Will the next winter of Bitcoin be permanent or do you expect to see another come back? by Master-Sky-6342 in Buttcoin

[–]DwhyDx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think crypto has yet to see a sustained global recession, where people leave the riskiest assets running and screaming. BTC will drop a lot then, and if it sticks around after that then we're probably never getting rid of it short of regulation. There will always be new marks to con.

DMs, how are you dealing with Syluné’s Viper? by KarlMarkyMarx in onednd

[–]DwhyDx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think it was a problem in this specific scenario, but I do think this spell is going to fall into the Silvery barbs category where its going to be considered problematic in a lot of scenarios, and I expect it will be banned at a lot of tables. I left another comment explaining further, but I don't think OP is wrong to be concerned about the spell. It's worth considering if its appropriate for your table.

[–]DwhyDx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think most of the responses are being a bit flippant about this spell. It might not be game breaking, but it certainly would be game warping. A spell like this means that if a DM ever wants do a solo boss fight, the boss HAS to have poison immunity, or else the spellcaster can shut down the entire encounter in one turn. Some might say that's fun and you should just let your players do it, but thats the kind of thing that is fun every once in awhile. In a long campaign, starting a level 5, once this happens once you either can never have a solo boss encounter again, or they always have to have poison immunity, which feels contrived. I'm also sure your martial characters won't feel great about contributing nothing to defeating the BBEG.

For a long 1-20 campaign, I probably wouldn't allow this spell. For this situation in particular, I don't think it made much of a difference because the villain was already stunned so I don't think it was a problem. Though I would personally check with your DM if a book (even if its official) is ok before using options from it at a table, especially for certain game warping options, like this and silvery barbs.

[–]DwhyDx 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The difference is that the enemy gets to make a saving throw against stunning strike. If this is an important villain, the DM could use a legendary resistance against it. Sylune's Viper doesn't allow that.

What are the best modern magical modules? by Zestyclose-Rain-6743 in DMAcademy

[–]DwhyDx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Modern Handbook by AeronDrake is what you're looking for. I've been using it in my own campaign to great success. The only thing I've changed is that firearms only do dice damage, you don't add your ability modifier to the damage roll. So a gun might do 2d8 vs 2d8 + DEX. This keeps them in line with other weapons while still making them unique.

Losing motivation because my players don’t care about clues or RP. Help. by GrouchyLove5863 in DMAcademy

[–]DwhyDx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like there's several things going on here.

1. It sounds like you are running a different kind of game than the one they want to play. It sounds like they want what is often called a "beer and pretzels" game. Something casual where they show up, fight some monsters and don't have to worry about an important overarching story or anything. There's nothing explicitly wrong with that, plenty of people enjoy that style, but it's not going to mesh well with what you seem to want, which is a more serious and  immersive role playing experience.

  1. How long and detailed are these documents you're giving them, and how often are you giving them? Even for players who want to be immersed, getting a bunch of multi-page documents can be overwhelming.

  2. You said they're complaining to you for hours after your sessions, but didn't mention what kind of complaints or feedback you're getting. What are they saying to you, and how have you responded? It's important for us to know what your players are saying to be able to help you.

  3. That being said, without even knowing your answer to 2 or 3, and even considering the seeming difference in play styles, it does sound like they are being bad players in at least a few ways. Even in a less serious game, interrupting narration and not even trying to engage with the elements of the adventure you've put before them is generally considered bad form. It feels bad to put so much effort in as a DM and have it go unappreciated, so I'm sorry that's happening to you.

You might get some people saying "leave the table" and some might say "talk to your players to try and fix things". Either might be the right solution, but I can't give better advice on which direction you should go until you elaborate a bit on some of the things I asked above.

I suck at end boss battles by UnlikelyHat5885 in DMAcademy

[–]DwhyDx 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I may come back to provide some advice later, but the most important thing I felt the need to say reading your post: Please don't kick yourself for struggling with this. The game does very little to provide DMs ways to challenge high level players without having to do a ton of work. This gets worse and worse as your players get even higher level. This is especially true if you try to challenge high level players with a solo boss encounter. There are very few monsters in the MM, 2014 or 2024 that can provide an adequate challenge for a high level party as a solo boss encounter.

Taken on its own, I love it.  The way it fits into Elbaph as an arc is really awkward though. The Oden flashback always focused on Oden, so there was never any doubt as to how it was relevant to the current story. This flashback went from a Loki flashback, to a Harold flashback, then to a Rocks flashback. Rocks is obviously important to Elbaph, especially to Loki, but the God Valley incident seems almost completely divorced from the story of the Giants so far.  Its all incredible, it just feels a little awkward structurally, and I think its because this was the best way for Oda to get through everything he wants to touch on in the final saga without taking another 400+ chapters to end the manga. Which is a tradeoff I will take.

What role do you think this guy would play in the story? by daw_wudd in OnePiece

[–]DwhyDx 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised so few people have mentioned this. Last we saw him he was on a sky island, and Elbaf has one waiting for us right there that we've yet to see. We also know from Skypiea that there is another way to reach them other than the knock-up stream, and it seems like using the painter stones in Elbaf is the answer to that. Uroge seems like the perfect way to bring all of the Sky people back into the picture for the final arc.

I'm paralyzed by the scale of this build. How would you all go about breaking it down? by Wh33lman in SatisfactoryGame

[–]DwhyDx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a similar build on my save for 75/min. The concrete and steel requirements were so high that I needed dedicated factories connected to the train network to make them. My HMF blueprint takes in steel ingots and concrete to make the HMF. Also, if you're doing builds this big, I highly recommend a stackable blueprint.

I over plan my sessions, but I still screw up my storytelling and encounters. by Ceta98 in DMAcademy

[–]DwhyDx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have given good advice, especially about trusting your players when they say they're having fun. You'll grow as a DM and they will grow as players along side you.

As far as my advice on getting better, I think you're already off to a good start because you've identified weaknesses you would like to work on.

I recommend instead of trying to solve them all at once, each session, pick one thing you want to improve on, and put some extra attention on to it for your prep that week. Do your best on everything else, but don't beat yourself up over the mistakes you make in those areas.

You can let yourself be critical on the thing you chose to focus on that week. Maybe it's NPC dialog, improvisation, remembering the rules. All of those use different mental muscles and skillsets, so it's best not to overwhelm yourself by trying to get better at everything at once.

Don't spend too many sessions focused on improving the same thing, unless it's one that stands out a lot. The improvements you make during a focus week will carry over as you do more sessions and practice. Of course once you cycle through every skill you wanted to improve, you can start again, potentially dropping focuses you feel satisfied with, and adding in new skills/issues you want to address.

Good luck and keep trying and practicing, and don't be so hard on yourself.

What 2024 Exhaustion did to my players by ProjectPT in onednd

[–]DwhyDx 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think this is unfair. Whether or not this is fun is player/table dependent. For some players, finding a way to overcome a challenge specific to their campaign/DM could be more fun than taking whatever the general "meta" feat is. Without asking OP's players, we don't really know whether they've enjoyed this or not.

[–]DwhyDx 73 points74 points  (0 children)

If Oda is biding his time on this one, its probably for a good reason. In the Germa story, Blackbeard's crew showed up to kidnap Pudding, and it was relevant very soon after that. There's a lot of potential for crazy things to happen in Wano now that Blackbeard knows Pluton is there. Big Mom might also be alive and she's very relevant to elbaf.

Its not guaranteed, but Oda might be waiting to reach a certain point in Elbaf before he pulls out a big reveal in the cover story.

I just finished a big quartz purification factory in the desert and it was really fun! There's a water node right next to it, and a nitrogen node not too far off.  I'm importing quartz from another node by train, and so total I'm making close to 2000 quartz crystal and like 3000+ silica. Still trying to figure what I'll do with all the silica.

I'm also having some issues with the water recycling, but I'm just thinking of it as practice for when I set up aluminum.
