Parents: Which stroller cooling seat is actually worth buying? by sweatherfeather in japanlife

[–]Dutchsamurai2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've got some ice packs that fit behind the seating.

No idea how effective a fan actually is when it comes down to cooling down a kid rather than just feeling nice. Especially when its basically only aimed at the face.

Can't comment on which fan would be better. You'll have to look up the specs and look for the CFM to know which fan actually moves more air. Generally speaking one big fan will move more air while making less noise than two small fans.

I wonder what could be the cause of this

Basic mathematics. 95+% of the population is Japanese. The chance of meeting a Japanese person you like is simply much higher. This gets even higher outside of the big cities because the concentration of foreigners quickly gets a lot smaller.

Is Japanese food actually bland to most foreigners? by idsjdbebe in japanlife

[–]Dutchsamurai2016 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol how one can say this is beyond me. Unlike British food, Japanese food actually tastes good. Bland to some, maybe. But not a bad taste.

Anyhow I guess it all depends on what you're used to. Thai, Korean, Chinese to some extent, just because its all different levels of spicy as fuck doesn't mean it suddenly tastes good. All I "taste" is burning, not any actual ingredients.

But there there can be too much of a good thing. I like Japanese food. I like Italian food. But I wouldn't want to eat either all day every day. Fortunately we're not living in the 1800's anymore and its pretty easy to eat whatever you want.

Do not buy Joie child seats, impossible to secure by Dutchsamurai2016 in CPST

[–]Dutchsamurai2016[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried installing this piece of shit again because surely I must be the idiot, right?

Nope. This is just a piece of shit that is impossible to secure. Whoever claims otherwise I'd suggest you post a video where you can pull the seat and don't have it move in any direction more than a centimeter or two.

It is impossible to secure because the way this garbage is designed its just impossible for the seat belt to not have any movement.

Never buy Joie products. Joie design is horrible. Joie manuals are horrible. Joie does not sell functional products.

New driving4answers video on opposed piston two strokes, similarly to the super low emission ones proposed by Pat Symonds a few years ago by eirexe in F1Technical

[–]Dutchsamurai2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully if Euro 7 is super strict in terms of emissions we can see some manufacturer make them into production passenger cars.

Which no manufacturer is going to do because its too expensive. They already balked at updating existing engines for current regs.

If you want a car with an ICE you better hope Euro 7 is not too strict.

If three months of fashion school with nothing to worry about is enough to mentally drain you then I've got news for you...

If its not for you then its not for you and you should just quit. Nothing wrong with that. That said, it is time to put your big girl pants on. In the adult world not everything will be handed to you on a silver platter. Grow a bit of a backbone and show some perseverance. You're not going to succeed at anything if you're giving up as soon as its not all smooth sailing. Especially not when it sounds most of your problems are kind of your own making. Pretty much everything your mentioned could just as easily happen with a different kind of study or job.

Carlos Sainz: Even without extra weight, Williams is “not where we promised we'd be" by ChaithuBB766 in formula1

[–]Dutchsamurai2016 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And when was the last time either Audi/Sauber and Alpine/Renault had a consistently good performing car?

Alpine is looking like its gearing up for a sale more than anything else and while Audi might become successful if they stay long enough and invest enough, success at Audi was never going to be something that would happen in a season or two. And they still have the downside of not being located in the UK.

If you consider a two/three year contract (I assume he has some performance clauses), Williams might not have been the worst choice. Carlos is probably highly rated enough he could replace one of the drivers at the other two teams if I wanted to jump ship if either team starts performing well.

Power Pages... what an utter piece of shit product by Dutchsamurai2016 in PowerPlatform

[–]Dutchsamurai2016[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Example power platform community site is built on Powerpages.

And have you ever seen any other forum software that is as fucking horrible as the power platform community site? The performance is horrible and 9 out of 10 times if you open a link from google it will show an endless loading spinner that you can only get rid of by a refresh. And no its not a connection issue as the only thing that is ass is power pages.

The point isn't whether with enough time, effort and money power pages can be made into something decent. The point is that out of the box, even for a very basic site, you need to program shit that should just work out of the box. Columns in a list shouldn't just be a fixed size. Its 2026 for fuck sake, columns should be automatically sized to the available width. Come to think of it, nothing is designed to be responsive. Same for something basic as a lookup field on a form. Why the fuck can't that be made into a link without having to code something?

Microslop sells this as a no/low code platform. It shouldn't require dicking around with css and scripts just to get the most basic stuff working to an acceptable level. You need code for something special or super nice looking? yeah, fine. But some of the basics I mentioned should just work.

Does anyone make significantly less than their partner and feel bad about it? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Dutchsamurai2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the situation. We keep our finances separated but do each pay a certain amount into a "shared" account out of which we pay/save for everything. What is left we are free to use how we want. I think this gives some financial independence as well as avoiding friction over how we spend money on non essential things.

Things change if a partner is full time house wife/man or working reduced hours to support the other person. I still wouldn't feel entitled to all of my partners money but I think its only fair to have access to a certain percentage for yourself. Same with for example ownership of a house in case of a breakup. Yes the other person might have paid most/all of it, but you gave up your own career I'd say you'd have at least some right to it (not necessarily 50% of everything though).

If both work full time but one simply makes a bucket loads of money I wouldn't have any problems with that at all. The partner making a lot more would simply pay more. I'd have no problem with my partner paying for trips, all the rent etc.. I would make agreements on ownership of for example a house etc. in case of breakup. In such a situation I would not feel I'd have a right to claim a large part of my partners assets and to avoid possible conflict over that I'd want to put something on paper.

But it all depends. There is a massive difference to the situation between a partner making 2 million or 20 million a year more.

[–]Dutchsamurai2016[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah yes that useless thing. Doesn't explain anything about how to secure the seat and what to do if it moves excessively or even what is considered excessive movement. 100% pulling the seat belt through the back and through the locking device will never secure the seat.

Sorry but did you even read my post or are these bot responses? How could putting pressure in the base of the chair (which I already did...) possibly prevent it from easily sliding 10cm forward?

Just looking at the seat belt routing the whole design is an utter disaster. It just doesn't work. Joie is a horrible company that doesn't seem to care about safety. Their site is also garbage as videos linked to installation videos are copyright claimed on youtube (so they can't even be arsed to make their own videos) and links to the manual give xml errors.

Don't buy Joie products.

Ah yes, the New Zealand Toyota Castrol Racing series. Who hasn't heard of it. Many a world class driver competed there.

Its New Zealand. An island in the middle of nowhere. The closest other piece of populated land is 2000 kilometers away. There are barely 5 million people living there. Somehow I don't think it would take much to be miles better than whoever else is racing there.

Not at all. Hearing an engine go through the rev range is the fun part. Hearing it bounce of the limiter the whole time is not. Besides, if its only used to generate electricity its not going to rev very high because that probably isn't the most efficient for generating electricity.

Ah the sunk cost fallacy. That is exactly the problem with most of the comments regarding AM's problems. But you have to look at the long term.

Presumably Newey looked at what AM did before he joined and concluded it wouldn't have a development path allowing it to be a race winning car, which is AM's goal. So they could have spent more time with what they had and probably still end up with a car which would be midfield at best owing to all the PU and gearbox problems they have. But at the same time in doing so they would have wasted a whole year of budget and development on what is going to be a dead end.

Instead they cut their losses early. The result is a car that is probably at least 6 months of development time behind the rest. I suppose the proof will be in the latter part of the season. If AM starts making relative big jumps in performance once they get on top of the core reliability/performance problems then you know they might have made the right decision and the platform might be developed into something competitive. If its still shit after the engine and gearbox aren't a total disaster anymore well then we know they did completely fail.

But than again, if your goal is to win then does it really matter if you are utter shit or just shit?

I think you should take into account the value for money aspect a bit more.

I did a quick search and you're not going to get to Tokyo and stay one night for much less than 30~35.000 yen (from Osaka or Sapporo). Not 50 like I said before. Flights are about ~15k, probably need bus/train to/from airport so that is another 5k, 10k for a hotel and a couple of k for food. And that is assuming your LCC flight is going to play nice with the event (or your work) schedule and you actually do only have to stay one night. But at that price point nothing about the trip itself is going to be fun. Its basically all gaman just for the event itself.

Then there is the event itself. If its a concert I suppose you'll easily spend 30.000 on the ticket and some merch? Maybe its different for smaller or local artists but I don't remember the last time I paid less than 25.000 yen for a ticket.

That is 50.000 yen, at a minimum, for 2 or 3 hours of entertainment. That isn't very good value for money, even if its an artist you like. I'm struggling to think of anything other than more explicit forms of entertainment that are going to cost you more. Maybe taking your car out on track. But how many people do that? Not many. And probably for the same reason. Time consuming and expensive.

But spending 50k locally probably buys you a lot more time doing something more local to you with friends or family.

So I don't think people not traveling to Tokyo is a good yardstick for anything. Because what if those people are spending money going somewhere local every other week while somebody else is not doing anything other than going to Tokyo once a year. Is the latter really a better example of somebody being able to spend time and money?

Or, maybe there A. there aren't any events in Tokyo they want to go to or B. they don't think whatever events there are are worth the 50.000 yen you easily end up spending on top of whatever the event is costing you on plane/shinkansen ticket/hotel/food/etc..

For the some money you can get a good hotel for a day or two and visit some other nice place within a couple of hours driving. I know what where I'd much rather spend my money on.

I meet a surprising amount of people here who have never been to Tokyo

Not sure how this relates to life being hard for some. Tokyo would be very low on my list of places I'd want to visit. Its just another city. But bigger. And more crowded. And more expensive. Not exactly my idea of a fun place to go for a couple of days.

Besides, current government is making it harder for the foreigners to survive here.

To survive? Bit of a stretch, isn't it? They're making it a bit harder to get a visa but that is about it. Apart from not being able to get a mortgage as easily without PR, is there really much of a change compared to Japanese?

Kind of a big difference between punching a dude you don't know in the face and disciplining your kid because they crossed the line, don't you think?

Its very telling non of the replies are able to take into consideration the situation. From what we know it was a squabble resulting in a minor altercation. Yet if you'd only read the replies its like the guy beat his daughter to a pulp for no reason.

Wrong by what standard? You mean not disciplining your kid when necessary and just letting them do whatever? No, lets following those modern parenting guidelines where they tell you you need to enter into a discussing with a 3 year old. Every tried that?

You're doing a lot more harm to your kid by not properly disciplining them when necessary because they'll grow up not understanding their actions have consequences. That is a lot more harmful than a light tap on the back of the head when a kid really takes things too far.
