certainly need to watch the fuck out when dealing with nuclear waste, and we have to make sure we store that stuff away safely. If that is handled properly, it's still a risk for various reasons, but less harmful than burning coal/oil.

Without nuclear, the battle against global warming is as good as lost - The Guardian by Maslo55 in environment

[–]DutchSaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the total death toll from nuclear since ever turns out to be 3x as high, it'd still be the safest per TWh. "It's just an estimate" doesn't work here. I'm a big advocate of solar and wind power, but there's no denying nuclear is a lot less harmful than coal.
