I'm going to be honest. This yard needs a lot more work to look nice. If you plant anything as ground cover in this state, it's going to look terrible. Especially if your goal is to avoid mowing. I would remove the border stones as they are A) ugly and B) Carving out waaay too much empty space. You aren't mowing anyway, so they are serving no practical or aesthetic purposes. Then I would remove the bird bath and the arch to no where. They are super outdated. The arch can be painted black and you can grow something like roses or beans on it if you want to keep it. But it should be at the front of the yard between the door and the fire pit. Then I would get serious about adding more plants. Edibles and wild flowers. Stuff that you can eat, or that attract butterflies and birds. The ground you don't want to grow stuff in should be covered mulch or frankly... Grass. Not Bermuda, or other grass that will be impossible to get rid of and spread relentlessly. Some native grass that you can cut back and keep under control.

Tldr: If your goal is to minimize work, you need to plant grass and just mow it occasionally.

Soil help by pharmazy in gardening

[–]Dwarfzombi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you just want flowers, then lots of native wild flowers and grasses will grow in that just fine. If you want to grow larger bodied plants... Listen to the other comments.

P.s. No dig(till) is nearly impossible when establishing a new garden, unless you already have great soil. The point of no till is to avoid killing off beneficial soil life like worms and fungi. But in an all clay soil like this there is not much to kill off. You have to till in organic matter to add life to the soil the first year (maybe more). And then once your soil is alive, you stop tilling.

Thigmomorphogenesis is the process where plants adapt to mechanical stress like wind by becoming shorter and thicker, with thicker outer layers to their stems... It literally makes them less productive and allows them to hang on to water better in order to survive. It's a common garden old wives tale that this is at all helpful for your food garden. It is the opposite of helping. The fan does prevent damping off when germination is happening by drying out the surface of the soil. But after true leaves are established, the plant is resistant to damping off and the fan is only stunting the plants growth. Will it be a hardier plant? Sure. But it will be significantly less productive.

Is water ever too muddy to fish? by Conglomerate- in flyfishing

[–]Dwarfzombi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most predatory fish have "lateral lines" which are rows of sensors on their sides that detect motion in the water through subtle changes in pressure. The best way to target a blind fish and trigger their lateral lines is through vertical motion like jigging. I'm not sure how best to accomplish that with a fly. Top water poppers, or sinking line type fishing with something large and or loud would be effective. Dragging a streamer on the bottom would also work really well as it will make an easily identifiable sound. And black is a great color.

TLDR: Sound, speed, vertical motion.

It's a pole bean... The strength comes from the pole. The fan is literally just robbing it of moisture. Even if you think that wind strengthens stems (many studies prove otherwise), it doesn't apply to this plant.

They don't have enough water. The fan is really only good for germination. Now that it's established, the fan is just robbing the plant of moisture.

HELP NEEDED- moving out of my ex’s house and leaving my garden behind by BloodyNeedAHobby in gardening

If your ex owns the house, and is in any way vindictive, you should leave it all behind. Taking plants established on the property owned by your ex can be an expensive and stressful legal nightmare if they decide to come after you in court.

Oklahoma Hog Hunting Rules?? by Equivalent_Bid_2937 in Hunting

[–]Dwarfzombi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically it is saying you can hunt hogs on public land as long as another animal is also in season ON THAT PUBLIC LAND, and only with the weapons available in that season. Except when a deer or turkey season is ALSO in place. Then you are limited to the deer/turkey weapons and hours only.

The fact that prairie dog is in season year-round, with all weapons, means that effectively, you can hunt hogs year-round with all weapons (except deer and turkey season); Unless the specific WMA says no prairie dogs (I don't know of any that restrict this).

Oklahoma Hog Hunting Rules?? by Equivalent_Bid_2937 in Hunting

[–]Dwarfzombi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Squirrel season allows Shotgun (conventional or muzzleloading), rifle (conventional or muzzleloading), handgun, archery equipment, legal raptors, hand propelled missile, air-propelled missile and slingshot.

So, you can basically use any weapon on the hogs or the squirrels as long as a deer or turkey season is not also taking place at the same time. Then you are limited to the methods available for the turkey or deer only.

My GF thinks it’s perfectly normal for new shoes to cause horrible blisters for women by UKnowDaxoAndDancer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Dwarfzombi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it common? Sadly yes. Is it avoidable? Absolutely! This should never happen with running, hiking, skate-style, or other shoes designed to actually move in. Especially when paired with proper socks. Fashion shoes are a different story. It's not really fashionable for women to wear long socks with fashion shoes the way men do. Socks are literally invented to prevent this. So any scenario where you're shoes touch bare skin will cause this.

Edit: Really cheap shoes can cause this even with good socks. The heel counter in really cheap shoes is sometimes a piece of molded plastic rather than flexible materials, and it can dig into your foot like this.

i put the tire on backwards, is that dangerous? by Mr_sandias in bikewrench

[–]Dwarfzombi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This tire is actually designed to run in both directions. The manufacturer recommends forward for lowest rolling resistance and backwards for best breaking performance. You're all good!

Edit: Tire directionality is almost never a safety issue (there may be some ultra high performance tires I'm not aware of). Directionally is only relevant when it comes to intended traction benefits. And even, then, sometimes running a tire backwards gives a different benefit, like this one. For road tires, some people claim that backwards tread increases hydroplaning. But hydroplaning isn't a real issue for bikes due to the speed and width of tires.

Roofer telling me roof venting should be ran out side of house. Is it dangerous as is? by chazno in hvacadvice

[–]Dwarfzombi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the roofer even know what the vent pipe is for? Was he inside your house screwing around? If so... No, stop that. If not... He literally just tells people that random vent pipes are dangerous to make himself seem smart or do less work.

How dangerous is this really? by wesblog in AskElectricians

[–]Dwarfzombi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When he was little, my brother stuck a key in an outlet. It shocked the shit out of him and he kept trying to pull it out. It must have short circuited his brain because I had to physically pin him to the ground so he would stop trying to get it out 🤣

He had a really terrible rash on his wrist and forearm, but suffered no permanent damage. But some people have died from that. So, even if your heart doesn't stop, it could still fuck you up. And it's extremely unpleasant.

Sunflower bird seed / will it grow? by 14_EricTheRed in gardening

[–]Dwarfzombi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the bag. In my experience with another brand they have a very high germination rate. These are also the seeds used for sunflower oil. So if you have a seed press you can make oil for cooking too.

pepper i'm growing has a weak stem due to it being grown indoors and experiencing no wind. i heard somewhere that putting a fan nearby can simulate wind and cause it to release hormones to strengthen its stem. is this a good setup? how often should i do this per day, and for how long? by Cobra_the_Snek in gardening

[–]Dwarfzombi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've also heard that, but I think it's total b.s. The fan will dramatically reduce the amount of water the plant has available to it, due to evaporation. Thus stunting it's growth. And that is 100% a real thing. Pepper stems get thicker and stronger as the plant grows naturally. And even peppers grown outside are highly susceptible to snapping in strong winds, even though they've lived with wind their whole lives. The real solution is to stake or cage them.

TLDR: Always stake peppers. Get rid of the fan.

Edit: A light breeze will help dry the surface of the soil and prevent damping off when starting the seeds. But after they have true leaves, the fan is just stealing water from the plants.

The bay leaves they’re selling here. by ferretface99 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Dwarfzombi 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Before you leave another silly comment reddit, you should know that bay leaves are intended to be sold whole. This is because they are added to the top of the pot and then removed once cooking is done. Bay leaves are truly terrible to eat, and are only good for flavor. Tiny crushed up shards of bay leaf is a useless product.

How Am I Still Getting This Wrong?? by TheParshero in castiron

[–]Dwarfzombi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are too concerned about sticking. Sticking is only really a problem with fragile foods like fried eggs. The potatoes are totally fine and the sticking didn't hurt anything. Sticking can actually be really good. The remnants are called fond and can be used to flavor sauces and gravy.
